termios: get rid of non-UAPI asm/termios.h
All non-UAPI asm/termios.h consist of include of UAPI counterpart and, possibly, include of linux/uaccess.h The latter can't be simply removed, even though nothing in linux/termios.h doesn't depend upon it anymore - there are several places that rely upon that indirect chain of includes to pull linux/uaccess.h. So the include needs to be lifted out of there - we lift into tty_driver.h, serdev.h and places that pull asm/termios.h, but none of * linux/uaccess.h (obvious) * net/sock.h (pulls uaccess.h) * linux/{tty,tty_driver,serdev}.h (tty.h pulls tty_driver.h) That leaves us just with the include of UAPI asm/termios.h, which is what <asm/termios.h> will resolve to if we simply remove non-UAPI header. provide arch_test_bit_acquire for architectures that define test_bit
Some architectures define their own arch_test_bit and they also need
arch_test_bit_acquire, otherwise they won't compile. We also clean up
the code by using the generic test_bit if that is equivalent to the
arch-specific version.

bitops: unify non-atomic bitops prototypes across architectures
Currently, there is a mess with the prototypes of the non-atomic bitops across the different architectures: ret bool, int, unsigned long nr int, long, unsigned int, unsigned long addr volatile unsigned long *, volatile void * Thankfully, it doesn't provoke any bugs, but can sometimes make the compiler angry when it's not handy at all. Adjust all the prototypes to the following standard: ret bool retval can be only 0 or 1 nr unsigned long native; signed makes no sense addr volatile unsigned long * bitmaps are arrays of ulongs Next, some architectures don't define 'arch_' versions as they don't support instrumentation, others do. To make sure there is always the same set of callables present and to ease any potential future changes, make them all follow the rule: * architecture-specific files define only 'arch_' versions; * non-prefixed versions can be defined only in asm-generic files; and place the non-prefixed definitions into a new file in asm-generic to be included by non-instrumented architectures. Finally, add some static assertions in order to prevent people from making a mess in this room again. I also used the %__always_inline attribute consistently, so that they always get resolved to the actual operations. ia64, processor: fix -Wincompatible-pointer-types in ia64_get_irr()
test_bit(), as any other bitmap op, takes `unsigned long *` as a
second argument (pointer to the actual bitmap), as any bitmap
itself is an array of unsigned longs. However, the ia64_get_irr()
code passes a ref to `u64` as a second argument.
This works with the ia64 bitops implementation due to that they
have `void *` as the second argument and then cast it later on.
This works with the bitmap API itself due to that `unsigned long`
has the same size on ia64 as `u64` (`unsigned long long`), but
from the compiler PoV those two are different.
Define @irr as `unsigned long` to fix that. That implies no
functional changes. Has been hidden for 16 years!

arch/*/: remove CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS
All architecture-independent users of virt_to_bus() and bus_to_virt() have been fixed to use the dma mapping interfaces or have been removed now. This means the definitions on most architectures, and the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS symbol are now obsolete and can be removed. The only exceptions to this are a few network and scsi drivers for m68k Amiga and VME machines and ppc32 Macintosh. These drivers work correctly with the old interfaces and are probably not worth changing. On alpha and parisc, virt_to_bus() were still used in asm/floppy.h. alpha can use isa_virt_to_bus() like x86 does, and parisc can just open-code the virt_to_phys() here, as this is architecture specific code. I tried updating the bus-virt-phys-mapping.rst documentation, which started as an email from Linus to explain some details of the Linux-2.0 driver interfaces. The bits about virt_to_bus() were declared obsolete backin 2000, and the rest is not all that relevant any more, so in the end I just decided to remove the file completely. ia64: fix sparse warnings with cmpxchg() & xchg()
On IA64, new sparse's warnings where issued after fixing some __rcu annotations in kernel/bpf/. These new warnings are false positives and appear on IA64 because on this architecture, the macros for cmpxchg() and xchg() make casts that ignore sparse annotations. This patch contains the minimal patch to fix this issue: adding a missing cast and some missing '__force'. While looking at the ptrace problems with PREEMPT_RT and the problems
