Not caching dst_entries which cause redirects could be exploited by hosts
on the same subnet, causing a severe DoS attack. This effect aggravated
since commit f886497212 ("ipv4: fix dst race in sk_dst_get()").
Lookups causing redirects will be allocated with DST_NOCACHE set which
will force dst_release to free them via RCU. Unfortunately waiting for
RCU grace period just takes too long, we can end up with >1M dst_entries
waiting to be released and the system will run OOM. rcuos threads cannot
catch up under high softirq load.
Attaching the flag to emit a redirect later on to the specific skb allows
us to cache those dst_entries thus reducing the pressure on allocation
and deallocation.

Add ip_cmsg_recv_offset function which takes an offset argument

Current ICMP rate limiting uses inetpeer cache, which is an RBL tree
protected by a lock, meaning that hosts can be stuck hard if all cpus
want to check ICMP limits.
When say a DNS or NTP server process is restarted, inetpeer tree grows
quick and machine comes to its knees.
iptables can not help because the bottleneck happens before ICMP
messages are even cooked and sent.
This patch adds a new global limitation, using a token bucket filter,
controlled by two new sysctl :
icmp_msgs_per_sec - INTEGER
Limit maximal number of ICMP packets sent per second from this host.
Only messages whose type matches icmp_ratemask are
controlled by this limit.
Default: 1000
icmp_msgs_burst - INTEGER
icmp_msgs_per_sec controls number of ICMP packets sent per second,
while icmp_msgs_burst controls the burst size of these packets.
Default: 50
Note that if we really want to send millions of ICMP messages per
second, we might extend idea and infra added in commit 04ca6973f7
("ip: make IP identifiers less predictable") :
add a token bucket in the ip_idents hash and no longer rely on inetpeer.

In "Counting Packets Sent Between Arbitrary Internet Hosts", Jeffrey and
Jedidiah describe ways exploiting linux IP identifier generation to
infer whether two machines are exchanging packets.
With commit 73f156a6e8 ("inetpeer: get rid of ip_id_count"), we
changed IP id generation, but this does not really prevent this
side-channel technique.
This patch adds a random amount of perturbation so that IP identifiers
for a given destination [1] are no longer monotonically increasing after
an idle period.
Note that prandom_u32_max(1) returns 0, so if generator is used at most
once per jiffy, this patch inserts no hole in the ID suite and do not
increase collision probability.
This is jiffies based, so in the worst case (HZ=1000), the id can
rollover after ~65 seconds of idle time, which should be fine.
We also change the hash used in __ip_select_ident() to not only hash
on daddr, but also saddr and protocol, so that ICMP probes can not be
used to infer information for other protocols.
For IPv6, adds saddr into the hash as well, but not nexthdr.
If I ping the patched target, we can see ID are now hard to predict.

For a connected socket we can precompute the flow hash for setting
in skb->hash on output. This is a performance advantage over
calculating the skb->hash for every packet on the connection. The
computation is done using the common hash algorithm to be consistent
with computations done for packets of the connection in other states
where thers is no socket (e.g. time-wait, syn-recv, syn-cookies).
This patch adds sk_txhash to the sock structure. inet_set_txhash and
ip6_set_txhash functions are added which are called from points in
TCP and UDP where socket moves to established state.
skb_set_hash_from_sk is a function which sets skb->hash from the
sock txhash value. This is called in UDP and TCP transmit path when
transmitting within the context of a socket.
Tested: ran super_netperf with 200 TCP_RR streams over a vxlan
interface (in this case skb_get_hash called on every TX packet to
create a UDP source port).

Ideally, we would need to generate IP ID using a per destination IP
generator.
linux kernels used inet_peer cache for this purpose, but this had a huge
cost on servers disabling MTU discovery.
1) each inet_peer struct consumes 192 bytes
2) inetpeer cache uses a binary tree of inet_peer structs,
with a nominal size of ~66000 elements under load.
3) lookups in this tree are hitting a lot of cache lines, as tree depth
is about 20.
4) If server deals with many tcp flows, we have a high probability of
not finding the inet_peer, allocating a fresh one, inserting it in
the tree with same initial ip_id_count, (cf secure_ip_id())
5) We garbage collect inet_peer aggressively.
IP ID generation do not have to be 'perfect'
Goal is trying to avoid duplicates in a short period of time,
so that reassembly units have a chance to complete reassembly of
fragments belonging to one message before receiving other fragments
with a recycled ID.
We simply use an array of generators, and a Jenkin hash using the dst IP
as a key.
ipv6_select_ident() is put back into net/ipv6/ip6_output.c where it
belongs (it is only used from this file)
secure_ip_id() and secure_ipv6_id() no longer are needed.

