The current "mask" policy option matches files opened as MAY_READ,
MAY_WRITE, MAY_APPEND or MAY_EXEC. This patch extends the "mask"
option to match files opened containing one of these modes. For
example, "mask=^MAY_READ" would match files opened read-write.

The new "euid" policy condition measures files with the specified
effective uid (euid). In addition, for CAP_SETUID files it measures
files with the specified uid or suid.

Current description for proximity measurement is ambiguous. While
the first part says that proximity is measured by observing
reflectivity, the second part incorrectly infers that reported values
should behave like a distance.
This is because of AS3935 lightning sensor which uses the proximity
API, while not being a true proximity sensor.
Note this is marked for stable as it accompanies a fix in ABI usage
to the sx9500 driver which would otherwise appear to be correct.

Given Linus announced a 4.8rc coming up, hopefully time for one more
lot of IIO patches this cycle. Some of these are actually
improvements / fixes for patches earlier in the cycle.
New device support
* st_accel driver - support devices with 8 bit channels.
Cleanup
* A general cleanup of the iio tools under /tools/ from Hartmut.
I'm more than a little embarassed by how bad some of these were! Are well,
much more refined and less bug prone now.
These cover lots of stuff like unhandled error returns, memory leaks as
well as general refactoring to tidy the code up.
* iio_simple_dummy - fix memory leaks in the init functions, drop some
pointless error returns from functions that never generate errors and
make the module parameter explicitly unsigned.
* More buffer handling reworks from Lars-Peter, this time targetting hardware
buffers (a little used corner that looks likely to get more use in the near
future). Specifically:
- Always compute the masklength as inkernel buffer users may need it.
- Add a means of labeling which buffer modes a given buffer implementation
supports.
- In the case of hardware buffers, require strict scan matching rather than
matching to a superset. Currently the demux is bypassed by these drivers
(this may well not change for efficiency reasons) so allowing a superset
of channels to be selected would otherwise lead to more data than requested
confusing userspace.

This resolves a merge issue in musb_core.c and we want the fixes that

Support configurable conversion mode through sysfs. So far, the
mode used was low-power, which is enabled by default now. Beside
that, the modes normal and high-speed are selectable as well.
Use the new device tree property which specifies the maximum ADC
conversion clock frequencies. Depending on the mode used, the
available resulting conversion frequency are calculated
dynamically.

Export the "AFU Error Buffer" via sysfs attribute (afu_err_buf). AFU
error buffer is used by the AFU to report application specific
errors. The contents of this buffer are AFU specific and are intended to
be interpreted by the application interacting with the afu.

This patch implements tape statistics in the st module via
sysfs. Current no statistics are available for tape I/O and there
is no easy way to reuse the block layer statistics for tape
as tape is a character device and does not have perform I/O in
sector sized chunks (the size of the data written to tape
can change). For tapes we also need extra stats related to
things like tape movement (via other I/O).
There have been multiple end users requesting statistics
including AT&T (and some HP customers who have not given
permission to be named). It is impossible for them
to investigate any issues related to tape performance
in a non-invasive way.

This patch provides support for the DS28EA00 digital thermometer.
The DS28EA00 provides an additional two pins for implementing a sequence
detection algorithm. This feature allows you to determine the physical
location of the chip in the 1-wire bus without needing pre-existing
knowledge of the bus ordering. Support is provided through the sysfs
w1_seq file. The file will contain a single line with an integer value
representing the device index in the bus starting at 0.

in-phase and a quadrature component.
The ABI documentation describes the I and Q modifiers for current and

This patch adds a rule in the default measurement policy to skip inodes
in the cgroupfs filesystem. Measurements for this filesystem can be
avoided, as all the digests collected have the same value of the digest of
an empty file.
Furthermore, this patch updates the documentation of IMA policies in
Documentation/ABI/testing/ima_policy to make it consistent with
the policies set in security/integrity/ima/ima_policy.c.

