SPDX patches for 5.7-rc1.
Here are 3 SPDX patches for 5.7-rc1. One fixes up the SPDX tag for a single driver, while the other two go through the tree and add SPDX tags for all of the .gitignore files as needed. Nothing too complex, but you will get a merge conflict with your current tree, that should be trivial to handle (one file modified by two things, one file deleted.) All 3 of these have been in linux-next for a while, with no reported issues other than the merge conflict. mm: allow VM_FAULT_RETRY for multiple times
The idea comes from a discussion between Linus and Andrea [1]. Before this patch we only allow a page fault to retry once. We achieved this by clearing the FAULT_FLAG_ALLOW_RETRY flag when doing handle_mm_fault() the second time. This was majorly used to avoid unexpected starvation of the system by looping over forever to handle the page fault on a single page. However that should hardly happen, and after all for each code path to return a VM_FAULT_RETRY we'll first wait for a condition (during which time we should possibly yield the cpu) to happen before VM_FAULT_RETRY is really returned. This patch removes the restriction by keeping the FAULT_FLAG_ALLOW_RETRY flag when we receive VM_FAULT_RETRY. It means that the page fault handler now can retry the page fault for multiple times if necessary without the need to generate another page fault event. Meanwhile we still keep the FAULT_FLAG_TRIED flag so page fault handler can still identify whether a page fault is the first attempt or not. Then we'll have these combinations of fault flags (only considering ALLOW_RETRY flag and TRIED flag): - ALLOW_RETRY and !TRIED: this means the page fault allows to retry, and this is the first try - ALLOW_RETRY and TRIED: this means the page fault allows to retry, and this is not the first try - !ALLOW_RETRY and !TRIED: this means the page fault does not allow to retry at all - !ALLOW_RETRY and TRIED: this is forbidden and should never be used In existing code we have multiple places that has taken special care of the first condition above by checking against (fault_flags & FAULT_FLAG_ALLOW_RETRY). This patch introduces a simple helper to detect the first retry of a page fault by checking against both (fault_flags & FAULT_FLAG_ALLOW_RETRY) and !(fault_flag & FAULT_FLAG_TRIED) because now even the 2nd try will have the ALLOW_RETRY set, then use that helper in all existing special paths. One example is in __lock_page_or_retry(), now we'll drop the mmap_sem only in the first attempt of page fault and we'll keep it in follow up retries, so old locking behavior will be retained. This will be a nice enhancement for current code [2] at the same time a supporting material for the future userfaultfd-writeprotect work, since in that work there will always be an explicit userfault writeprotect retry for protected pages, and if that cannot resolve the page fault (e.g., when userfaultfd-writeprotect is used in conjunction with swapped pages) then we'll possibly need a 3rd retry of the page fault. It might also benefit other potential users who will have similar requirement like userfault write-protection. GUP code is not touched yet and will be covered in follow up patch. mm: introduce FAULT_FLAG_DEFAULT
Although there're tons of arch-specific page fault handlers, most of them are still sharing the same initial value of the page fault flags. Say, merely all of the page fault handlers would allow the fault to be retried, and they also allow the fault to respond to SIGKILL. Let's define a default value for the fault flags to replace those initial page fault flags that were copied over. With this, it'll be far easier to introduce new fault flag that can be used by all the architectures instead of touching all the archs. sh: Replace setup_irq() by request_irq()
request_irq() is preferred over setup_irq(). Invocations of setup_irq() occur after memory allocators are ready. setup_irq() was required in older kernels as the memory allocator was not available during early boot. kbuild: use KBUILD_DEFCONFIG as the fallback for DEFCONFIG_LIST
