18fb84d986 mac80211: make rate control tx status API more extensible
Rename .tx_status_noskb to .tx_status_ext and pass a new on-stack
struct ieee80211_tx_status instead of struct ieee80211_tx_info.

This struct can be used to pass extra information, e.g. for dynamic tx
power control

57fbcce37b cfg80211: remove enum ieee80211_band
This enum is already perfectly aliased to enum nl80211_band, and
the only reason for it is that we get IEEE80211_NUM_BANDS out of
it. There's no really good reason to not declare the number of
bands in nl80211 though, so do that and remove the cfg80211 one.

06171e9c0b mac80211: minstrel_ht: improve sample rate skip logic
There were a few issues that were slowing down the process of finding
the optimal rate, especially on devices with multi-rate retry
limitations:

When max_tp_rate[0] was slower than max_tp_rate[1], the code did not
sample max_tp_rate[1], which would often allow it to switch places with
max_tp_rate[0] (e.g. if only the first sampling attempts were bad, but the
rate is otherwise good).

Also, sample attempts of rates between max_tp_rate[0] and [1] were being
ignored in this case, because the code only checked if the rate was
slower than [1].

Fix this by checking against the fastest / second fastest max_tp_rate
instead of assuming a specific order between the two.

In my tests this patch significantly reduces the time until minstrel_ht
finds the optimal rate right after assoc

7a36b930e6 mac80211: minstrel_ht: set default tx aggregation timeout to 0
The value 5000 was put here with the addition of the timeout field to
ieee80211_start_tx_ba_session. It was originally added in mac80211 to
save resources for drivers like iwlwifi, which only supports a limited
number of concurrent aggregation sessions.

Since iwlwifi does not use minstrel_ht and other drivers don't need
this, 0 is a better default - especially since there have been
recent reports of aggregation setup related issues reproduced with
ath9k. This should improve stability without causing any adverse
effects.

212c5a5e6b mac80211: minstrel: Change expected throughput unit back to Kbps
The change from cur_tp to the function
minstrel_get_tp_avg/minstrel_ht_get_tp_avg changed the unit used for the
current throughput. For example in minstrel_ht the correct
conversion between them would be:

    mrs->cur_tp / 10 == minstrel_ht_get_tp_avg(..).

This factor 10 must also be included in the calculation of
minstrel_get_expected_throughput and minstrel_ht_get_expected_throughput to
return values with the unit [Kbps] instead of [10Kbps]. Otherwise routing
algorithms like B.A.T.M.A.N. V will make incorrect decision based on these
values. Its kernel based implementation expects expected_throughput always
to have the unit [Kbps] and not sometimes [10Kbps] and sometimes [Kbps].

The same requirement has iw or olsrdv2's nl80211 based statistics module
which retrieve the same data via NL80211_STA_INFO_TX_BITRATE.

30686bf7f5 mac80211: convert HW flags to unsigned long bitmap
As we're running out of hardware capability flags pretty quickly,
convert them to use the regular test_bit() style unsigned long
bitmaps.

This introduces a number of helper functions/macros to set and to
test the bits, along with new debugfs code.

The occurrences of an explicit __clear_bit() are intentional, the
drivers were never supposed to change their supported bits on the
fly. We should investigate changing this to be a per-frame flag.

d66c258278 mac80211: minstrel_ht: fix rounding issue in MCS duration calculation
On very high MCS bitrates, the calculated duration of rates that are
next to each other can be very imprecise, due to the small packet size
used as reference (1200 bytes).
This is most visible in VHT80 nss=2 MCS8/9, for which minstrel shows the
same throughput when the probability is also the same. This leads to a
bad rate selection for such rates.

Fix this issue by introducing an average A-MPDU size factor into the
calculation.

280ba51d60 mac80211: minstrel_ht: fix a crash in rate sorting
The commit 5935839ad7
"mac80211: improve minstrel_ht rate sorting by throughput & probability"

introduced a crash on rate sorting that occurs when the rate added to
the sorting array is faster than all the previous rates. Due to an
off-by-one error, it reads the rate index from tp_list[-1], which
contains uninitialized stack garbage, and then uses the resulting index
for accessing the group rate stats, leading to a crash if the garbage
value is big enough.