In our department we are using some older Janz ICAN3-modules in our dekstop
pcs. There we have slightly different carrier boards than the janz-cmodio
supported in the kernel sources, called CAN-PCI2 with two submodules. But the
pci configuration regions are identical. So extending the supported pci devices
to the corresponding device ids is sufficient to get the drivers working.
* The old ICAN3-modules with firmware 1.28 need more then 250ms for the restart
after reset. I've increased the timeout to 500ms.
* The janz_ican3 module uses the raw can services of the Janz-firmware, this
means firmware must be ICANOS/2. Our ICAN3-modules are equipped with
CAL/CANopen-firmware, so I must use the appropriate commands for the layer
management services.
Te driver detects the firmware after module reset and selects the commands
matching the firmware. This affects the bus on/off-command
(ican3_set_bus_state) and the configuration of the bittiming
(ican3_set_bittiming). For better diagnostics the detected firmware string is
presented as sysfs attribute (fwinfo).

allows to forward LLDP frames.
This may be needed for bridge setups used for network troubleshooting or
any other scenario where forwarding of LLDP frames is desired (e.g. bridge
connecting a virtual machine to real switch transmitting LLDP frames that
virtual machine needs to receive).
Tested on a simple bridge setup with two interfaces and host transmitting
LLDP frames on one side of this bridge (used lldpd). Setting group_fwd_mask
as described above lets LLDP frames traverse bridge.

Add sysfs files for the EFI System Resource Table (ESRT) under
/sys/firmware/efi/esrt and for each EFI System Resource Entry under
entries/ as a subdir.
The EFI System Resource Table (ESRT) provides a read-only catalog of
system components for which the system accepts firmware upgrades via
UEFI's "Capsule Update" feature. This module allows userland utilities
to evaluate what firmware updates can be applied to this system, and
potentially arrange for those updates to occur.
The ESRT is described as part of the UEFI specification, in version 2.5
which should be available from http://uefi.org/specifications in early
2015. If you're a member of the UEFI Forum, information about its
addition to the standard is available as UEFI Mantis 1090.

Add Documentation/ABI/obsolete/sysfs-block-zram file and list obsolete and
deprecated attributes there. The patch also adds additional information
to zram documentation and describes the basic strategy:
- the existing RW nodes will be downgraded to WO nodes (in 4.11)
- deprecated RO sysfs nodes will eventually be removed (in 4.11)
Users will be additionally notified about deprecated attr usage by
pr_warn_once() (added to every deprecated attr _show()), as suggested by
Minchan Kim.
User space is advised to use zram<id>/stat, zram<id>/io_stat and
zram<id>/mm_stat files.

This patch introduces rework to zram stats. We have per-stat sysfs nodes,
and it makes things a bit hard to use in user space: it doesn't give an
immediate stats 'snapshot', it requires user space to use more syscalls -
open, read, close for every stat file, with appropriate error checks on
every step, etc.
First, zram now accounts block layer statistics, available in
/sys/block/zram<id>/stat and /proc/diskstats files. So some new stats are
available (see Documentation/block/stat.txt), besides, zram's activities
now can be monitored by sysstat's iostat or similar tools.

Second, group currently exported on per-stat basis nodes into two
categories (files):

remove them (and clean up some of the existing stat code) in two years (as
of now, there is no warning printed to syslog about deprecated stats being
used). User space is advised to use the above mentioned 3 files.
This patch (of 7):
Remove sysfs `num_migrated' attribute. We are moving away from per-stat
device attrs towards 3 stat files that will accumulate io and mm stats in
a format similar to block layer statistics in /sys/block/<dev>/stat. That
will be easier to use in user space, and reduce the number of syscalls
needed to read zram device statistics.
`num_migrated' will return back in zram<id>/mm_stat file.

Request-based DM's blk-mq support defaults to off; but a user can easily
change the default using the dm_mod.use_blk_mq module/boot option.
Also, you can check what mode a given request-based DM device is using

This change enabled further cleanup and reduced work (e.g. the
md->io_pool and md->rq_pool isn't created if using blk-mq).

