microblaze/PCI: Remove unused PCI bus scan if configured as a host
This routine is meant to be used early during boot, when the PCI bus numbers have not yet been assigned, and you need to issue PCI config cycles to an OF device. It could also be used to "fix" RTAS config cycles if you want to set pci_assign_all_buses to 1 and still use RTAS for PCI config cycles. [elf][non-regset] uninline elf_core_copy_task_fpregs() (and lose pt_regs argument)
Don't bother with pointless macros - we are not sharing it with aout coredumps anymore. Just convert the underlying functions to the same arguments (nobody uses regs, actually) and call them elf_core_copy_task_fpregs(). And unexport the entire bunch, while we are at it. mm: remove kern_addr_valid() completely
Most architectures (except arm64/x86/sparc) simply return 1 for kern_addr_valid(), which is only used in read_kcore(), and it calls copy_from_kernel_nofault() which could check whether the address is a valid kernel address. So as there is no need for kern_addr_valid(), let's remove it. kbuild: remove head-y syntax
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the head
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The fix was suggested by Nathan Chancellor [1]. microblaze: Add support for error injection
To inject the error using the tmr inject IP reset vectors need to be placed in lmb(bram) due to the limitation in HW when this code runs out of DDR. Below code adds the error inject code to the .init.ivt section to copy it in machine_early_init to lmb/Bram location. C_BASE_VECTORS which allow moving reset vectors out of 0 location is not currently supported by Microblaze architecture, that's why all the time reset vectors with injection code is all the time copied to address 0. As of now getting this functionality working CPU switches to real mode and simply jumps to bram, which causes triggering of fault which continues to call_xmb_manager_break break handler which will at the end calls the error count callback function and performs recovery. microblaze: Add custom break vector handler for mb manager
When the TMR Manager detects a fault Lockstep state it is signaled to the MicroBlaze processors by asserting a break signal, When Microblaze gets a break vector from tmr Microblaze it's needed to clear/block the break bit in the tmr manager before performing recovery. In order to perform recovery need to perform the following steps. 1) Store all internal MicroBlaze registers in RAM 2) Execute a suspend instruction which asserts the reset signal 3) Restore all registers from RAM and execute an RTBD instruction to return from the reset handler, to resume execution at the place where the break occurred. This API supports getting called from kernel space only. microblaze: Add xmb_manager_register function
Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) Microblaze solution provides soft error injection, detection, correction and recovery for Microblaze cores in the system. The Xilinx/AMD Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) solution in Vivado provides all the necessary building blocks to implement a redundant triplicated MicroBlaze subsystem. This processing subsystem is fault-tolerant and continues to operate nominally after encountering an error. Together with the capability to detect and recover from errors, the implementation ensures the reliability of the entire subsystem. When the break vector gets asserted because of error injection, the break signal must be blocked before exiting from the break handler, This commit adds support for xmb_manager_register api which updates the TMR manager address and control register and error count and reset callback function arguments, which will be used by the break handler to block the break and call the error count callback function and reset callback function. treewide: defconfig: address renamed CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO=y
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO is now implicitly selected if one picks one of the
explicit options that could be DEBUG_INFO_DWARF_TOOLCHAIN_DEFAULT,
DEBUG_INFO_DWARF4, DEBUG_INFO_DWARF5.
This was actually not what I had in mind when I suggested making it a
'choice' statement, but it's too late to change again now, and the Kconfig
logic is more sensible in the new form.
Change any defconfig file that had CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO enabled but did not
pick DWARF4 or DWARF5 explicitly to now pick the toolchain default.