of Peter Zijlstra was encountering with ptrace in his freezer rewrite I identified some cleanups to ptrace_stop that make sense on their own and move make resolving the other problems much simpler. The biggest issue is the habbit of the ptrace code to change task->__state from the tracer to suppress TASK_WAKEKILL from waking up the tracee. No other code in the kernel does that and it is straight forward to update signal_wake_up and friends to make that unnecessary. Peter's task freezer sets frozen tasks to a new state TASK_FROZEN and then it stores them by calling "wake_up_state(t, TASK_FROZEN)" relying on the fact that all stopped states except the special stop states can tolerate spurious wake up and recover their state. The state of stopped and traced tasked is changed to be stored in task->jobctl as well as in task->__state. This makes it possible for the freezer to recover tasks in these special states, as well as serving as a general cleanup. With a little more work in that direction I believe TASK_STOPPED can learn to tolerate spurious wake ups and become an ordinary stop state. The TASK_TRACED state has to remain a special state as the registers for a process are only reliably available when the process is stopped in the scheduler. Fundamentally ptrace needs acess to the saved register values of a task. There are bunch of semi-random ptrace related cleanups that were found while looking at these issues. One cleanup that deserves to be called out is from commit |

mm: change huge_ptep_clear_flush() to return the original pte
Patch series "Fix CONT-PTE/PMD size hugetlb issue when unmapping or migrating", v4. presently, migrating a hugetlb page or unmapping a poisoned hugetlb page, we'll use ptep_clear_flush() and set_pte_at() to nuke the page table entry and remap it, and this is incorrect for CONT-PTE or CONT-PMD size hugetlb page, which will cause potential data consistent issue. This patch set will change to use hugetlb related APIs to fix this issue. Note: Mike pointed out the huge_ptep_get() will only return the one specific value, and it would not take into account the dirty or young bits of CONT-PTE/PMDs like the huge_ptep_get_and_clear() [1]. This inconsistent issue is not introduced by this patch set, and this issue will be addressed in another thread [2]. Meanwhile the uffd for hugetlb case [3] pointed out by Gerald also needs another patch to address. [1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/85bd80b4-b4fd-0d3f-a2e5-149559f2f387@oracle.com/ [2] https://lore.kernel.org/all/cover.1651998586.git.baolin.wang@linux.alibaba.com/ [3] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/20220503120343.6264e126@thinkpad/ This patch (of 3): It is incorrect to use ptep_clear_flush() to nuke a hugetlb page table when unmapping or migrating a hugetlb page, and will change to use huge_ptep_clear_flush() instead in the following patches. So this is a preparation patch, which changes the huge_ptep_clear_flush() to return the original pte to help to nuke a hugetlb page table. ia64: define get_cycles macro for arch-override
Itanium defines a get_cycles() function, but it does not do the usual `#define get_cycles get_cycles` dance, making it impossible for generic code to see if an arch-specific function was defined. While the get_cycles() ifdef is not currently used, the following timekeeping patch in this series will depend on the macro existing (or not existing) when defining random_get_entropy(). asm-generic updates for 5.18
There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. This was already gone from all major architectures, but now we can finally remove it everywhere, which loses some particularly tricky and error-prone code. There is a small merge conflict against a parisc cleanup, the solution is to use their new version. - The nds32 architecture ends its tenure in the Linux kernel. The hardware is still used and the code is in reasonable shape, but the mainline port is not actively maintained any more, as all remaining users are thought to run vendor kernels that would never be updated to a future release. There are some obvious conflicts against changes to the removed files. - A series from Masahiro Yamada cleans up some of the uapi header files to pass the compile-time checks. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmI69BsACgkQmmx57+YA GNn/zA//f4d5VTT0ThhRxRWTu9BdThGHoB8TUcY7iOhbsWu0X/913NItRC3UeWNl IdmisaXgVtirg1dcC2pWUmrcHdoWOCEGfK4+Zr2NhSWfuZDWvODHK9pGWk4WLnhe cQgUNBvIuuAMryGtrOBwHPO4TpfCyy2ioeVP36ZfcsWXdDxTrqfaq/56mk3sxIP6 sUTk1UEjut9NG4C9xIIvcSU50R3l6LryQE/H9kyTLtaSvfvTOvprcVYCq0GPmSzo DtQ1Wwa9zbJ+4EqoMiP5RrgQwWvOTg2iRByLU8ytwlX3e/SEF0uihvMv1FQbL8zG G8RhGUOKQSEhaBfc3lIkm8GpOVPh0uHzB6zhn7daVmAWtazRD2Nu59BMjipa+ims a8Z58iHH7jRAnKeEkVZqXKb1CEiUxaQx/IeVPzN4QlwMhDtwrI76LY7ZJ1zCqTGY ENG0yRLav1XselYBslOYXGtOEWcY5EZPWqLyWbp4P9vz2g0Fe0gZxoIOvPmNQc89 QnfXpCt7vm/DGkyO255myu08GOLeMkisVqUIzLDB9avlym5mri7T7vk9abBa2YyO CRpTL5gl1/qKPWuH1UI5mvhT+sbbBE2SUHSuy84btns39ZKKKynwCtdu+hSQkKLE h9pV30Gf1cLTD4JAE0RWlUgOmbBLVp34loTOexQj4MrLM1noOnw= =vtCN -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-5.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. Merge branch 'set_fs-4' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic into asm-generic