Most of the Kconfig commands (except defconfig and all*config) read the .config file as a base set of CONFIG options. When it does not exist, the files in DEFCONFIG_LIST are searched in this order and loaded if found. I do not see much sense in the last two lines in DEFCONFIG_LIST. [1] ARCH_DEFCONFIG The entry for DEFCONFIG_LIST is guarded by 'depends on !UML'. So, the ARCH_DEFCONFIG definition in arch/x86/um/Kconfig is meaningless. arch/{sh,sparc,x86}/Kconfig define ARCH_DEFCONFIG depending on 32 or 64 bit variant symbols. This is a little bit strange; ARCH_DEFCONFIG should be a fixed string because the base config file is loaded before the symbol evaluation stage. Using KBUILD_DEFCONFIG makes more sense because it is fixed before Kconfig is invoked. Fortunately, arch/{sh,sparc,x86}/Makefile define it in the same way, and it works as expected. Hence, replace ARCH_DEFCONFIG with "arch/$(SRCARCH)/configs/$(KBUILD_DEFCONFIG)". [2] arch/$(ARCH)/defconfig This file path is no longer valid. The defconfig files are always located in the arch configs/ directories. $ find arch -name defconfig | sort arch/alpha/configs/defconfig arch/arm64/configs/defconfig arch/csky/configs/defconfig arch/nds32/configs/defconfig arch/riscv/configs/defconfig arch/s390/configs/defconfig arch/unicore32/configs/defconfig The path arch/*/configs/defconfig is already covered by "arch/$(SRCARCH)/configs/$(KBUILD_DEFCONFIG)". So, this file path is not necessary. I moved the default KBUILD_DEFCONFIG to the top Makefile. Otherwise, the 7 architectures listed above would end up with endless loop of syncconfig. scsi: sr: remove references to BLK_DEV_SR_VENDOR, leave it enabled
This kernel configuration is basically enabling/disabling sr driver quirks detection. While these quirks are for fairly rare devices (very old CD burners, and a glucometer), the additional detection of these models is a very minimal amount of code. The logic behind the quirks is always built into the sr driver. This also removes the config from all the defconfig files that are enabling this already. With pidfd_getfd() more uses-cases e.g. bridging socket connections will be possible. - The patchset has also seen some interest from the browser corner. Right now, Firefox is using a SECCOMP_RET_TRAP sandbox managed by a broker process. In the future glibc will start blocking all signals during dlopen() rendering this type of sandbox impossible. y2038: core, driver and file system changes
These are updates to device drivers and file systems that for some reason or another were not included in the kernel in the previous y2038 series. I've gone through all users of time_t again to make sure the kernel is in a long-term maintainable state, replacing all remaining references to time_t with safe alternatives. Some related parts of the series were picked up into the nfsd, xfs, alsa and v4l2 trees. A final set of patches in linux-mm removes the now unused time_t/timeval/timespec types and helper functions after all five branches are merged for linux-5.6, ensuring that no new users get merged. As a result, linux-5.6, or my backport of the patches to 5.4 [1], should be the first release that can serve as a base for a 32-bit system designed to run beyond year 2038, with a few remaining caveats: - All user space must be compiled with a 64-bit time_t, which will be supported in the coming musl-1.2 and glibc-2.32 releases, along with installed kernel headers from linux-5.6 or higher. - Applications that use the system call interfaces directly need to be ported to use the time64 syscalls added in linux-5.1 in place of the existing system calls. This impacts most users of futex() and seccomp() as well as programming languages that have their own runtime environment not based on libc. - Applications that use a private copy of kernel uapi header files or their contents may need to update to the linux-5.6 version, in particular for sound/asound.h, xfs/xfs_fs.h, linux/input.h, linux/elfcore.h, linux/sockios.h, linux/timex.h and linux/can/bcm.h. - A few remaining interfaces cannot be changed to pass a 64-bit time_t in a compatible way, so they must be configured to use CLOCK_MONOTONIC times or (with a y2106 problem) unsigned 32-bit timestamps. As a result, linux-5.6, or my backport of the patches to 5.4 [1], should be the first release that can serve as a base for a 32-bit system designed to run beyond year 2038, with a few remaining caveats: - All user space must be compiled with a 64-bit time_t, which will be supported in the coming musl-1.2 and glibc-2.32 releases, along with installed kernel headers from linux-5.6 or higher. - Applications that use the system call interfaces directly need to be ported to use the time64 syscalls added in linux-5.1 