Otherwise, for sequential workloads, the dm_request_fn can allow
excessive request merging at the expense of increased service time.
Add a per-device sysfs attribute to allow the user to control how long a
request, that is a reasonable merge candidate, can be queued on the
request queue. The resolution of this request dispatch deadline is in
microseconds (ranging from 1 to 100000 usecs), to set a 20us deadline:
echo 20 > /sys/block/dm-7/dm/rq_based_seq_io_merge_deadline
The dm_request_fn's merge heuristic and associated extra accounting is
disabled by default (rq_based_seq_io_merge_deadline is 0).
This sysfs attribute is not applicable to bio-based DM devices so it
will only ever report 0 for them.
By allowing a request to remain on the queue it will block others
requests on the queue. But introducing a short dequeue delay has proven
very effective at enabling certain sequential IO workloads on really
fast, yet IOPS constrained, devices to build up slightly larger IOs --
yielding 90+% throughput improvements. Having precise control over the
time taken to wait for larger requests to build affords control beyond
that of waiting for certain IO sizes to accumulate (which would require
a deadline anyway). This knob will only ever make sense with sequential
IO workloads and the particular value used is storage configuration
specific.
Given the expected niche use-case for when this knob is useful it has
been deemed acceptable to expose this relatively crude method for
crafting optimal IO on specific storage -- especially given the solution
is simple yet effective. In the context of DM multipath, it is
advisable to tune this sysfs attribute to a value that offers the best
performance for the common case (e.g. if 4 paths are expected active,
tune for that; if paths fail then performance may be slightly reduced).
Alternatives were explored to have request-based DM autotune this value
(e.g. if/when paths fail) but they were quickly deemed too fragile and
complex to warrant further design and development time. If this problem
proves more common as faster storage emerges we'll have to look at
elevating a generic solution into the block core.

Contact-less IR temperature sensors measure the temperature of an object
by using its thermal radiation. Surfaces with different emissivity
ratios emit different amounts of energy at the same temperature.
IIO_CHAN_INFO_CALIBEMISSIVITY allows the user to inform the sensor of the
emissivity of the object in front of it, in order to effectively measure
its temperature.
A device providing such setting is Melexis's MLX90614:

This patch adds the support for the configuration of the keyboard
backlight on supported Dell laptops.
With this patch it is possible to set:
* keyboard backlight level
* timeout after which the backlight will be automatically turned off
* input activity triggers (keyboard, touchpad, mouse) that enable the backlight
* ambient light settings
The settings are exposed via /sys/class/leds/dell::kbd_backlight/
The code is based on the newly released documentation by Dell in the
libsmbios project.

Some devices have hardware buffers that can store a number of samples
for later consumption. Hardware usually provides interrupts to notify
the processor when the FIFO is full or when it has reached a certain
watermark level. This helps with reducing the number of interrupts to
the host processor and thus it helps decreasing the power consumption.
This patch enables usage of hardware FIFOs for IIO devices in
conjunction with software device buffers. When the hardware FIFO is
enabled the samples are stored in the hardware FIFO. The samples are
later flushed to the device software buffer when the number of entries
in the hardware FIFO reaches the hardware watermark or when a flush
operation is triggered by the user when doing a non-blocking read
on an empty software device buffer.
In order to implement hardware FIFO support the device drivers must
implement the following new operations: setting and getting the
hardware FIFO watermark level, flushing the hardware FIFO to the
software device buffer. The device must also expose information about
the hardware FIFO such it's minimum and maximum watermark and if
necessary a list of supported watermark values. Finally, the device
driver must activate the hardware FIFO when the device buffer is
enabled, if the current device settings allows it.
The software device buffer watermark is passed by the IIO core to the
device driver as a hint for the hardware FIFO watermark. The device
driver can adjust this value to allow for hardware limitations (such
as capping it to the maximum hardware watermark or adjust it to a
value that is supported by the hardware). It can also disable the
hardware watermark (and implicitly the hardware FIFO) it this value is
below the minimum hardware watermark.
Since a driver may support hardware FIFO only when not in triggered
buffer mode (due to different semantics of hardware FIFO sampling and
triggered sampling) this patch changes the IIO core code to allow
falling back to non-triggered buffered mode if no trigger is enabled.