commit 8f0ea0fe3a (snmp: reduce percpu needs by 50%)
reduced snmp array size to 1, so technically it doesn't have to be

percpu: Remove irqsafe_cpu_xxx variants
We simply say that regular this_cpu use must be safe regardless of
preemption and interrupt state. That has no material change for x86
and s390 implementations of this_cpu operations. However, arches that
do not provide their own implementation for this_cpu operations will
now get code generated that disables interrupts instead of preemption.
probably no arch wants to have SNMP_ARRAY_SZ == 2. At least after
almost 3 years, no one complains.
So, just convert the array to a single pointer and remove snmp_mib_init()

In the dst->output() path for ipv4, the code assumes the skb it has to

ip_mc_output() : The sk_mc_loop() test triggers a WARN_ON() when the

The dst->output() method gets an additional 'struct sock *sk'

IP_PMTUDISC_INTERFACE has a design error: because it does not allow the
generation of fragments if the interface mtu is exceeded, it is very
hard to make use of this option in already deployed name server software
for which I introduced this option.
This patch adds yet another new IP_MTU_DISCOVER option to not honor any
path mtu information and not accepting new icmp notifications destined for
the socket this option is enabled on. But we allow outgoing fragmentation
in case the packet size exceeds the outgoing interface mtu.
As such this new option can be used as a drop-in replacement for
IP_PMTUDISC_DONT, which is currently in use by most name server software
making the adoption of this option very smooth and easy.
The original advantage of IP_PMTUDISC_INTERFACE is still maintained:
ignoring incoming path MTU updates and not honoring discovered path MTUs
in the output path.

This patch splits the ip6_datagram_recv_ctl into two functions, one

ip6_datagram_recv_*_ctl never reported back any errors, so we can make

While forwarding we should not use the protocol path mtu to calculate
the mtu for a forwarded packet but instead use the interface mtu.
We mark forwarded skbs in ip_forward with IPSKB_FORWARDED, which was
introduced for multicast forwarding. But as it does not conflict with
our usage in unicast code path it is perfect for reuse.
I moved the functions ip_sk_accept_pmtu, ip_sk_use_pmtu and ip_skb_dst_mtu
along with the new ip_dst_mtu_maybe_forward to net/ip.h to fix circular
dependencies because of IPSKB_FORWARDED.
Because someone might have written a software which does probe
destinations manually and expects the kernel to honour those path mtus
I introduced a new per-namespace "ip_forward_use_pmtu" knob so someone
can disable this new behaviour. We also still use mtus which are locked on a
route for forwarding.
The reason for this change is, that path mtus information can be injected
into the kernel via e.g. icmp_err protocol handler without verification
of local sockets. As such, this could cause the IPv4 forwarding path to
wrongfully emit fragmentation needed notifications or start to fragment
packets along a path.
Tunnel and ipsec output paths clear IPCB again, thus IPSKB_FORWARDED
won't be set and further fragmentation logic will use the path mtu to
determine the fragmentation size. They also recheck packet size with
help of path mtu discovery and report appropriate errors.

TCP listener refactoring, part 4 :
To speed up inet lookups, we moved IPv4 addresses from inet to struct
sock_common
Now is time to do the same for IPv6, because it permits us to have fast
lookups for all kind of sockets, including upcoming SYN_RECV.
Getting IPv6 addresses in TCP lookups currently requires two extra cache
lines, plus a dereference (and memory stall).
inet6_sk(sk) does the dereference of inet_sk(__sk)->pinet6
This patch is way bigger than its IPv4 counter part, because for IPv4,
we could add aliases (inet_daddr, inet_rcv_saddr), while on IPv6,
it's not doable easily.
inet6_sk(sk)->daddr becomes sk->sk_v6_daddr
inet6_sk(sk)->rcv_saddr becomes sk->sk_v6_rcv_saddr
And timewait socket also have tw->tw_v6_daddr & tw->tw_v6_rcv_saddr
at the same offset.
We get rid of INET6_TW_MATCH() as INET6_MATCH() is now the generic
macro.

