Currently, for vmalloc areas with flag VM_IOREMAP set, except of the specific alignment clamping in __get_vm_area_node(), they will be 1) Shown as ioremap in /proc/vmallocinfo; 2) Ignored by /proc/kcore reading via vread() So for the ioremap in __sq_remap() of sh, we should set VM_IOREMAP in flag to make it handled correctly as above. Every architecture that supports FLATMEM memory model defines its own version of pfn_valid() that essentially compares a pfn to max_mapnr. Use mips/powerpc version implemented as static inline as a generic implementation of pfn_valid() and drop its per-architecture definitions. sh/mm: support __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SWP_EXCLUSIVE
Let's support __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SWP_EXCLUSIVE by using bit 6 in the PTE, reducing the swap type in the !CONFIG_X2TLB case to 5 bits. Generic MM currently only uses 5 bits for the type (MAX_SWAPFILES_SHIFT), so the stolen bit is effectively unused. Interrestingly, the swap type in the !CONFIG_X2TLB case could currently overlap with the _PAGE_PRESENT bit, because there is a sneaky shift by 1 in __pte_to_swp_entry() and __swp_entry_to_pte(). Bit 0-7 in the architecture specific swap PTE would get shifted to bit 1-8 in the PTE. As generic MM uses 5 bits only, this didn't matter so far. While at it, mask the type in __swp_entry(). arch/idle: Change arch_cpu_idle() behavior: always exit with IRQs disabled
Current arch_cpu_idle() is called with IRQs disabled, but will return with IRQs enabled. However, the very first thing the generic code does after calling arch_cpu_idle() is raw_local_irq_disable(). This means that architectures that can idle with IRQs disabled end up doing a pointless 'enable-disable' dance. Therefore, push this IRQ disabling into the idle function, meaning that those architectures can avoid the pointless IRQ state flipping. Due to several bugs caused by timers being re-armed after they are shutdown and just before they are freed, a new state of timers was added called "shutdown". After a timer is set to this state, then it can no longer be re-armed. The following script was run to find all the trivial locations where del_timer() or del_timer_sync() is called in the same function that the object holding the timer is freed. It also ignores any locations where the timer->function is modified between the del_timer*() and the free(), as that is not considered a "trivial" case. Always running from a worker allows it to make use of the CPU RNG on platforms like S390x, whose instructions are too slow to do so from interrupts. It also has the effect of adding in new inputs more frequently with more regularity, amounting to a long term transcript of random values. Plus, it helps a bit with the upcoming vDSO implementation (which isn't yet ready for 6.2). - The jitter entropy algorithm now tries to execute on many different CPUs, round-robining, in hopes of hitting even more memory latencies and other unpredictable effects. It also will mix in a cycle counter when the entropy timer fires, in addition to being mixed in from the main loop, to account more explicitly for fluctuations in that timer firing. mm, slob: rename CONFIG_SLOB to CONFIG_SLOB_DEPRECATED
As explained in [1], we would like to remove SLOB if possible. - There are no known users that need its somewhat lower memory footprint so much that they cannot handle SLUB (after some modifications by the previous patches) instead. - It is an extra maintenance burden, and a number of features are incompatible with it. - It blocks the API improvement of allowing kfree() on objects allocated via kmem_cache_alloc(). As the first step, rename the CONFIG_SLOB option in the slab allocator configuration choice to CONFIG_SLOB_DEPRECATED. Add CONFIG_SLOB depending on CONFIG_SLOB_DEPRECATED as an internal option to avoid code churn. This will cause existing .config files and defconfigs with CONFIG_SLOB=y to silently switch to the default (and recommended replacement) SLUB, while still allowing SLOB to be configured by anyone that notices and needs it. But those should contact the slab maintainers and linux-mm@kvack.org as explained in the updated help. With no valid objections, the plan is to update the existing defconfigs to SLUB and remove SLOB in a few cycles. To make SLUB more suitable replacement for SLOB, a CONFIG_SLUB_TINY option was introduced to limit SLUB's memory overhead. There is a number of defconfigs specifying CONFIG_SLOB=y. As part of this patch, update them to select CONFIG_SLUB and CONFIG_SLUB_TINY. stackprotector: actually use get_random_canary()
The RNG always mixes in the Linux version extremely early in boot. It also always includes a cycle counter, not only during early boot, but each and every time it is invoked prior to being fully initialized. Together, this means that the use of additional xors inside of the various stackprotector.h files is superfluous and over-complicated. Instead, we can get exactly the same thing, but better, by just calling `get_random_canary()`. mm: remove kern_addr_valid() completely
Most architectures (except arm64/x86/sparc) simply return 1 for kern_addr_valid(), which is only used in read_kcore(), and it calls copy_from_kernel_nofault() which could check whether the address is a valid kernel address. So as there is no need for kern_addr_valid(), let's remove it. kbuild: remove head-y syntax
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the head
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO is now implicitly selected if one picks one of the
explicit options that could be DEBUG_INFO_DWARF_TOOLCHAIN_DEFAULT,
DEBUG_INFO_DWARF4, DEBUG_INFO_DWARF5.
This was actually not what I had in mind when I suggested making it a
'choice' statement, but it's too late to change again now, and the Kconfig
logic is more sensible in the new form.
Change any defconfig file that had CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO enabled but did not
pick DWARF4 or DWARF5 explicitly to now pick the toolchain default.

asm-generic: Conditionally enable do_softirq_own_stack() via Kconfig.
Remove the CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT symbol from the ifdef around do_softirq_own_stack() and move it to Kconfig instead. Enable softirq stacks based on SOFTIRQ_ON_OWN_STACK which depends on HAVE_SOFTIRQ_ON_OWN_STACK and its default value is set to !PREEMPT_RT. This ensures that softirq stacks are not used on PREEMPT_RT and avoids a 'select' statement on an option which has a 'depends' statement. perf/hw_breakpoint: Optimize constant number of breakpoint slots
Optimize internal hw_breakpoint state if the architecture's number of breakpoint slots is constant. This avoids several kmalloc() calls and potentially unnecessary failures if the allocations fail, as well as subtly improves code generation and cache locality. The protocol is that if an architecture defines hw_breakpoint_slots via the preprocessor, it must be constant and the same for all types. provide arch_test_bit_acquire for architectures that define test_bit
Some architectures define their own arch_test_bit and they also need
arch_test_bit_acquire, otherwise they won't compile. We also clean up
the code by using the generic test_bit if that is equivalent to the
arch-specific version.