There are three independent sets of changes: - Sai Prakash Ranjan adds tracing support to the asm-generic version of the MMIO accessors, which is intended to help understand problems with device drivers and has been part of Qualcomm's vendor kernels for many years. - A patch from Sebastian Siewior to rework the handling of IRQ stacks in softirqs across architectures, which is needed for enabling PREEMPT_RT. - The last patch to remove the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS option and some of the code behind that, after the last users of this old interface made it in through the netdev, scsi, media and staging trees. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmLqPPEACgkQmmx57+YA GNlUbQ/+NpIsiA0JUrCGtySt8KrLHdA2dH9lJOR5/iuxfphscPFfWtpcPvcXQWmt a8u7wyI8SHW1ku4U0Y5sO0dBSldDnoIqJ5t4X5d7YNU9yVtEtucqQhZf+GkrPlVD 1HkRu05B7y0k2BMn7BLhSvkpafs3f1lNGXjs8oFBdOF1/zwp/GjcrfCK7KFzqjwU dYrX0SOFlKFd4BZC75VfK+XcKg4LtwIOmJraRRl7alz2Q5Oop2hgjgZxXDPf//vn SPOhXJN/97i1FUpY2TkfHVH1NxbPfjCV4pUnjmLG0Y4NSy9UQ/ZcXHcywIdeuhfa 0LySOIsAqBeccpYYYdg2ubiMDZOXkBfANu/sB9o/EhoHfB4svrbPRDhBIQZMFXJr MJYu+IYce2rvydA/nydo4q++pxR8v1ES1ZIo8bDux+q1CI/zbpQV+f98kPVRA0M7 ajc+5GTIqNIsvHzzadq7eYxcj5Bi8Li2JA9sVkAQ+6iq1TVyeYayMc9eYwONlmqw MD+PFYc651pKtXZCfkLXPIKSwS0uPqBndAibuVhpZ0hxWaCBBdKvY9mrWcPxt0kA tMR8lrosbbrV2K48BFdWTOHvCs2FhHQxPGVPZ/iWuxTA0hHZ9tUlaEkSX+VM57IU KCYQLdWzT8J9vrgqSbgYKlb6pSPz6FIjTfut6NZMmshIbavHV/Q= =aTR0 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-6.0' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "There are three independent sets of changes: - Sai Prakash Ranjan adds tracing support to the asm-generic version of the MMIO accessors, which is intended to help understand problems with device drivers and has been part of Qualcomm's vendor kernels for many years - A patch from Sebastian Siewior to rework the handling of IRQ stacks in softirqs across architectures, which is needed for enabling PREEMPT_RT - The last patch to remove the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS option and some of the code behind that, after the last users of this old interface made it in through the netdev, scsi, media and staging trees" * tag 'asm-generic-6.0' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: uapi: asm-generic: fcntl: Fix typo 'the the' in comment arch/*/: remove CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS soc: qcom: geni: Disable MMIO tracing for GENI SE serial: qcom_geni_serial: Disable MMIO tracing for geni serial asm-generic/io: Add logging support for MMIO accessors KVM: arm64: Add a flag to disable MMIO trace for nVHE KVM lib: Add register read/write tracing support drm/meson: Fix overflow implicit truncation warnings irqchip/tegra: Fix overflow implicit truncation warnings coresight: etm4x: Use asm-generic IO memory barriers arm64: io: Use asm-generic high level MMIO accessors arch/*: Disable softirq stacks on PREEMPT_RT. |

arch/*/: remove CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS
All architecture-independent users of virt_to_bus() and bus_to_virt() have been fixed to use the dma mapping interfaces or have been removed now. This means the definitions on most architectures, and the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS symbol are now obsolete and can be removed. The only exceptions to this are a few network and scsi drivers for m68k Amiga and VME machines and ppc32 Macintosh. These drivers work correctly with the old interfaces and are probably not worth changing. On alpha and parisc, virt_to_bus() were still used in asm/floppy.h. alpha can use isa_virt_to_bus() like x86 does, and parisc can just open-code the virt_to_phys() here, as this is architecture specific code. I tried updating the bus-virt-phys-mapping.rst documentation, which started as an email from Linus to explain some details of the Linux-2.0 driver interfaces. The bits about virt_to_bus() were declared obsolete backin 2000, and the rest is not all that relevant any more, so in the end I just decided to remove the file completely. mm: avoid unnecessary page fault retires on shared memory types
I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. fork: Generalize PF_IO_WORKER handling
Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". These functions are fork_idle(), create_io_thread(), kernel_thread(), and user_mode_thread(). Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-4-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. pwm: Add support for Xilinx AXI Timer
This adds PWM support for Xilinx LogiCORE IP AXI soft timers commonly found on Xilinx FPGAs. At the moment clock control is very basic: we just enable the clock during probe and pin the frequency. In the future, someone could add support for disabling the clock when not in use. Some common code has been specially demarcated. While currently only used by the PWM driver, it is anticipated that it may be split off in the future to be used by the timer driver as well. This driver was written with reference to Xilinx DS764 for v1.03.a [1]. Align implementation with memcpy and memmove where also remaining bytes are

call to memset.