If IP_TOS or IP_TTL are specified as ancillary data, then sendmsg() sends out
packets with the specified TTL or TOS overriding the socket values specified
with the traditional setsockopt().
The struct inet_cork stores the values of TOS, TTL and priority that are
passed through the struct ipcm_cookie. If there are user-specified TOS
(tos != -1) or TTL (ttl != 0) in the struct ipcm_cookie, these values are
used to override the per-socket values. In case of TOS also the priority

If local fragmentation is allowed, then ip_select_ident() and
ip_select_ident_more() need to generate unique IDs to ensure
correct defragmentation on the peer.
For example, if IPsec (tunnel mode) has to encrypt large skbs
that have local_df bit set, then all IP fragments that belonged
to different ESP datagrams would have used the same identificator.
If one of these IP fragments would get lost or reordered, then
peer could possibly stitch together wrong IP fragments that did
not belong to the same datagram. This would lead to a packet loss

IPv4 conntrack defragments incoming packet at the PRE_ROUTING hook and

tcp_v4_send_reset() and tcp_v4_send_ack() use a single socket
per network namespace.
This leads to bad behavior on multiqueue NICS, because many cpus
contend for the socket lock and once socket lock is acquired, extra
false sharing on various socket fields slow down the operations.
To better resist to attacks, we use a percpu socket. Each cpu can
run without contention, using appropriate memory (local node)
Additional features :
1) We also mirror the queue_mapping of the incoming skb, so that
answers use the same queue if possible.
2) Setting SOCK_USE_WRITE_QUEUE socket flag speedup sock_wfree()
3) We now limit the number of in-flight RST/ACK [1] packets
per cpu, instead of per namespace, and we honor the sysctl_wmem_default
limit dynamically. (Prior to this patch, sysctl_wmem_default value was
copied at boot time, so any further change would not affect tcp_sock
limit)
[1] These packets are only generated when no socket was matched for
the incoming packet.

This change is meant to add a control for disabling early socket demux.
The main motivation behind this patch is to provide an option to disable
the feature as it adds an additional cost to routing that reduces overall
throughput by up to 5%. For example one of my systems went from 12.1Mpps
to 11.6 after the early socket demux was added. It looks like the reason
for the regression is that we are now having to perform two lookups, first
the one for an established socket, and then the one for the routing table.
By adding this patch and toggling the value for ip_early_demux to 0 I am
able to get back to the 12.1Mpps I was previously seeing.

We are going to delete the Token ring support. This removes any
special processing in the core networking for token ring, (aside
from net/tr.c itself), leaving the drivers and remaining tokenring
support present but inert.
The mass removal of the drivers and net/tr.c will be in a separate
commit, so that the history of these files that we still care
about won't have the giant deletion tied into their history.

OK I found it, I did some extra tests and believe its ready.
[PATCH net-next] ipv4: IP_PKTINFO doesnt need dst reference
When a socket uses IP_PKTINFO notifications, we currently force a dst
reference for each received skb. Reader has to access dst to get needed
information (rt_iif & rt_spec_dst) and must release dst reference.
We also forced a dst reference if skb was put in socket backlog, even
without IP_PKTINFO handling. This happens under stress/load.
We can instead store the needed information in skb->cb[], so that only
softirq handler really access dst, improving cache hit ratios.
This removes two atomic operations per packet, and false sharing as
well.
On a benchmark using a mono threaded receiver (doing only recvmsg()
calls), I can reach 720.000 pps instead of 570.000 pps.
IP_PKTINFO is typically used by DNS servers, and any multihomed aware
UDP application.

There is a long standing bug in linux tcp stack, about ACK messages sent
on behalf of TIME_WAIT sockets.
In the IP header of the ACK message, we choose to reflect TOS field of
incoming message, and this might break some setups.
Example of things that were broken :
- Routing using TOS as a selector
- Firewalls
- Trafic classification / shaping
We now remember in timewait structure the inet tos field and use it in
ACK generation, and route lookup.
Notes :
- We still reflect incoming TOS in RST messages.
- We could extend MuraliRaja Muniraju patch to report TOS value in
netlink messages for TIME_WAIT sockets.
- A patch is needed for IPv6

Andi Kleen and Tim Chen reported huge contention on inetpeer
unused_peers.lock, on memcached workload on a 40 core machine, with
disabled route cache.
It appears we constantly flip peers refcnt between 0 and 1 values, and
we must insert/remove peers from unused_peers.list, holding a contended
spinlock.
Remove this list completely and perform a garbage collection on-the-fly,
at lookup time, using the expired nodes we met during the tree
traversal.
This removes a lot of code, makes locking more standard, and obsoletes
two sysctls (inet_peer_gc_mintime and inet_peer_gc_maxtime). This also
removes two pointers in inet_peer structure.
There is still a false sharing effect because refcnt is in first cache
line of object [were the links and keys used by lookups are located], we
might move it at the end of inet_peer structure to let this first cache
line mostly read by cpus.