Currently the IIO buffer blocking read only wait until at least one
data element is available.
This patch makes the reader sleep until enough data is collected before
returning to userspace. This should limit the read() calls count when
trying to get data in batches.

So I've been annoyed lately with having a bunch of devices such as i2c
eeproms (for use by VPDs, server world !) and other bits and pieces that
I want to be able to identify from userspace, and possibly provide
additional data about from FW.
Basically, it boils down to correlating the sysfs device with the OF
tree device node, so that user space can use device-tree info such as
additional "location" or "label" (or whatever else we can come up with)
propreties to identify a given device, or get some attributes of use
about it, etc...
Now, so far, we've done that in some subsystem in a fairly ad-hoc basis
using "devspec" properties. For example, PCI creates them if it can
correlate the probed device with a DT node. Some powerpc specific busses
do that too.
However, i2c doesn't and it would be nice to have something more generic
since technically any device can have a corresponding device tree node.
This patch adds an "of_node" symlink to devices that have a non-NULL
dev->of_node pointer, the patch is pretty trivial and seems to work just
fine for me.

assist udev in having sane default names for the devices using the

This adds a tx_maxrate attribute to the tx queue sysfs entry allowing
for max-rate limiting. Along with DCB-ETS and BQL this provides another
knob to tune queue performance. The limit units are Mbps.
By default it is disabled. To disable the rate limitation after it
has been set for a queue, it should be set to zero.

This commit exposes in sysfs the HID country code that is stored in the country
member of hid_device structure. It identifies the country code of localized
hardware.
For example some keyboards use it to exhibit the language of the key layout. It
helps the upper layer to identify the localized hardware and setup the correct
language to use.
For USB HID devices the country code comes for the HID descriptor and for
Bluetooth HID devices it is the HIDCountryCode attribute from the SDP database.

This patch introduces a batched trimming feature, which submits split discard
commands.
This is to avoid long latency due to huge trim commands.
If fstrim was triggered ranging from 0 to the end of device, we should lock
all the checkpoint-related mutexes, resulting in very long latency.

"Let me provide a bit of history first, before describing what is in
this pile.
Originally, there was kSplice as a standalone project that implemented
stop_machine()-based patching for the linux kernel. This project got
later acquired, and the current owner is providing live patching as a
proprietary service, without any intentions to have their
implementation merged.
Then, due to rising user/customer demand, both Red Hat and SUSE
started working on their own implementation (not knowing about each
other), and announced first versions roughly at the same time [1] [2].
The principle difference between the two solutions is how they are
making sure that the patching is performed in a consistent way when it
comes to different execution threads with respect to the semantic
nature of the change that is being introduced.
In a nutshell, kPatch is issuing stop_machine(), then looking at
stacks of all existing processess, and if it decides that the system
is in a state that can be patched safely, it proceeds insterting code
redirection machinery to the patched functions.
On the other hand, kGraft provides a per-thread consistency during one
single pass of a process through the kernel and performs a lazy
contignuous migration of threads from "unpatched" universe to the
"patched" one at safe checkpoints.
If interested in a more detailed discussion about the consistency
models and its possible combinations, please see the thread that
evolved around [3].
It pretty quickly became obvious to the interested parties that it's
absolutely impractical in this case to have several isolated solutions
for one task to co-exist in the kernel. During a dedicated Live
Kernel Patching track at LPC in Dusseldorf, all the interested parties
sat together and came up with a joint aproach that would work for both
distro vendors. Steven Rostedt took notes [4] from this meeting.
And the foundation for that aproach is what's present in this pull
request.
It provides a basic infrastructure for function "live patching" (i.e.
code redirection), including API for kernel modules containing the
actual patches, and API/ABI for userspace to be able to operate on the
patches (look up what patches are applied, enable/disable them, etc).
It's relatively simple and minimalistic, as it's making use of
existing kernel infrastructure (namely ftrace) as much as possible.
It's also self-contained, in a sense that it doesn't hook itself in
any other kernel subsystem (it doesn't even touch any other code).
It's now implemented for x86 only as a reference architecture, but
support for powerpc, s390 and arm is already in the works (adding
arch-specific support basically boils down to teaching ftrace about
regs-saving).
Once this common infrastructure gets merged, both Red Hat and SUSE
have agreed to immediately start porting their current solutions on
top of this, abandoning their out-of-tree code. The plan basically is
that each patch will be marked by flag(s) that would indicate which
consistency model it is willing to use (again, the details have been
sketched out already in the thread at [3]).
Before this happens, the current codebase can be used to patch a large
group of secruity/stability problems the patches for which are not too
complex (in a sense that they don't introduce non-trivial change of
function's return value semantics, they don't change layout of data
structures, etc) -- this corresponds to LEAVE_FUNCTION &&
SWITCH_FUNCTION semantics described at [3].