So this optimization is transforming a loop in a memset/memcpy into a call
to the function itself. This makes the memset implementation as recursive.
"-freestanding" option will disable the built-in library function but it
has been added in generic library implementation.
In default microblaze kernel defconfig we have CONFIG_OPT_LIB_FUNCTION
enabled so it will always pick optimized version of memset which is target
specific so we are replacing the while() loop with switch case to avoid
recursive memset call.
Issue with freestanding was already discussed in connection to commit

microblaze: Use simple memset implementation from lib/string.c
On microblaze systems which are not using OPT_LIB_FUNCTION only simple
memset is used. This function is already implemented in lib/string.c that's
why it should be used instead.
This change is done in respect of issue fixed by commit

ptrace: Cleanups for v5.18
This set of changes removes tracehook.h, moves modification of all of the ptrace fields inside of siglock to remove races, adds a missing permission check to ptrace.c The removal of tracehook.h is quite significant as it has been a major source of confusion in recent years. Much of that confusion was around task_work and TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL (which I have now decoupled making the semantics clearer). For people who don't know tracehook.h is a vestiage of an attempt to implement uprobes like functionality that was never fully merged, and was later superseeded by uprobes when uprobes was merged. For many years now we have been removing what tracehook functionaly a little bit at a time. To the point where now anything left in tracehook.h is some weird strange thing that is difficult to understand. Eric W. asm-generic updates for 5.18
There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. This was already gone from all major architectures, but now we can finally remove it everywhere, which loses some particularly tricky and error-prone code. There is a small merge conflict against a parisc cleanup, the solution is to use their new version. - The nds32 architecture ends its tenure in the Linux kernel. The hardware is still used and the code is in reasonable shape, but the mainline port is not actively maintained any more, as all remaining users are thought to run vendor kernels that would never be updated to a future release. There are some obvious conflicts against changes to the removed files. - A series from Masahiro Yamada cleans up some of the uapi header files to pass the compile-time checks. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmI69BsACgkQmmx57+YA GNn/zA//f4d5VTT0ThhRxRWTu9BdThGHoB8TUcY7iOhbsWu0X/913NItRC3UeWNl IdmisaXgVtirg1dcC2pWUmrcHdoWOCEGfK4+Zr2NhSWfuZDWvODHK9pGWk4WLnhe cQgUNBvIuuAMryGtrOBwHPO4TpfCyy2ioeVP36ZfcsWXdDxTrqfaq/56mk3sxIP6 sUTk1UEjut9NG4C9xIIvcSU50R3l6LryQE/H9kyTLtaSvfvTOvprcVYCq0GPmSzo DtQ1Wwa9zbJ+4EqoMiP5RrgQwWvOTg2iRByLU8ytwlX3e/SEF0uihvMv1FQbL8zG G8RhGUOKQSEhaBfc3lIkm8GpOVPh0uHzB6zhn7daVmAWtazRD2Nu59BMjipa+ims a8Z58iHH7jRAnKeEkVZqXKb1CEiUxaQx/IeVPzN4QlwMhDtwrI76LY7ZJ1zCqTGY ENG0yRLav1XselYBslOYXGtOEWcY5EZPWqLyWbp4P9vz2g0Fe0gZxoIOvPmNQc89 QnfXpCt7vm/DGkyO255myu08GOLeMkisVqUIzLDB9avlym5mri7T7vk9abBa2YyO CRpTL5gl1/qKPWuH1UI5mvhT+sbbBE2SUHSuy84btns39ZKKKynwCtdu+hSQkKLE h9pV30Gf1cLTD4JAE0RWlUgOmbBLVp34loTOexQj4MrLM1noOnw= =vtCN -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-5.