in place of the existing system calls. This impacts most users of futex() and seccomp() as well as programming languages that have their own runtime environment not based on libc. - Applications that use a private copy of kernel uapi header files or their contents may need to update to the linux-5.6 version, in particular for sound/asound.h, xfs/xfs_fs.h, linux/input.h, linux/elfcore.h, linux/sockios.h, linux/timex.h and linux/can/bcm.h. - A few remaining interfaces cannot be changed to pass a 64-bit time_t in a compatible way, so they must be configured to use CLOCK_MONOTONIC times or (with a y2106 problem) unsigned 32-bit timestamps. Most importantly this impacts all users of 'struct input_event'. - All y2038 problems that are present on 64-bit machines also apply to 32-bit machines. Anyway, openat2 part should be ready; that _did_ get sane amount of review and public testing, so here it comes" From Aleksa's description of the series: "For a very long time, extending openat(2) with new features has been incredibly frustrating. This stems from the fact that openat(2) is possibly the most famous counter-example to the mantra "don't silently accept garbage from userspace" -- it doesn't check whether unknown flags are present[1]. This means that (generally) the addition of new flags to openat(2) has been fraught with backwards-compatibility issues (O_TMPFILE has to be defined as __O_TMPFILE|O_DIRECTORY|[O_RDWR or O_WRONLY] to ensure old kernels gave errors, since it's insecure to silently ignore the flag[2]). All new security-related flags therefore have a tough road to being added to openat(2). Furthermore, the need for some sort of control over VFS's path resolution (to avoid malicious paths resulting in inadvertent breakouts) has been a very long-standing desire of many userspace applications. This patchset is a revival of Al Viro's old AT_NO_JUMPS[3] patchset (which was a variant of David Drysdale's O_BENEATH patchset[4] which was a spin-off of the Capsicum project[5]) with a few additions and changes made based on the previous discussion within [6] as well as others I felt were useful. In line with the conclusions of the original discussion of AT_NO_JUMPS, the flag has been split up into separate flags. However, instead of being an openat(2) flag it is provided through a new syscall openat2(2) which provides several other improvements to the openat(2) interface (see the patch description for more details). The following new LOOKUP_* flags are added: LOOKUP_NO_XDEV: Blocks all mountpoint crossings (upwards, downwards, or through absolute links). Absolute pathnames alone in openat(2) do not trigger this. Magic-link traversal which implies a vfsmount jump is also blocked (though magic-link jumps on the same vfsmount are permitted). LOOKUP_NO_MAGICLINKS: Blocks resolution through /proc/$pid/fd-style links. This is done by blocking the usage of nd_jump_link() during resolution in a filesystem. The term "magic-links" is used to match with the only reference to these links in Documentation/, but I'm happy to change the name. It should be noted that this is different to the scope of ~LOOKUP_FOLLOW in that it applies to all path components. However, you can do openat2(NO_FOLLOW|NO_MAGICLINKS) on a magic-link and it will *not* fail (assuming that no parent component was a magic-link), and you will have an fd for the magic-link. In order to correctly detect magic-links, the introduction of a new LOOKUP_MAGICLINK_JUMPED state flag was required. LOOKUP_BENEATH: Disallows escapes to outside the starting dirfd's tree, using techniques such as ".." or absolute links. Absolute paths in openat(2) are also disallowed. Conceptually this flag is to ensure you "stay below" a certain point in the filesystem tree -- but this requires some additional to protect against various races that would allow escape using "..". Currently LOOKUP_BENEATH implies LOOKUP_NO_MAGICLINKS, because it can trivially beam you around the filesystem (breaking the protection). In future, there might be similar safety checks done as in LOOKUP_IN_ROOT, but that requires more discussion. In addition, two new flags are added that expand on the above ideas: LOOKUP_NO_SYMLINKS: Does what it says on the tin. No symlink resolution is allowed at all, including magic-links. Just as with LOOKUP_NO_MAGICLINKS this can still be used with NOFOLLOW to open an fd for the symlink as long as no parent