Merge branch 'signal-cleanup' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rw/misc
Pull arch signal handling cleanup from Richard Weinberger: "This patch series moves all remaining archs to the get_signal(), signal_setup_done() and sigsp() functions. Currently these archs use open coded variants of the said functions. Further, unused parameters get removed from get_signal_to_deliver(), tracehook_signal_handler() and signal_delivered(). At the end of the day we save around 500 lines of code." * 'signal-cleanup' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rw/misc: (43 commits) powerpc: Use sigsp() openrisc: Use sigsp() mn10300: Use sigsp() mips: Use sigsp() microblaze: Use sigsp() metag: Use sigsp() m68k: Use sigsp() m32r: Use sigsp() hexagon: Use sigsp() frv: Use sigsp() cris: Use sigsp() c6x: Use sigsp() blackfin: Use sigsp() avr32: Use sigsp() arm64: Use sigsp() arc: Use sigsp() sas_ss_flags: Remove nested ternary if Rip out get_signal_to_deliver() Clean up signal_delivered() tracehook_signal_handler: Remove sig, info, ka and regs ... |

rtc: ia64: allow other architectures to use EFI RTC
Currently, the rtc-efi driver is restricted to ia64 only. Newer architectures with EFI support may want to also use that driver. This patch moves the platform device setup from ia64 into drivers/rtc and allow any architecture with CONFIG_EFI=y to use the rtc-efi driver. Merge branch 'timers-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull timer and time updates from Thomas Gleixner: "A rather large update of timers, timekeeping & co - Core timekeeping code is year-2038 safe now for 32bit machines. Now we just need to fix all in kernel users and the gazillion of user space interfaces which rely on timespec/timeval :) - Better cache layout for the timekeeping internal data structures. - Proper nanosecond based interfaces for in kernel users. - Tree wide cleanup of code which wants nanoseconds but does hoops and loops to convert back and forth from timespecs. Some of it definitely belongs into the ugly code museum. - Consolidation of the timekeeping interface zoo. - A fast NMI safe accessor to clock monotonic for tracing. This is a long standing request to support correlated user/kernel space traces. With proper NTP frequency correction it's also suitable for correlation of traces accross separate machines. - Checkpoint/restart support for timerfd. - A few NOHZ[_FULL] improvements in the [hr]timer code. - Code move from kernel to kernel/time of all time* related code. - New clocksource/event drivers from the ARM universe. I'm really impressed that despite an architected timer in the newer chips SoC manufacturers insist on inventing new and differently broken SoC specific timers. [ Ed. "Impressed"? I don't think that word means what you think it means ] - Another round of code move from arch to drivers. Looks like most of the legacy mess in ARM regarding timers is sorted out except for a few obnoxious strongholds. - The usual updates and fixlets all over the place" * 'timers-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (114 commits) timekeeping: Fixup typo in update_vsyscall_old definition clocksource: document some basic timekeeping concepts timekeeping: Use cached ntp_tick_length when accumulating error timekeeping: Rework frequency adjustments to work better w/ nohz timekeeping: Minor fixup for timespec64->timespec assignment ftrace: Provide trace clocks monotonic timekeeping: Provide fast and NMI safe access to CLOCK_MONOTONIC seqcount: Add raw_write_seqcount_latch() seqcount: Provide raw_read_seqcount() timekeeping: Use tk_read_base as argument for timekeeping_get_ns() timekeeping: Create struct tk_read_base and use it in struct timekeeper timekeeping: Restructure the timekeeper some more clocksource: Get rid of cycle_last clocksource: Move cycle_last validation to core code clocksource: Make delta calculation a function wireless: ath9k: Get rid of timespec conversions drm: vmwgfx: Use nsec based interfaces drm: i915: Use nsec based interfaces timekeeping: Provide ktime_get_raw() hangcheck-timer: Use ktime_get_ns() ... |

efi/reboot: Add generic wrapper around EfiResetSystem()
Implement efi_reboot(), which is really just a wrapper around the EfiResetSystem() EFI runtime service, but it does at least allow us to funnel all callers through a single location. It also simplifies the callsites since users no longer need to check to see whether EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICES are enabled. [IA64] Change default PSR.ac from '1' to '0' (Fix erratum #237)
April 2014 Itanium processor specification update:
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/itanium/itanium-specification-update.html
describes this erratum:
=========================================================================
237. Under a complex set of conditions, store to load forwarding for a
sub 8-byte load may complete incorrectly
Problem: A load instruction may complete incorrectly when a code sequence
using 4-byte or smaller load and store operations to the same address
is executed in combination with specific timing of all the following
concurrent conditions: store to load forwarding, alignment checking
enabled, a mis-predicted branch, and complex cache utilization activity.