Some Samsung laptops with SABI3 delay the sleep for 10 seconds after
the lid is closed and do not wake up from sleep after the lid is opened.
A SABI command is needed to enable the better behavior.
Command = 0x6e, d0 = 0x81 enables this behavior. Returns d0 = 0x01.

A user with another laptop in the bug report says that "power button has
to be pressed twice to wake the machine" when he or she enabled the mode
manually using the SABI command. Therefore, it is enabled by default
only for the single laptop that I have tested.

An AFU may optionally contain one or more PCIe like configuration
records, which can be used to identify the AFU.
This patch adds support for exposing the raw config space and the
vendor, device and class code under sysfs. These will appear in a
subdirectory of the AFU device corresponding with the configuration
record number, e.g.

These files behave in much the same way as the equivalent files for PCI
devices, with one exception being that the config file is currently
read-only and restricted to the root user. It is not necessarily
required to be this strict, but we currently do not have a compelling
use-case to make it writable and/or world-readable, so I erred on the
side of being restrictive.

The pedometer needs to filter out false steps that might be generated by
tapping the foot, sitting, etc. To do that it computes the number of
steps that occur in a given time and decides the user is moving only
if this value is over a threshold. E.g.: the user starts moving only
if he takes 4 steps in 3 seconds. This filter is applied only when
the user starts moving.
A device that has such pedometer functionality is Freescale's MMA9553L:

To export this feature, this patch introduces IIO_CHAN_INFO_DEBOUNCE_COUNT
and IIO_CHAN_INFO_DEBOUNCE_TIME. For the pedometer, in_steps_debounce_count
will specify the number of steps that need to occur in
in_steps_debounce_time seconds so that the pedometer decides the user is
moving.

Adds reset to sysfs which will PERST the card. If load_image_on_perst is set
to "user" or "factory", the PERST will cause that image to be loaded.
load_image_on_perst is set to "user" for production.
"none" could be used for debugging. The PSL trace arrays are preserved which
then can be read through debugfs.
PERST also triggers CAPP recovery. An HMI comes in, which is handled by EEH.
EEH unbinds the driver, calls into Sapphire to reinitialize the PHB, then
rebinds the driver.

load_image_on_perst identifies whether a PERST will cause the image to be
flashed to the card. And if so, which image.
Valid entries are: "none", "user" and "factory".
A value of "none" means PERST will not cause the image to be flashed. A
power cycle to the pcie slot is required to load the image.
"user" loads the user provided image and "factory" loads the factory image upon
PERST.
sysfs updates the cxl struct in the driver then calls cxl_update_image_control
to write the vals in the VSEC.