path had a symlink component. LOOKUP_IN_ROOT: This is an extension of LOOKUP_BENEATH that, rather than blocking attempts to move past the root, forces all such movements to be scoped to the starting point. This provides chroot(2)-like protection but without the cost of a chroot(2) for each filesystem operation, as well as being safe against race attacks that chroot(2) is not. If a race is detected (as with LOOKUP_BENEATH) then an error is generated, and similar to LOOKUP_BENEATH it is not permitted to cross magic-links with LOOKUP_IN_ROOT. The primary need for this is from container runtimes, which currently need to do symlink scoping in userspace[7] when opening paths in a potentially malicious container. There is a long list of CVEs that could have bene mitigated by having RESOLVE_THIS_ROOT (such as CVE-2017-1002101, CVE-2017-1002102, CVE-2018-15664, and CVE-2019-5736, just to name a few). In order to make all of the above more usable, I'm working on libpathrs[8] which is a C-friendly library for safe path resolution. It features a userspace-emulated backend if the kernel doesn't support openat2(2). Hopefully we can get userspace to switch to using it, and thus get openat2(2) support for free once it's ready. defined as __O_TMPFILE|O_DIRECTORY|[O_RDWR or O_WRONLY] to ensure old
kernels gave errors, since it's insecure to silently ignore the
flag[2]). All new security-related flags therefore have a tough road to
being added to openat(2).
Userspace also has a hard time figuring out whether a particular flag is
supported on a particular kernel. While it is now possible with
contemporary kernels (thanks to [3]), older kernels will expose unknown
flag bits through fcntl(F_GETFL). Giving a clear -EINVAL during
openat(2) time matches modern syscall designs and is far more
fool-proof.
In addition, the newly-added path resolution restriction LOOKUP flags
(which we would like to expose to user-space) don't feel related to the
pre-existing O_* flag set -- they affect all components of path lookup.
We'd therefore like to add a new flag argument.
Adding a new syscall allows us to finally fix the flag-ignoring problem,
and we can make it extensible enough so that we will hopefully never
need an openat3(2).

Used to specify openat(2)-style flags. However, any unknown flag
bits or otherwise incorrect flag combinations (like O_PATH|O_RDWR)
will result in -EINVAL. In addition, this field is 64-bits wide to
allow for more O_ flags than currently permitted with openat(2).
mode
The file mode for O_CREAT or O_TMPFILE.
Must be set to zero if flags does not contain O_CREAT or O_TMPFILE.
resolve
Restrict path resolution (in contrast to O_* flags they affect all
path components). The current set of flags are as follows (at the
moment, all of the RESOLVE_ flags are implemented as just passing
the corresponding LOOKUP_ flag).

open_how does not contain an embedded size field, because it is of
little benefit (userspace can figure out the kernel open_how size at
runtime fairly easily without it). It also only contains u64s (even
though ->mode arguably should be a u16) to avoid having padding fields
which are never used in the future.
Note that as a result of the new how->flags handling, O_PATH|O_TMPFILE
is no longer permitted for openat(2). As far as I can tell, this has
always been a bug and appears to not be used by userspace (and I've not
seen any problems on my machines by disallowing it). If it turns out
this breaks something, we can special-case it and only permit it for
openat(2) but not openat2(2).
After input from Florian Weimer, the new open_how and flag definitions
are inside a separate header from uapi/linux/fcntl.h, to avoid problems
that glibc has with importing that header.

In a follow-up patch there are over 200 selftests which ensure that this
syscall has the correct semantics and will correctly handle several
attack scenarios.
In addition, I've written a userspace library[4] which provides
convenient wrappers around openat2(RESOLVE_IN_ROOT) (this is necessary
because no other syscalls support RESOLVE_IN_ROOT, and thus lots of care
must be taken when using RESOLVE_IN_ROOT'd file descriptors with other
syscalls). During the development of this patch, I've run numerous
verification tests using libpathrs (showing that the API is reasonably
usable by userspace).

These can be easily implemented separately (such as blocking auto-mount
during resolution).