9ffe904405 mac80211: minstrel_ht: do not always skip ht rates vht_only is true
When CONFIG_MAC80211_RC_MINSTREL_VHT is set, the module param

ATM, minstrel_ht skips ht rates when minstrel_vht_only is true, but it does
that even if vht is not supported, which makes the sta rates fallback to

d4d141cae8 mac80211: minstrel_ht: Increase the range of handled rate indexes
Since 5935839ad7 ("mac80211: improve minstrel_ht rate sorting by

and hence allow for a maximum of 256 mcs_group entries in
minstrel_mcs_groups.

ATM, minstrel_ht advertizes support up to 3HTSS@40MHz, consuming:
8(MCS_GROUP_RATES) * (3(SS)*2(GI)*2(BW)+1(CCK)), i.e. 104 entries.

Support for 3VHTSS@80MHz will require:
10(MCS_GROUP_RATES) * (3(SS)*2(GI)*2(BW)+1(CCK)) +
10(MCS_GROUP_RATES) * (3(SS)*2(GI)*3(BW)), i.e. 130 + 180 entries.

5935839ad7 mac80211: improve minstrel_ht rate sorting by throughput & probability
This patch improves the way minstrel_ht sorts rates according to throughput
and success probability. 3 FOR-loops across the entire rate and mcs group set
in function minstrel_ht_update_stats() which where used to determine the
fastest, second fastest and most robust rate are reduced to 2 FOR-loop.

The sorted list of rates according throughput is extended to the best four
rates as we need them in upcoming joint rate and power control. The sorting
is done via the new function minstrel_ht_sort_best_tp_rates(). The annotation
of those 4 best throughput rates in the debugfs file rc-stats is changes to:
"A,B,C,D", where A is the fastest rate and C the 4th fastest.

f12140c04c mac80211: minstrel_ht: do not sample unsupported rates
ATM minstrel_ht does not check whether a sampling rate is supported.
Unsupported rates attempts can trigger when there are holes in bitfields
of supported MCSes belonging to the same group (e.g many devices are
MCS32 capable without MCS33->39 capable, also we systematically have a
hole for CCK rates).
Drop any attempts to sample unsupported rates, as suggested by Felix.

This is not a problem in minstrel which fills a per STA sample table

This change moves the call to get_random_bytes from the nested loop it

way enough for the selection process.

351df09972 mac80211: minstrel_ht: fix rates selection
When initializing rates selections starting indexes upon stats update,
the minstrel_sta->max_* rates should be 'group * MCS_GROUP_RATES + i'
not 'i'. This affects settings where one of the peers does not support

e133fae263 mac80211: minstrel_ht: don't use control.flags in TX status path
Sujith reports that my commit af61a16518

3e8b1eb21c mac80211/minstrel_ht: improve rate selection stability
Under load, otherwise stable rates can easily fluctuate because of
collisions. In my tests on a clean channel, the success probability of
the max throughput rate often stays somewhere between 90% and 100% under
load. This can cause some unnecessary switching to lower rates.
This patch improves stability by treating success probability values
between 90% and 100% the same.

average throughput by a few mbit/s.

f744bf81f7 mac80211: add lowest rate into minstrel's random rate sampling table
While minstrel bootstraps and fills the success probabilities of each
rate the lowest rate has typically a very high success probability
(often 100% in our tests).
Its statistics are never updated but considered to setup the mrr chain.
In our tests we see that especially the 3rd mrr stage (which is that
rate providing highest success probability) is filled with the lowest rate
because its initial high sucess probability is never updated. By design
the 4th mrr stage is filled with the lowest rate so often 3rd and 4th
mrr stage are equal.