Event parameters are a basic way for partial events to be specified in
sysfs with per-event names given to the fields that need to be filled in
when using a particular event.
It is intended for supporting cases where the single 'cpu' parameter is
insufficient. For example, POWER 8 has events for physical
sockets/cores/cpus that are accessible from with virtual machines. To
keep using the single 'cpu' parameter we'd need to perform a mapping
between Linux's cpus and the physical machine's cpus (in this case Linux
is running under a hypervisor). This isn't possible because bindings
between our cpus and physical cpus may not be fixed, and we probably
won't have a "cpu" on each physical cpu.

Added own device class for TPM. Uses MISC_MAJOR:TPM_MINOR for the
first character device in order to retain backwards compatibility.
Added tpm_dev_release() back attached to the character device.
I've been running this code now for a while on my laptop (Lenovo
T430S) TrouSerS works perfectly without modifications. I don't
believe it breaks anything significantly.
The sysfs attributes that have been placed under the wrong place
and are against sysfs-rules.txt should be probably left to
stagnate under platform device directory and start defining
new sysfs attributes to the char device directory.
Guidelines for future TPM sysfs attributes should be probably
along the lines of
- Single flat set of mandatory sysfs attributes. For example,
current PPI interface is way way too rich when you only want
to use it to clear and activate the TPM.
- Define sysfs attribute if and only if there's no way to get
the value from ring-3. No attributes for TPM properties. It's
just unnecessary maintenance hurdle that we don't want.

This commit introduces code for the live patching core. It implements
an ftrace-based mechanism and kernel interface for doing live patching
of kernel and kernel module functions.
It represents the greatest common functionality set between kpatch and
kgraft and can accept patches built using either method.
This first version does not implement any consistency mechanism that
ensures that old and new code do not run together. In practice, ~90% of

We continued to delete more lines than were added, always a good thing,
but not at a huge rate this release, only about 70k lines removed
overall mostly from removing the horrid bcm driver.
Lots of normal staging driver cleanups and fixes all over the place,
well over a thousand of them, the shortlog shows all the horrid details.
The "contentious" thing here is the movement of the Android binder code
out of staging into the "real" part of the kernel. This is code that
has been stable for a few years now and is working as-is in the tens of
millions of devices with no issues. Yes, the code is horrid, and the
userspace api leaves a lot to be desired, but it's not going to change
due to legacy issues that we have no control over. Because so many
devices and companies rely on this, and the code is stable, might as
well promote it out of staging.
This was all discussed at the Linux Plumbers conference, and everyone
participating agreed that this was the best way forward.
There is work happening to replace the binder code with something new
that is happening right now, but I don't expect to see the results of
that work for another year at the earliest. If that ever happens, and
Android switches over to it, I'll gladly remove this version.
As for maintainers, I'll be glad to maintain this code, I've been doing
it for the past few years with no problems. I'll send a MAINTAINERS
entry for it before 3.19-final is out, still need to talk to the Google
developers about if they are willing to help with it or not, last I
checked they were, which was good.
All of these patches have been in linux-next for a while with no
reported issues.