Furthermore, there are some other proposed changes to the openat(2)
interface (the most obvious example is magic-link hardening[5]) which
would be a good opportunity to add a way for userspace to restrict how
O_PATH file descriptors can be re-opened.
Another possible avenue of future work would be some kind of
CHECK_FIELDS[6] flag which causes the kernel to indicate to userspace
which openat2(2) flags and fields are supported by the current kernel
(to avoid userspace having to go through several guesses to figure it
out).

pinmux_func_gpios[] contains a hole due to the missing function GPIO definition for the "CTX0&CTX1" signal, which is the logical "AND" of the first two CAN outputs. A closer look reveals other issues: - Some functionality is available on alternative pins, but the PINMUX_DATA() entries is using the wrong marks, - Several configurations are missing. Fix this by: - Renaming CTX0CTX1CTX2_MARK, CRX0CRX1_PJ22_MARK, and CRX0CRX1CRX2_PJ20_MARK to CTX0_CTX1_CTX2_MARK, CRX0_CRX1_PJ22_MARK, resp. cpuidle: Drop disabled field from struct cpuidle_state
After recent cpuidle updates the "disabled" field in struct cpuidle_state is only used by two drivers (intel_idle and shmobile cpuidle) for marking unusable idle states, but that may as well be achieved with the help of a state flag, so define an "unusable" idle state flag, CPUIDLE_FLAG_UNUSABLE, make the drivers in question use it instead of the "disabled" field and make the core set CPUIDLE_STATE_DISABLED_BY_DRIVER for the idle states with that flag set. Here is the "big" set of driver core patches for 5.5-rc1 There's a few minor cleanups and fixes in here, but the majority of the patches in here fall into two buckets: - debugfs api cleanups and fixes - driver core device link support for boot dependancy issues The debugfs api cleanups are working to slowly refactor the debugfs apis so that it is even harder to use incorrectly. That work has been happening for the past few kernel releases and will continue over time, it's a long-term project/goal The driver core device link support missed 5.4 by just a bit, so it's been sitting and baking for many months now. It's from Saravana Kannan to help resolve the problems that DT-based systems have at boot time with dependancy graphs and kernel modules. Turns out that no one has actually tried to build a generic arm64 kernel with loads of modules and have it "just work" for a variety of platforms (like a distro kernel) The big problem turned out to be a lack of depandancy information between different areas of DT entries, and the work here resolves that problem and now allows devices to boot properly, and quicker than a monolith kernel. All of these patches have been in linux-next for a long time with no reported issues. sysctl: Remove the sysctl system call
This system call has been deprecated almost since it was introduced, and in a survey of the linux distributions I can no longer find any of them that enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. The only indication that I can find that anyone might care is that a few of the defconfigs in the kernel enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. However this appears in only 31 of 414 defconfigs in the kernel, so I suspect this symbols presence is simply because it is harmless to include rather than because it is necessary. As there appear to be no users of the sysctl system call, remove the code. As this removes one of the few uses of the internal kernel mount of proc I hope this allows for even more simplifications of the proc filesystem. fgraph: Fix function type mismatches of ftrace_graph_return using ftrace_stub
The C compiler is allowing more checks to make sure that function pointers are assigned to the correct prototype function. Unfortunately, the function graph tracer uses a special name with its assigned ftrace_graph_return function pointer that maps to a stub function used by the function tracer (ftrace_stub). The ftrace_graph_return variable is compared to the ftrace_stub in some archs to know if the function graph tracer is enabled or not. This means we can not just simply create a new function stub that compares it without modifying all the archs. Instead, have the linker script create a function_graph_stub that maps to ftrace_stub, and this way we can define the prototype for it to match the prototype of ftrace_graph_return, and make the compiler checks all happy! drivers: move the early platform device support to arch/sh