Implication: The affected sub 8-byte instruction may complete
incorrectly resulting in unpredictable system behavior. There is an
extremely low probability of exposure due to the significant number of
complex microarchitectural concurrent conditions required to encounter
the erratum.
Workaround: Set PSR.ac = 0 to completely avoid the erratum. Disabling
Hyper-Threading will significantly reduce exposure to the conditions
that contribute to encountering the erratum.
Status: See the Summary Table of Changes for the affected steppings.
=========================================================================
[Table of changes essentially lists all models from McKinley to Tukwila]
The PSR.ac bit controls whether the processor will always generate
an unaligned reference trap (0x5a00) for a misaligned data access
(when PSR.ac=1) or if it will let the access succeed when running
on a cpu that implements logic to handle some unaligned accesses.

CPU hotplug notifiers registration fixes for 3.15-rc1
The purpose of this single series of commits from Srivatsa S Bhat (with a small piece from Gautham R Shenoy) touching multiple subsystems that use CPU hotplug notifiers is to provide a way to register them that will not lead to deadlocks with CPU online/offline operations as described in the changelog of commit |

Most of the changes were largely clean ups, and some documentation.
But there were a few features that were added. Uprobes now work with event triggers and multi buffers. Uprobes have support under ftrace and perf. The big feature is that the function tracer can now be used within the multi buffer instances. That is, you can now trace some functions in one buffer, others in another buffer, all functions in a third buffer and so on. They are basically agnostic from each other. This only works for the function tracer and not for the function graph trace, although you can have the function graph tracer running in the top level buffer (or any tracer for that matter) and have different function tracing going on in the sub buffers. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iQEcBAABAgAGBQJTOthtAAoJEKQekfcNnQGu5c8H/Ana/U+0tmksp1dbHkRHsKSH +Fsv4Jeu8gf1NaFKHEhkUTcFtnzE6qAPV2VCrcJwXbhAhhwZm+LjrnWdoy3215S3 cQW4LftLEonh2cM36Cos74TulMEYN6XmL6dQZV+CILKQkDrWU4qJjQ64okXEkqrd 9iG3p/mSXyvJcmnyg61ALnMOhZDLsXY3djBhWBPhiTPGS6BRb9zh4Pmw6Zv0n2rJ U93Gt/3AQrv1ybu73dUxqP0abp60oXOiWoF/R2jcbKqIM+K9RPJX79unCV3jq3u9 f+6jMlB9PgAMqQj6ihJdwxKDDuzwyrVdEPnsgvl4jarCBCtVVwhKedBaKN/KS8k= =HdXY -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'trace-3.15' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: "Most of the changes were largely clean ups, and some documentation. ACPI and power management updates for 3.15-rc1
- Device PM QoS support for latency tolerance constraints on systems with hardware interfaces allowing such constraints to be specified. That is necessary to prevent hardware-driven power management from becoming overly aggressive on some systems and to prevent power management features leading to excessive latencies from being used in some cases. - Consolidation of the handling of ACPI hotplug notifications for device objects. This causes all device hotplug notifications to go through the root notify handler (that was executed for all of them anyway before) that propagates them to individual subsystems, if necessary, by executing callbacks provided by those subsystems (those callbacks are associated with struct acpi_device objects during device enumeration). As a result, the code in question becomes both smaller in size and more straightforward and all of those changes should not affect users. - ACPICA update, including fixes related to the handling of _PRT in cases when it is broken and the addition of "Windows 2013" to the list of supported "features" for _OSI (which is necessary to support systems that work incorrectly or don't even boot without it). Changes from Bob Moore and Lv Zheng. - Consolidation of ACPI _OST handling from Jiang Liu. - ACPI battery and AC fixes allowing unusual system configurations to be handled by that code from Alexander Mezin. - New device IDs for the ACPI LPSS driver from