This allows us to acquire the exact route keying information from the
protocol, however that might be managed.
It handles all of the possibilities, from the simplest case of storing
the key in inet->cork.fl to the more complex setup SCTP has where
individual transports determine the flow.

When we fast path datagram sends to avoid locking by putting
the inet_cork on the stack we use up lots of space that isn't
necessary.
This is because inet_cork contains a "struct flowi" which isn't
used in these code paths.
Split inet_cork to two parts, "inet_cork" and "inet_cork_full".
Only the latter of which has the "struct flowi" and is what is
stored in inet_sock.

We lack proper synchronization to manipulate inet->opt ip_options
Problem is ip_make_skb() calls ip_setup_cork() and
ip_setup_cork() possibly makes a copy of ipc->opt (struct ip_options),
without any protection against another thread manipulating inet->opt.
Another thread can change inet->opt pointer and free old one under us.
Use RCU to protect inet->opt (changed to inet->inet_opt).
Instead of handling atomic refcounts, just copy ip_options when
necessary, to avoid cache line dirtying.
We cant insert an rcu_head in struct ip_options since its included in
skb->cb[], so this patch is large because I had to introduce a new
ip_options_rcu structure.

My commit 6d55cb91a0 (gre: fix hard header destination
address checking) broke multicast.
The reason is that ip_gre used to get ipgre_header() calls with
zero destination if we have NOARP or multicast destination. Instead
the actual target was decided at ipgre_tunnel_xmit() time based on
per-protocol dissection.
Instead of allowing the "abuse" of ->header() calls with invalid
destination, this creates multicast mappings for ip_gre. This also
fixes "ip neigh show nud noarp" to display the proper multicast
mappings used by the gre device.

This patch adds the helper ip_make_skb which is like ip_append_data
and ip_push_pending_frames all rolled into one, except that it does
not send the skb produced. The sending part is carried out by
ip_send_skb, which the transport protocol can call after it has
tweaked the skb.
It is meant to be called in cases where corking is not used should
have a one-to-one correspondence to sendmsg.
This patch also adds the helper ip_finish_skb which is meant to
be replace ip_push_pending_frames when corking is required.
Previously the protocol stack would peek at the socket write
queue and add its header to the first packet. With ip_finish_skb,
the protocol stack can directly operate on the final skb instead,
just like the non-corking case with ip_make_skb.

Always go through a new ip4_dst_hoplimit() helper, just like ipv6.
This allowed several simplifications:
1) The interim dst_metric_hoplimit() can go as it's no longer
userd.
2) The sysctl_ip_default_ttl entry no longer needs to use
ipv4_doint_and_flush, since the sysctl is not cached in
routing cache metrics any longer.
3) ipv4_doint_and_flush no longer needs to be exported and
therefore can be marked static.
When ipv4_doint_and_flush_strategy was removed some time ago,
the external declaration in ip.h was mistakenly left around
so kill that off too.
We have to move the sysctl_ip_default_ttl declaration into
ipv4's route cache definition header net/route.h, because
currently net/ip.h (where the declaration lives now) has
a back dependency on net/route.h

/proc/net/snmp and /proc/net/netstat expose SNMP counters.
Width of these counters is either 32 or 64 bits, depending on the size
of "unsigned long" in kernel.
This means user program parsing these files must already be prepared to
deal with 64bit values, regardless of user program being 32 or 64 bit.
This patch introduces 64bit snmp values for IPSTAT mib, where some
counters can wrap pretty fast if they are 32bit wide.

commit 66018506e1 (ip: Router Alert RCU conversion) introduced RCU
lookups to ip_call_ra_chain(). It missed proper deinit phase :
When ip_ra_control() deletes an ip_ra_chain, it should make sure
ip_call_ra_chain() users can not start to use socket during the rcu
grace period. It should also delay the sock_put() after the grace
period, or we risk a premature socket freeing and corruptions, as
raw sockets are not rcu protected yet.