This patch follows minstrels general approach of assuming as little
as possible about rate dependencies. Consequently we include the
lowest rate into the random sampling table to get balanced up-to-date
statistics of all rates and therefore balanced decisions.

ed97a13c54 mac80211/minstrel_ht: improve accuracy of throughput metric at high data rates
At high data rates the average frame transmission durations are small
enough for rounding errors to matter, sometimes causing minstrel to use

To fix this, change the unit of the duration value to nanoseconds

e1a0c6b3a4 mac80211: stop toggling IEEE80211_HT_CAP_SUP_WIDTH_20_40
For VHT, many more bandwidth changes are possible. As a first
step, stop toggling the IEEE80211_HT_CAP_SUP_WIDTH_20_40 flag
in the HT capabilities and instead introduce a bandwidth field
indicating the currently usable bandwidth to transmit to the
station. Of course, make all drivers use it.

To achieve this, make ieee80211_ht_cap_ie_to_sta_ht_cap() get
the station as an argument, rather than the new capabilities,
so it can set up the new bandwidth field.

If the station is a VHT station and VHT bandwidth is in use,
also set the bandwidth accordingly.

Doing this allows us to get rid of the supports_40mhz flag as
the HT capabilities now reflect the true capability instead of
the current setting.

While at it, also fix ieee80211_ht_cap_ie_to_sta_ht_cap() to not
ignore HT cap overrides when MCS TX isn't supported (not that it
really happens...)

a5f69d94d8 mac80211: Get rid of search loop for rate group index
Finding the group index for a specific rate is done by looping through
all groups and returning if the correct one is found. This code is
called for each tx'ed frame and thus it makes sense to reduce its
runtime.

Do this by calculating the group index by this formula based on the SGI
and HT40 flags as well as the stream number:

idx = (HT40 * 2 * MINSTREL_MAX_STREAMS) +
      (SGI * MINSTREL_MAX_STREAMS) +
      (streams - 1)

Hence, the groups are ordered by th HT40 flag first, then by the SGI
flag and afterwards by the number of used streams.

8fddddff0a mac80211: fix contention time computation in minstrel, minstrel_ht
When transmitting a frame, the transmitter waits a random number of
slots between 0 and cw. Thus, the contention time is (cw / 2) * t_slot
which we can represent instead as (cw * t_slot) >> 1. Also fix a few
other accounting bugs around contention time, and add comments.

4dc217df68 mac80211: fix a crash in minstrel_ht in HT mode with no supported MCS rates
When a client connects in HT mode but does not provide any valid MCS
rates, the function that finds the next sample rate gets stuck in an
infinite loop.
Fix this by falling back to legacy rates if no usable MCS rates are found.

cf28d7934c mac80211: Shortcut minstrel_ht rate setup for non-MRR capable devices
Devices without multi rate retry support won't be able to use all rates
as specified by mintrel_ht. Hence, we can simply skip setting up further
rates as the devices will only use the first one.

Also add a special case for devices with only two possible tx rates. We
use sample_rate -> max_prob_rate for sampling and max_tp_rate ->
max_prob_rate by default.

bd2ce6e43f mac80211: Add timeout to BA session start API
Allow drivers or rate control algorithms to specify BlockAck session
timeout when initiating an ADDBA transaction. This is useful in cases
where maintaining persistent BA sessions does not incur any overhead.

The current timeout value of 5000 TUs is retained for all non ath9k/ath9k_htc
drivers.

15d46f38df mac80211: minstrel_ht A-MPDU fix
This patch fixes two problems with the minstrel_ht rate control
algorithms handling of A-MPDU frames:

1. The ampdu_len field of the tx status is not always initialized for
non-HT frames (and it would probably be unreasonable to require all
drivers to do so). This could cause rate control statistics to be
corrupted. We now trust the ampdu_len and ampdu_ack_len fields only when
the frame is marked with the IEEE80211_TX_STAT_AMPDU flag.

2. Successful transmission attempts where only recognized when the A-MPDU
subframe carrying the rate control status information was marked with the
IEEE80211_TX_STAT_ACK flag. If this information happed to be carried on a
frame that failed to be ACKed then the other subframes (which may have
succeeded) where not correctly registered. We now update rate control
statistics regardless of whether the subframe carrying the information was
ACKed or not.