Chiau Ee Chew. - ACPI fan and thermal optimizations related to system suspend and resume from Aaron Lu. - Cleanups related to ACPI video from Jean Delvare. - Assorted ACPI fixes and cleanups from Al Stone, Hanjun Guo, Lan Tianyu, Paul Bolle, Tomasz Nowicki. - Intel RAPL (Running Average Power Limits) driver cleanups from Jacob Pan. - intel_pstate fixes and cleanups from Dirk Brandewie. - cpufreq fixes related to system suspend/resume handling from Viresh Kumar. - cpufreq core fixes and cleanups from Viresh Kumar, Stratos Karafotis, Saravana Kannan, Rashika Kheria, Joe Perches. - cpufreq drivers updates from Viresh Kumar, Zhuoyu Zhang, Rob Herring. - cpuidle fixes related to the menu governor from Tuukka Tikkanen. - cpuidle fix related to coupled CPUs handling from Paul Burton. - Asynchronous execution of all device suspend and resume callbacks, except for ->prepare and ->complete, during system suspend and resume from Chuansheng Liu. - Delayed resuming of runtime-suspended devices during system suspend for the PCI bus type and ACPI PM domain. - New set of PM helper routines to allow device runtime PM callbacks to be used during system suspend and resume more easily from Ulf Hansson. - Assorted fixes and cleanups in the PM core from Geert Uytterhoeven, Prabhakar Lad, Philipp Zabel, Rashika Kheria, Sebastian Capella. - devfreq fix from Saravana Kannan. / -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.22 (GNU/Linux) iQIcBAABCAAGBQJTLgB1AAoJEILEb/54YlRxfs4P/35fIu9h8ClNWUPXqi3nlGIt yMyumKvF1VdsOKLbjTtFq6B3UOlhqDijYTCQd7Xt7X8ONTk/ND9ec2t/5xGkSdUI q46fa0qZXeqUn0Kt2t+kl6tgVQOkDj94aNlEh+7Ya3Uu6WYDDfmZtOBOFAMk6D8l ND4rHJpX+eUsRLBrcxaUxxdD8AW5guGcPKyeyzsXv1bY1BZnpLFrZ3PhuI5dn2CL L/zmk3A+wG6+ZlQxnwDdrKa3E6uhRSIDeF0vI4Byspa1wi5zXknJG2J7MoQ9JEE9 VQpBXlqach5wgXqJ8PAqAeaB6Ie26/F7PYG8r446zKw/5UUtdNUx+0dkjQ7Mz8Tu ajuVxfwrrPhZeQqmVBxlH5Gg7Ez2KBKEfDxTdRnzI7FoA7PE5XDcg3kO64bhj8LJ yugnV/ToU9wMztZnPC7CoGPwUgxMJvr9LwmxS4aeKcVUBES05eg0vS3lwdZMgqkV iO0QkWTmhZ952qZCqZxbh0JqaaX8Wgx2kpX2tf1G2GJqLMZco289bLh6njNT+8CH EzdQKYYyn6G6+Qg2M0f/6So3qU17x9XtE4ZBWQdGDpqYOGZhjZAOs/VnB1Ysw/K3 cDBzswlJd0CyyUps9B+qbf49OpbWVwl5kKeuHUuPxugEVryhpSp9AuG+tNil74Sj JuGTGR4fyFjDBX5cvAPm =ywR6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.15-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki: "The majority of this material spent some time in linux-next, some of it even several weeks. There are a few relatively fresh commits in it, but they are mostly fixes and simple cleanups. ACPI took the lead this time, both in terms of the number of commits and the number of modified lines of code, cpufreq follows and there are a few changes in the PM core and in cpuidle too. A new feature that already got some LWN.net's attention is the device PM QoS extension allowing latency tolerance requirements to be propagated from leaf devices to their ancestors with hardware interfaces for specifying latency tolerance. That should help systems with hardware-driven power management to avoid going too far with it in cases when there are latency tolerance constraints. There also are some significant changes in the ACPI core related to the way in which hotplug notifications are handled. They affect PCI hotplug (ACPIPHP) and the ACPI dock station code too. The bottom line is that all those notification now go through the root notify handler and are propagated to the interested subsystems by means of callbacks instead of having to install a notify handler for each device object that we can potentially get hotplug notifications for. In addition to that ACPICA will now advertise "Windows 2013" compatibility for _OSI, because some systems out there don't work correctly if that is not done (some of them don't even boot). On the system suspend side of things, all of the device suspend and resume callbacks, except for ->prepare() and ->complete(), are now going to be executed asynchronously as that turns out to speed up system suspend and resume on some platforms quite significantly and we have a few more optimizations in that area. Apart from that, there are some new device IDs and fixes and cleanups all over. In particular, the system suspend and resume