When we have L3 tunnels with different inner/outer families
(i.e. IPV4/IPV6) which use a multicast address as the outer tunnel
destination address, multicast packets will be loopbacked back to the
sending socket even if IP*_MULTICAST_LOOP is set to disabled.
The mc_loop flag is present in the family specific part of the socket
(e.g. the IPv4 or IPv4 specific part). setsockopt sets the inner
family mc_loop flag. When the packet is pushed through the L3 tunnel
it will eventually be processed by the outer family which if different

When fragments from bridge netfilter are passed to IPv4 or IPv6 conntrack
and a reassembly queue with the same fragment key already exists from
reassembling a similar packet received on a different device (f.i. with
multicasted fragments), the reassembled packet might continue on a different
codepath than where the head fragment originated. This can cause crashes
in bridge netfilter when a fragment received on a non-bridge device (and
thus with skb->nf_bridge == NULL) continues through the bridge netfilter
code.
Add a new reassembly identifier for packets originating from bridge
netfilter and use it to put those packets in insolated queues.

sysctl_local_port_range_lock were on separate cache lines.
Moreover, sysctl_local_port_range[] was close to unrelated

Moving these two variables in a structure can help data

tw belongs to, I have to use it only when NET_NS is off. When the net
namespaces are on, I use the INET_INC_STATS_BH for each bucket.

Most callers of the LOCAL_OUT chain will set the IP packet length and
header checksum before doing so. They also share the same output
function dst_output.
This patch creates a new function called ip_local_out which does all
of that and converts the appropriate users over to it.
Apart from removing duplicate code, it will also help in merging the
IPsec output path once the same thing is done for IPv6.

An IPoIB subnet on an IB fabric that spans multiple IB subnets can't
use link-local scope in multicast GIDs. The existing routines that
map IP/IPv6 multicast addresses into IB link-level addresses hard-code
the scope to link-local, and they also leave the partition key field
uninitialised. This patch adds a parameter (the link-level broadcast
address) to the mapping routines, allowing them to initialise both the
scope and the P_Key appropriately, and fixes up the call sites.
The next step will be to add a way to configure the scope for an IPoIB
interface.

Some sysctl variables are used to tune the frag queues
management and it will be useful to work with them in
a common way in the future, so move them into one
structure, moreover they are the same for all the frag
management codes.
I don't place them in the existing inet_frags object,
introduced in the previous patch for two reasons:
1. to keep them in the __read_mostly section;
2. not to export the whole inet_frags objects outside.

There are some objects that are common in all the places
which are used to keep track of frag queues, they are:
* hash table
* LRU list
* rw lock
* rnd number for hash function
* the number of queues
* the amount of memory occupied by queues
* secret timer
Move all this stuff into one structure (struct inet_frags)
to make it possible use them uniformly in the future. Like
with the previous patch this mostly consists of hunks like
- write_lock(&ipfrag_lock);
+ write_lock(&ip4_frags.lock);
To address the issue with exporting the number of queues and
the amount of memory occupied by queues outside the .c file
they are declared in, I introduce a couple of helpers.

When a packet matching an IPsec policy is SNATed so it doesn't match any
policy anymore it looses its xfrm bundle, which makes xfrm4_output_finish
crash because of a NULL pointer dereference.
This patch directs these packets to the original output path instead. Since
the packets have already passed the POST_ROUTING hook, but need to start at
the beginning of the original output path which includes another
POST_ROUTING invocation, a flag is added to the IPCB to indicate that the
packet was rerouted and doesn't need to pass the POST_ROUTING hook again.

ip_route_me_harder doesn't use the port numbers of the xfrm lookup and
uses ip_route_input for non-local addresses which doesn't do a xfrm
lookup, ip6_route_me_harder doesn't do a xfrm lookup at all.
Use xfrm_decode_session and do the lookup manually, make sure both
only do the lookup if the packet hasn't been transformed already.
Makeing sure the lookup only happens once needs a new field in the
IP6CB, which exceeds the size of skb->cb. The size of skb->cb is
increased to 48b. Apparently the IPv6 mobile extensions need some
more room anyway.

even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git

3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
Let it rip!