SuperH is the only user of the current implementation of early platform device support. We want to introduce a more robust approach to early probing. As the first step - move all the current early platform code to arch/sh. In order not to export internal drivers/base functions to arch code for this temporary solution - copy the two needed routines for driver matching from drivers/base/platform.c to arch/sh/drivers/platform_early.c. Also: call early_platform_cleanup() from subsys_initcall() so that it's called after all early devices are probed. The naming of pgtable_page_{ctor,dtor}() seems to have confused a few people, and until recently arm64 used these erroneously/pointlessly for other levels of page table. To make it incredibly clear that these only apply to the PTE level, and to align with the naming of pgtable_pmd_page_{ctor,dtor}(), let's rename them to pgtable_pte_page_{ctor,dtor}(). Most architectures do not implement these functions and use __weak default NOP implementation of pgd_cache_init(). Since there is no such default for pgtable_cache_init(), its empty stub is duplicated among most architectures. Also it might be better to instead make more general improvements to page allocator if this is still so slow. dma-mapping: remove CONFIG_ARCH_NO_COHERENT_DMA_MMAP
CONFIG_ARCH_NO_COHERENT_DMA_MMAP is now functionally identical to !CONFIG_MMU, so remove the separate symbol. The only difference is that arm did not set it for !CONFIG_MMU, but arm uses a separate dma mapping implementation including its own mmap method, which is handled by moving the CONFIG_MMU check in dma_can_mmap so that is only applies to the dma-direct case, just as the other ifdefs for it. driver core: initialize a default DMA mask for platform device
We still treat devices without a DMA mask as defaulting to 32-bits for both mask, but a few releases ago we've started warning about such cases, as they require special cases to work around this sloppyness. Add a dma_mask field to struct platform_device so that we can initialize the dma_mask pointer in struct device and initialize both masks to 32-bits by default, replacing similar functionality in m68k and powerpc. The arch_setup_pdev_archdata hooks is now unused and removed. Note that the code looks a little odd with the various conditionals because we have to support platform_device structures that are statically allocated. mm, kprobes: generalize and rename notify_page_fault() as kprobe_page_fault()
Architectures which support kprobes have very similar boilerplate around
calling kprobe_fault_handler(). Use a helper function in kprobes.h to
unify them, based on the x86 code.
This changes the behaviour for other architectures when preemption is
enabled. Previously, they would have disabled preemption while calling
the kprobe handler. However, preemption would be disabled if this fault
was due to a kprobe, so we know the fault was not due to a kprobe
handler and can simply return failure.

arch: mark syscall number 435 reserved for clone3
A while ago Arnd made it possible to give new system calls the same syscall number on all architectures (except alpha). To not break this nice new feature let's mark 435 for clone3 as reserved on all architectures that do not yet implement it. Even if an architecture does not plan to implement it this ensures that new system calls coming after clone3 will have the same number on all architectures. Driver Core and debugfs changes for 5.3-rc1
Here is the "big" driver core and debugfs changes for 5.3-rc1 It's a lot of different patches, all across the tree due to some api changes and lots of debugfs cleanups. Because of this, there is going to be some merge issues with your tree at the moment, I'll follow up with the expected resolutions to make it easier for you. "This adds two main features.
- First, it adds polling support for pidfds. This allows process
managers to know when a (non-parent) process dies in a race-free
way.
The notification mechanism used follows the same logic that is
currently used when the parent of a task is notified of a child's
death. With this patchset it is possible to put pidfds in an
{e}poll loop and get reliable notifications for process (i.e.
thread-group) exit.
- The second feature compliments the first one by making it possible
to retrieve pollable pidfds for processes that were not created
using CLONE_PIDFD.
A lot of processes get created with traditional PID-based calls
such as fork() or clone() (without CLONE_PIDFD). For these
processes a caller can currently not create a pollable pidfd. This
is a problem for Android's low memory killer (LMK) and service
managers such as systemd.
Both patchsets are accompanied by selftests.
It's perhaps worth noting that the work done so far and the work done
in this branch for pidfd_open() and polling support do already see
some adoption:
- Android is in the process of backporting this work to all their LTS
kernels [1]
- Service managers make use of pidfd_send_signal but will need to
wait until we enable waiting on pidfds for full adoption.
- And projects I maintain make use of both pidfd_send_signal and
CLONE_PIDFD [2] and will use polling support and pidfd_open() too"