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. uaccess: fix nios2 and microblaze get_user_8()
These two architectures implement 8-byte get_user() through a memcpy() into a four-byte variable, which won't fit. Use a temporary 64-bit variable instead here, and use a double cast the way that risc-v and openrisc do to avoid compile-time warnings. Fixes: |

uaccess: fix integer overflow on access_ok()
Three architectures check the end of a user access against the address limit without taking a possible overflow into account. Passing a negative length or another overflow in here returns success when it should not. Use the most common correct implementation here, which optimizes for a constant 'size' argument, and turns the common case into a single comparison. Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org Fixes: |

kbuild: unify cmd_copy and cmd_shipped
cmd_copy and cmd_shipped have similar functionality. The difference is that cmd_copy uses 'cp' while cmd_shipped 'cat'. Unify them into cmd_copy because this macro name is more intuitive. Going forward, cmd_copy will use 'cat' to avoid the permission issue. I also thought of 'cp --no-preserve=mode' but this option is not mentioned in the POSIX spec [1], so I am keeping the 'cat' command. Merge branch 'signal-for-v5.17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull signal/exit/ptrace updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found along the way. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost. kbuild: do not quote string values in include/config/auto.conf
The previous commit fixed up all shell scripts to not include include/config/auto.conf. Now that include/config/auto.conf is only included by Makefiles, we can change it into a more Make-friendly form. Previously, Kconfig output string values enclosed with double-quotes (both in the .config and include/config/auto.conf): CONFIG_X="foo bar" Unlike shell, Make handles double-quotes (and single-quotes as well) verbatim. We must rip them off when used. There are some patterns: [1] $(patsubst "%",%,$(CONFIG_X)) [2] $(CONFIG_X:"%"=%) [3] $(subst ",,$(CONFIG_X)) [4] $(shell echo $(CONFIG_X)) These are not only ugly, but also fragile. [1] and [2] do not work if the value contains spaces, like CONFIG_X=" foo bar " [3] does not work correctly if the value contains double-quotes like CONFIG_X="foo\"bar" [4] seems to work better, but has a cost of forking a process. Anyway, quoted strings were always PITA for our Makefiles. This commit changes Kconfig to stop quoting in include/config/auto.conf. exit: Add and use make_task_dead.