handling by cpufreq should be improved and the cpuidle menu governor should be a bit more robust now. Specifics: - Device PM QoS support for latency tolerance constraints on systems with hardware interfaces allowing such constraints to be specified. That is necessary to prevent hardware-driven power management from becoming overly aggressive on some systems and to prevent power management features leading to excessive latencies from being used in some cases. - Consolidation of the handling of ACPI hotplug notifications for device objects. Pull irq code updates from Thomas Gleixner: "The irq department proudly presents: - Another tree wide sweep of irq infrastructure abuse. Clear winner of the trainwreck engineering contest was: #include "../../../kernel/irq/settings.h" - Tree wide update of irq_set_affinity() callbacks which miss a cpu online check when picking a single cpu out of the affinity mask. - Tree wide consolidation of interrupt statistics. - Updates to the threaded interrupt infrastructure to allow explicit wakeup of the interrupt thread and a variant of synchronize_irq() which synchronizes only the hard interrupt handler. Both are needed to replace the homebrewn thread handling in the mmc/sdhci code. - New irq chip callbacks to allow proper support for GPIO based irqs. The GPIO based interrupts need to request/release GPIO resources from request/free_irq. - A few new ARM interrupt chips. No revolutionary new hardware, just differently wreckaged variations of the scheme. - Small improvments, cleanups and updates all over the place" I was hoping that that trainwreck engineering contest was a April Fools' joke. ia64, err-inject: Fix CPU hotplug callback registration
Subsystems that want to register CPU hotplug callbacks, as well as perform initialization for the CPUs that are already online, often do it as shown below: get_online_cpus(); for_each_online_cpu(cpu) init_cpu(cpu); register_cpu_notifier(&foobar_cpu_notifier); put_online_cpus(); This is wrong, since it is prone to ABBA deadlocks involving the cpu_add_remove_lock and the cpu_hotplug.lock (when running concurrently with CPU hotplug operations). Instead, the correct and race-free way of performing the callback registration is: cpu_notifier_register_begin(); for_each_online_cpu(cpu) init_cpu(cpu); /* Note the use of the double underscored version of the API */ __register_cpu_notifier(&foobar_cpu_notifier); cpu_notifier_register_done(); Fix the palinfo code in ia64 by using this latter form of callback registration. ia64: Validate online cpus in irq_set_affinity() callbacks
The [user space] interface does not filter out offline cpus. It merily guarantees that the mask contains at least one online cpu. So the selector in the irq chip implementation needs to make sure to pick only an online cpu because otherwise: Offline Core 1 Set affinity to 0xe (is valid due to online mask 0xd) cpumask_first will pick core 1, which is offline Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Cc: Fenghua Yu <fenghua.yu@intel.com> Cc: ia64 <linux-ia64@vger.kernel.org> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20140304203100.650414633@linutronix.de Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> |

mm: fix GFP_THISNODE callers and clarify
GFP_THISNODE is for callers that implement their own clever fallback to remote nodes. It restricts the allocation to the specified node and does not invoke reclaim, assuming that the caller will take care of it when the fallback fails, e.g. through a subsequent allocation request without GFP_THISNODE set. However, many current GFP_THISNODE users only want the node exclusive aspect of the flag, without actually implementing their own fallback or triggering reclaim if necessary. This results in things like page migration failing prematurely even when there is easily reclaimable memory available, unless kswapd happens to be running already or a concurrent allocation attempt triggers the necessary reclaim. Convert all callsites that don't implement their own fallback strategy to __GFP_THISNODE. This restricts the allocation a single node too, but at the same time allows the allocator to enter the slowpath, wake kswapd, and invoke direct reclaim if necessary, to make the allocation happen when memory is full. ftrace: Do not pass data to ftrace_dyn_arch_init