This time we have some more new material than we used to have during
the last couple of development cycles.
The most important part of it to me is the introduction of a unified
interface for accessing device properties provided by platform
firmware. It works with Device Trees and ACPI in a uniform way and
drivers using it need not worry about where the properties come
from as long as the platform firmware (either DT or ACPI) makes
them available. It covers both devices and "bare" device node
objects without struct device representation as that turns out to
be necessary in some cases. This has been in the works for quite
a few months (and development cycles) and has been approved by
all of the relevant maintainers.
On top of that, some drivers are switched over to the new interface
(at25, leds-gpio, gpio_keys_polled) and some additional changes are
made to the core GPIO subsystem to allow device drivers to manipulate
GPIOs in the "canonical" way on platforms that provide GPIO information
in their ACPI tables, but don't assign names to GPIO lines (in which
case the driver needs to do that on the basis of what it knows about
the device in question). That also has been approved by the GPIO
core maintainers and the rfkill driver is now going to use it.
Second is support for hardware P-states in the intel_pstate driver.
It uses CPUID to detect whether or not the feature is supported by
the processor in which case it will be enabled by default. However,
it can be disabled entirely from the kernel command line if necessary.
Next is support for a platform firmware interface based on ACPI
operation regions used by the PMIC (Power Management Integrated
Circuit) chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR platforms.
That interface is used for manipulating power resources and for
thermal management: sensor temperature reporting, trip point setting
and so on.
Also the ACPI core is now going to support the _DEP configuration
information in a limited way. Basically, _DEP it supposed to reflect
off-the-hierarchy dependencies between devices which may be very
indirect, like when AML for one device accesses locations in an
operation region handled by another device's driver (usually, the
device depended on this way is a serial bus or GPIO controller).
The support added this time is sufficient to make the ACPI battery
driver work on Asus T100A, but it is general enough to be able to
cover some other use cases in the future.
Finally, we have a new cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor.
In addition to the above, there are fixes and cleanups all over the
place as usual and a traditional ACPICA update to a recent upstream
release.
As far as the fixes go, the ACPI LPSS (Low-power Subsystem) driver
for Intel platforms should be able to handle power management of
the DMA engine correctly, the cpufreq-dt driver should interact
with the thermal subsystem in a better way and the ACPI backlight
driver should handle some more corner cases, among other things.
On top of the ACPICA update there are fixes for race conditions
in the ACPICA's interrupt handling code which might lead to some
random and strange looking failures on some systems.
In the cleanups department the most visible part is the series
of commits targeted at getting rid of the CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME
configuration option. That was triggered by a discussion
regarding the generic power domains code during which we realized
that trying to support certain combinations of PM config options
was painful and not really worth it, because nobody would use them
in production anyway. For this reason, we decided to make
CONFIG_PM_SLEEP select CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME and that lead to the
conclusion that the latter became redundant and CONFIG_PM could
be used instead of it. The material here makes that replacement
in a major part of the tree, but there will be at least one more
batch of that in the second part of the merge window.
Specifics:
- Support for retrieving device properties information from ACPI
_DSD device configuration objects and a unified device properties
interface for device drivers (and subsystems) on top of that.
As stated above, this works with Device Trees and ACPI and allows
device drivers to be written in a platform firmware (DT or ACPI)
agnostic way. The at25, leds-gpio and gpio_keys_polled drivers
are now going to use this new interface and the GPIO subsystem
is additionally modified to allow device drivers to assign names
to GPIO resources returned by ACPI _CRS objects (in case _DSD is
not present or does not provide the expected data). The changes
in this set are mostly from Mika Westerberg, Rafael J Wysocki,
Aaron Lu, and Darren Hart with some fixes from others (Fabio Estevam,
Geert Uytterhoeven).
- Support for Hardware Managed Performance States (HWP) as described
in Volume 3, section 14.4, of the Intel SDM in the intel_pstate
driver. CPUID is used to detect whether or not the feature is
supported by the processor. If supported, it will be enabled
automatically unless the intel_pstate=no_hwp switch is present in