There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit rewind_stack_and_make_dead. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com> |

Tracing updates for 5.16:
- kprobes: Restructured stack unwinder to show properly on x86 when a stack dump happens from a kretprobe callback. - Fix to bootconfig parsing - Have tracefs allow owner and group permissions by default (only denying others). There's been pressure to allow non root to tracefs in a controlled fashion, and using groups is probably the safest. - Bootconfig memory managament updates. - Bootconfig clean up to have the tools directory be less dependent on changes in the kernel tree. - Allow perf to be traced by function tracer. - Rewrite of function graph tracer to be a callback from the function tracer instead of having its own trampoline (this change will happen on an arch by arch basis, and currently only x86_64 implements it). - Allow multiple direct trampolines (bpf hooks to functions) be batched together in one synchronization. - Allow histogram triggers to add variables that can perform calculations against the event's fields. - Use the linker to determine architecture callbacks from the ftrace trampoline to allow for proper parameter prototypes and prevent warnings from the compiler. - Extend histogram triggers to key off of variables. - Have trace recursion use bit magic to determine preempt context over if branches. - Have trace recursion disable preemption as all use cases do anyway. - Added testing for verification of tracing utilities. - Various small clean ups and fixes. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iIoEABYIADIWIQRRSw7ePDh/lE+zeZMp5XQQmuv6qgUCYYBdxhQccm9zdGVkdEBn b29kbWlzLm9yZwAKCRAp5XQQmuv6qp1sAQD2oYFwaG3sx872gj/myBcHIBSKdiki Hry5csd8zYDBpgD+Poylopt5JIbeDuoYw/BedgEXmscZ8Qr7VzjAXdnv/Q4= =Loz8 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'trace-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: - kprobes: Restructured stack unwinder to show properly on x86 when a stack dump happens from a kretprobe callback. - Fix to bootconfig parsing - Have tracefs allow owner and group permissions by default (only denying others). PCI: Rename pcibios_add_device() to pcibios_device_add()
The general convention for pcibios_* hooks is that they're named after the corresponding pci_* function they provide a hook for. The exception is pcibios_add_device() which provides a hook for pci_device_add(). Rename pcibios_add_device() to pcibios_device_add() so it matches pci_device_add(). Also, remove the export of the microblaze version. The only caller must be compiled as a built-in so there's no reason for the export. microblaze: simplify pte_alloc_one_kernel()
The microblaze's implementation of pte_alloc_one_kernel() used memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw() along with clear_page() to allocated a zeroed page during early setup. Replace calls of these functions with a call to memblock_alloc_try_nid() that already returns zeroed page and respects the same allocation limits as memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw(). While on it drop early_get_page() wrapper that was only used in pte_alloc_one_kernel(). mm/page_alloc: always initialize memory map for the holes
Patch series "mm: ensure consistency of memory map poisoning". Currently memory map allocation for FLATMEM case does not poison the struct pages regardless of CONFIG_PAGE_POISON setting. This happens because allocation of the memory map for FLATMEM and SPARSMEM use different memblock functions and those that are used for SPARSMEM case (namely memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw() and memblock_alloc_exact_nid_raw()) implicitly poison the allocated memory. Another side effect of this implicit poisoning is that early setup code that uses the same functions to allocate memory burns cycles for the memory poisoning even if it was not intended. These patches introduce memmap_alloc() wrapper that ensure that the memory map allocation is consistent for different memory models. This patch (of 4): Currently memory map for the holes is initialized only when SPARSEMEM memory model is used. Yet, even with FLATMEM there could be holes in the physical memory layout that have memory map entries. For instance, the memory reserved using e820 API on i386 or "reserved-memory" nodes in device tree would not appear in memblock.memory and hence the struct pages for such holes will be skipped during memory map initialization. These struct pages will be zeroed because the memory map for FLATMEM systems is allocated with memblock_alloc_node() that clears the allocated memory. While zeroed struct pages do not cause immediate problems, the correct behaviour is to initialize every page using __init_single_page(). Besides, enabling page poison for FLATMEM case will trigger PF_POISONED_CHECK() unless the memory map is properly initialized. Make sure init_unavailable_range() is called for both SPARSEMEM and FLATMEM so that struct pages representing memory holes would appear as PG_Reserved with any memory layout. asm-generic changes for 5.15