As the data parameter is not really used by any ftrace_dyn_arch_init, remove that from ftrace_dyn_arch_init. This also removes the addr local variable from ftrace_init which is now unused. Note the documentation was imprecise as it did not suggest to set (*data) to 0. ftrace: Pass retval through return in ftrace_dyn_arch_init()
No architecture uses the "data" parameter in ftrace_dyn_arch_init() in any way, it just sets the value to 0. And this is used as a return value in the caller -- ftrace_init, which just checks the retval against zero. Note there is also "return 0" in every ftrace_dyn_arch_init. So it is enough to check the retval and remove all the indirect sets of data on all archs. ia64/efi: Implement efi_enabled()
There's no good reason to keep efi_enabled() under CONFIG_X86 anymore, since nothing about the implementation is specific to x86. Set EFI feature flags in the ia64 boot path instead of claiming to support all features. The old behaviour was actually buggy since efi.memmap never points to a valid memory map, so we shouldn't be claiming to support EFI_MEMMAP. Fortunately, this bug was never triggered because EFI_MEMMAP isn't used outside of arch/x86 currently, but that may not always be the case. ACPI and power management updates for 3.14-rc1
- ACPI core changes to make it create a struct acpi_device object for every device represented in the ACPI tables during all namespace scans regardless of the current status of that device. In accordance with this, ACPI hotplug operations will not delete those objects, unless the underlying ACPI tables go away. - On top of the above, new sysfs attribute for ACPI device objects allowing user space to check device status by triggering the execution of _STA for its ACPI object. From Srinivas Pandruvada. - ACPI core hotplug changes reducing code duplication, integrating the PCI root hotplug with the core and reworking container hotplug. - ACPI core simplifications making it use ACPI_COMPANION() in the code "glueing" ACPI device objects to "physical" devices. - ACPICA update to upstream version 20131218. This adds support for the DBG2 and PCCT tables to ACPICA, fixes some bugs and improves debug facilities. From Bob Moore, Lv Zheng and Betty Dall. - Init code change to carry out the early ACPI initialization earlier. They are fixes and cleanups mostly, as usual, with a couple of new features in the mix. The most visible change is probably that we will create struct acpi_device objects (visible in sysfs) for all devices represented in the ACPI tables regardless of their status and there will be a new sysfs attribute under those objects allowing user space to check that status via _STA. Consequently, ACPI device eject or generally hot-removal will not delete those objects, unless the table containing the corresponding namespace nodes is unloaded, which is extremely rare. Also ACPI container hotplug will be handled quite a bit differently and cpufreq will support CPU boost ("turbo") generically and not only in the acpi-cpufreq driver. Specifics: - ACPI core changes to make it create a struct acpi_device object for every device represented in the ACPI tables during all namespace scans regardless of the current status of that device. In accordance with this, ACPI hotplug operations will not delete those objects, unless the underlying ACPI tables go away. - On top of the above, new sysfs attribute for ACPI device objects allowing user space to check device status by triggering the execution of _STA for its ACPI object. ACPICA: Cleanup the option of forcing the use of the RSDT.
This change adds a runtime option that will force ACPICA to use the RSDT instead of the XSDT. Although the ACPI spec requires that an XSDT be used instead of the RSDT, the XSDT has been found to be corrupt or ill-formed on some machines. This option is already in the Linux kernel. When it is back ported to ACPICA, code is re-written to follow ACPICA coding style. This patch is the generation of the integration.