Christoph Hellwig and a few others spent a huge effort on removing set_fs() from most of the important architectures, but about half the other architectures were never completed even though most of them don't actually use set_fs() at all. I did a patch for microblaze at some point, which turned out to be fairly generic, and now ported it to most other architectures, using new generic implementations of access_ok() and __{get,put}_kernel_nocheck(). Three architectures (sparc64, ia64, and sh) needed some extra work, which I also completed. * 'set_fs-4' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: uaccess: remove CONFIG_SET_FS ia64: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support sh: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support sparc64: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support lib/test_lockup: fix kernel pointer check for separate address spaces uaccess: generalize access_ok() uaccess: fix type mismatch warnings from access_ok() arm64: simplify access_ok() m68k: fix access_ok for coldfire MIPS: use simpler access_ok() MIPS: Handle address errors for accesses above CPU max virtual user address uaccess: add generic __{get,put}_kernel_nofault nios2: drop access_ok() check from __put_user() x86: use more conventional access_ok() definition x86: remove __range_not_ok() sparc64: add __{get,put}_kernel_nofault() nds32: fix access_ok() checks in get/put_user uaccess: fix nios2 and microblaze get_user_8() uaccess: fix integer overflow on access_ok() |

uaccess: generalize access_ok()
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. lib/xor: make xor prototypes more friendly to compiler vectorization
Modern compilers are perfectly capable of extracting parallelism from the XOR routines, provided that the prototypes reflect the nature of the input accurately, in particular, the fact that the input vectors are expected not to overlap. This is not documented explicitly, but is implied by the interchangeability of the various C routines, some of which use temporary variables while others don't: this means that these routines only behave identically for non-overlapping inputs. So let's decorate these input vectors with the __restrict modifier, which informs the compiler that there is no overlap. While at it, make the input-only vectors pointer-to-const as well. include: move find.h from asm_generic to linux
find_bit API and bitmap API are closely related, but inclusion paths are different - include/asm-generic and include/linux, correspondingly. In the past it made a lot of troubles due to circular dependencies and/or undefined symbols. Fix this by moving find.h under include/linux. locking: Allow to include asm/spinlock_types.h from linux/spinlock_types_raw.h
The printk header file includes ratelimit_types.h for its __ratelimit() based usage. It is required for the static initializer used in printk_ratelimited(). It uses a raw_spinlock_t and includes the spinlock_types.h. PREEMPT_RT substitutes spinlock_t with a rtmutex based implementation and so its spinlock_t implmentation (provided by spinlock_rt.h) includes rtmutex.h and atomic.h which leads to recursive includes where defines are missing. By including only the raw_spinlock_t defines it avoids the atomic.h related includes at this stage. Merge branch 'per_signal_struct_coredumps-for-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull per signal_struct coredumps from Eric Biederman: "Current coredumps are mixed up with the exit code, the signal handling code, and the ptrace code making coredumps much more complicated than necessary and difficult to follow. This series of changes starts with ptrace_stop and cleans it up, making it easier to follow what is happening in ptrace_stop. Then cleans up the exec interactions with coredumps. Then cleans up the coredump interactions with exit. Finally the coredump interactions with the signal handling code is cleaned up. The first and last changes are bug fixes for minor bugs. I believe the fact that vfork followed by execve can kill the process the called vfork if exec fails is sufficient justification to change the userspace visible behavior. In previous discussions some of these changes were organized differently and individually appeared to make the code base worse. As currently written I believe they all stand on their own as cleanups and bug fixes. Which means that even if the worst should happen and the last change needs to be reverted for some unimaginable reason, the code base will still be improved. If the worst does not happen there are a more cleanups that can be made. Signals that generate coredumps can easily become eligible for short circuit delivery in complete_signal. The entire rendezvous for generating a coredump can move into get_signal. The function force_sig_info_to_task be written in a way that does not modify the signal handling state of the target task (because coredumps are eligible for short circuit delivery). Many of these future cleanups can be done another way but nothing so cleanly as if coredumps become per signal_struct" * 'per_signal_struct_coredumps-for-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: coredump: Limit coredumps to a single thread group coredump: Don't perform any cleanups before dumping core exit: Factor coredump_exit_mm out of exit_mm exec: Check for a pending fatal signal instead of core_state ptrace: Remove the unnecessary arguments from arch_ptrace_stop signal: Remove the bogus sigkill_pending in ptrace_stop |