The main content for 5.15 is a series that cleans up the handling of strncpy_from_user() and strnlen_user(), removing a lot of slightly incorrect versions of these in favor of the lib/strn*.c helpers that implement these correctly and more efficiently. The only architectures that retain a private version now are mips, ia64, um and parisc. I had offered to convert those at all, but Thomas Bogendoerfer wanted to keep the mips version for the moment until he had a chance to do regression testing. asm-generic: reverse GENERIC_{STRNCPY_FROM,STRNLEN}_USER symbols
Most architectures do not need a custom implementation, and in most cases the generic implementation is preferred, so change the polariy on these Kconfig symbols to require architectures to select them when they provide their own version. The new name is CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_{STRNCPY_FROM,STRNLEN}_USER. The remaining architectures at the moment are: ia64, mips, parisc, um and xtensa. We should probably convert these as well, but I was not sure how far to take this series. asm-generic/unaligned: Unify asm/unaligned.h around struct helper
The get_unaligned()/put_unaligned() helpers are traditionally architecture specific, with the two main variants being the "access-ok.h" version that assumes unaligned pointer accesses always work on a particular architecture, and the "le-struct.h" version that casts the data to a byte aligned type before dereferencing, for architectures that cannot always do unaligned accesses in hardware. Based on the discussion linked below, it appears that the access-ok version is not realiable on any architecture, but the struct version probably has no downsides. This series changes the code to use the same implementation on all architectures, addressing the few exceptions separately. mm/thp: define default pmd_pgtable()
Currently most platforms define pmd_pgtable() as pmd_page() duplicating the same code all over. Instead just define a default value i.e pmd_page() for pmd_pgtable() and let platforms override when required via <asm/pgtable.h>. All the existing platform that override pmd_pgtable() have been moved into their respective <asm/pgtable.h> header in order to precede before the new generic definition. mm: generalize ZONE_[DMA|DMA32]
ZONE_[DMA|DMA32] configs have duplicate definitions on platforms that subscribe to them. Instead, just make them generic options which can be selected on applicable platforms. Also only x86/arm64 architectures could enable both ZONE_DMA and ZONE_DMA32 if EXPERT, add ARCH_HAS_ZONE_DMA_SET to make dma zone configurable and visible on the two architectures. Scheduler udpates for this cycle:
- Changes to core scheduling facilities: - Add "Core Scheduling" via CONFIG_SCHED_CORE=y, which enables coordinated scheduling across SMT siblings. This is a much requested feature for cloud computing platforms, to allow the flexible utilization of SMT siblings, without exposing untrusted domains to information leaks & side channels, plus to ensure more deterministic computing performance on SMT systems used by heterogenous workloads. There's new prctls to set core scheduling groups, which allows more flexible management of workloads that can share siblings. - Fix task->state access anti-patterns that may result in missed wakeups and rename it to ->__state in the process to catch new abuses. - Load-balancing changes: - Tweak newidle_balance for fair-sched, to improve 'memcache'-like workloads. - "Age" (decay) average idle time, to better track & improve workloads such as 'tbench'. - Fix & improve energy-aware (EAS) balancing logic & metrics. - Fix & improve the uclamp metrics. - Fix task migration (taskset) corner case on !CONFIG_CPUSET. - Fix RT and deadline utilization tracking across policy changes - Introduce a "burstable" CFS controller via cgroups, which allows bursty CPU-bound workloads to borrow a bit against their future quota to improve overall latencies & batching. Can be tweaked via /sys/fs/cgroup/cpu/<X>/cpu.cfs_burst_us. - Rework assymetric topology/capacity detection & handling. - Scheduler statistics & tooling: - Disable delayacct by default, but add a sysctl to enable it at runtime if tooling needs it. Use static keys and other optimizations to make it more palatable. - Use sched_clock() in delayacct, instead of ktime_get_ns(). - Misc cleanups and fixes. Locking changes for this cycle:
- Core locking & atomics: - Convert all architectures to ARCH_ATOMIC: move every architecture to ARCH_ATOMIC, then get rid of ARCH_ATOMIC and all the transitory facilities and #ifdefs. Much reduction in complexity from that series: 63 files changed, 756 insertions(+), 4094 deletions(-) - Self-test enhancements - Futexes: - Add the new FUTEX_LOCK_PI2 ABI, which is a variant that doesn't set FLAGS_CLOCKRT (.e. uses CLOCK_MONOTONIC). [ The temptation to repurpose FUTEX_LOCK_PI's implicit setting of FLAGS_CLOCKRT & invert the flag's meaning to avoid having to introduce a new variant was resisted successfully. ] - Enhance futex self-tests - Lockdep: - Fix dependency path printouts - Optimize trace saving - Broaden & fix wait-context checks - Misc cleanups and fixes.