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This time we have some more new material than we used to have during
the last couple of development cycles.
The most important part of it to me is the introduction of a unified
interface for accessing device properties provided by platform
firmware. It works with Device Trees and ACPI in a uniform way and
drivers using it need not worry about where the properties come from
as long as the platform firmware (either DT or ACPI) makes them
available. It covers both devices and "bare" device node objects
without struct device representation as that turns out to be necessary
in some cases. This has been in the works for quite a few months (and
development cycles) and has been approved by all of the relevant
maintainers.
On top of that, some drivers are switched over to the new interface
(at25, leds-gpio, gpio_keys_polled) and some additional changes are
made to the core GPIO subsystem to allow device drivers to manipulate
GPIOs in the "canonical" way on platforms that provide GPIO
information in their ACPI tables, but don't assign names to GPIO lines
(in which case the driver needs to do that on the basis of what it
knows about the device in question). That also has been approved by
the GPIO core maintainers and the rfkill driver is now going to use
it.
Second is support for hardware P-states in the intel_pstate driver.
It uses CPUID to detect whether or not the feature is supported by the
processor in which case it will be enabled by default. However, it
can be disabled entirely from the kernel command line if necessary.
Next is support for a platform firmware interface based on ACPI
operation regions used by the PMIC (Power Management Integrated
Circuit) chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR platforms.
That interface is used for manipulating power resources and for
thermal management: sensor temperature reporting, trip point setting
and so on.
Also the ACPI core is now going to support the _DEP configuration
information in a limited way. Basically, _DEP it supposed to reflect
off-the-hierarchy dependencies between devices which may be very
indirect, like when AML for one device accesses locations in an
operation region handled by another device's driver (usually, the
device depended on this way is a serial bus or GPIO controller). The
support added this time is sufficient to make the ACPI battery driver
work on Asus T100A, but it is general enough to be able to cover some
other use cases in the future.
Finally, we have a new cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor.
In addition to the above, there are fixes and cleanups all over the
place as usual and a traditional ACPICA update to a recent upstream
release.
As far as the fixes go, the ACPI LPSS (Low-power Subsystem) driver for
Intel platforms should be able to handle power management of the DMA
engine correctly, the cpufreq-dt driver should interact with the
thermal subsystem in a better way and the ACPI backlight driver should
handle some more corner cases, among other things.
On top of the ACPICA update there are fixes for race conditions in the
ACPICA's interrupt handling code which might lead to some random and
strange looking failures on some systems.
In the cleanups department the most visible part is the series of
commits targeted at getting rid of the CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME configuration
option. That was triggered by a discussion regarding the generic
power domains code during which we realized that trying to support
certain combinations of PM config options was painful and not really
worth it, because nobody would use them in production anyway. For
this reason, we decided to make CONFIG_PM_SLEEP select
CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME and that lead to the conclusion that the latter
became redundant and CONFIG_PM could be used instead of it. The
material here makes that replacement in a major part of the tree, but
there will be at least one more batch of that in the second part of
the merge window.
Specifics:
- Support for retrieving device properties information from ACPI _DSD
device configuration objects and a unified device properties
interface for device drivers (and subsystems) on top of that. As
stated above, this works with Device Trees and ACPI and allows
device drivers to be written in a platform firmware (DT or ACPI)
agnostic way. The at25, leds-gpio and gpio_keys_polled drivers are
now going to use this new interface and the GPIO subsystem is
additionally modified to allow device drivers to assign names to
GPIO resources returned by ACPI _CRS objects (in case _DSD is not
present or does not provide the expected data). The changes in
this set are mostly from Mika Westerberg, Rafael J Wysocki, Aaron
Lu, and Darren Hart with some fixes from others (Fabio Estevam,
Geert Uytterhoeven).
- Support for Hardware Managed Performance States (HWP) as described
in Volume 3, section 14.4, of the Intel SDM in the intel_pstate
driver. CPUID is used to detect whether or not the feature is
supported by the processor. If supported, it will be enabled
automatically unless the intel_pstate=no_hwp switch is present in

After commit b2b49ccbdd (PM: Kconfig: Set PM_RUNTIME if PM_SLEEP is
selected) PM_RUNTIME is always set if PM is set, so quite a few
depend on CONFIG_PM (or even dropped in some cases).
Replace CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME with CONFIG_PM in the USB core code
and documentation.

Some devices need the height of the user to compute various
parameters. One of this devices is Freescale's MMA9553L
(http://www.freescale.com/files/sensors/doc/ref_manual/MMA9553LSWRM.pdf)
that needs the height of the user to compute the stride length which
is used further to determine distance, speed and activity type.
