d7caa33687 pstore: Make default pstorefs root dir perms 0750
Currently only DMESG and CONSOLE record types are protected, and it isn't
obvious that they are using a capability check. Instead switch to explicit
root directory mode of 0750 to keep files private by default. This will
allow the removal of the capability check, which was non-obvious and
forces a process to have possibly too much privilege when simple post-boot
chgrp for readers would be possible without it.

78dcf73421 Merge branch 'work.mount' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs
Pull ->s_options removal from Al Viro:
"Preparations for fsmount/fsopen stuff (coming next cycle). Everything
gets moved to explicit ->show_options(), killing ->s_options off +
some cosmetic bits around fs/namespace.c and friends. Basically, the

It's not strictly required for this merge window, but it would reduce

called without checking type and compressed flag. Warning will be
reported if data is uncompressed. Pstore type PSTORE_TYPE_PPC_OPAL,
PSTORE_TYPE_PPC_COMMON doesn't contain compressed data and warning get
printed part of dmesg.

Merge tag 'hwparam-20170420' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dhowells/linux-fs

Pull hw lockdown support from David Howells:
"Annotation of module parameters that configure hardware resources
including ioports, iomem addresses, irq lines and dma channels.

This allows a future patch to prohibit the use of such module
parameters to prevent that hardware from being abused to gain access
to the running kernel image as part of locking the kernel down under
  UEFI secure boot conditions.

  Annotations are made by changing:

        module_param(n, t, p)
        module_param_named(n, v, t, p)
        module_param_array(n, t, m, p)

  to:

        module_param_hw(n, t, hwtype, p)
        module_param_hw_named(n, v, t, hwtype, p)
        module_param_hw_array(n, t, hwtype, m, p)

where the module parameter refers to a hardware setting

hwtype specifies the type of the resource being configured. This can
  be one of:

ioport Module parameter configures an I/O port
iomem Module parameter configures an I/O mem address
ioport_or_iomem Module parameter could be either (runtime set)
irq Module parameter configures an I/O port
dma Module parameter configures a DMA channel
dma_addr Module parameter configures a DMA buffer address
other Module parameter configures some other value

Note that the hwtype is compile checked, but not currently stored (the
lockdown code probably won't require it). It is, however, there for
  future use.

A bonus is that the hwtype can also be used for grepping.

The intention is for the kernel to ignore or reject attempts to set
annotated module parameters if lockdown is enabled. This applies to
options passed on the boot command line, passed to insmod/modprobe or
direct twiddling in /sys/module/ parameter files.

The module initialisation then needs to handle the parameter not being
set, by (1) giving an error, (2) probing for a value or (3) using a
  reasonable default.

What I can't do is just reject a module out of hand because it may
take a hardware setting in the module parameters. Some important
modules, some ipmi stuff for instance, both probe for hardware and
allow hardware to be manually specified; if the driver is aborts with
any error, you don't get any ipmi hardware.

Further, trying to do this entirely in the module initialisation code
  doesn't protect against sysfs twiddling.

[!] Note that in and of itself, this series of patches should have no
effect on the the size of the kernel or code execution - that is
left to a patch in the next series to effect. It does mark
annotated kernel parameters with a KERNEL_PARAM_FL_HWPARAM flag in
      an already existing field"

3a7d2fd16c pstore: Solve lockdep warning by moving inode locks
Lockdep complains about a possible deadlock between mount and unlink
(which is technically impossible), but fixing this improves possible
future multiple-backend support, and keeps locking in the right order.

The lockdep warning could be triggered by unlinking a file in the
pstore filesystem:

b90fe0c4e0 Annotate hardware config module parameters in fs/pstore/
When the kernel is running in secure boot mode, we lock down the kernel to
prevent userspace from modifying the running kernel image. Whilst this
includes prohibiting access to things like /dev/mem, it must also prevent
access by means of configuring driver modules in such a way as to cause a
device to access or modify the kernel image.

To this end, annotate module_param* statements that refer to hardware
configuration and indicate for future reference what type of parameter they
specify. The parameter parser in the core sees this information and can
skip such parameters with an error message if the kernel is locked down.
The module initialisation then runs as normal, but just sees whatever the
default values for those parameters is.

Note that we do still need to do the module initialisation because some
drivers have viable defaults set in case parameters aren't specified and
some drivers support automatic configuration (e.g. PNP or PCI) in addition
to manually coded parameters.

This patch annotates drivers in fs/pstore/.

70ad35db33 pstore: Convert console write to use ->write_buf
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't know why it needs to copy the
input buffer to psinfo->buf and then write. Instead we can write the
input buffer directly. The only implementation that supports console
message (i.e. ramoops) already does it for ftrace messages.

For the upcoming virtio backend driver, it needs to protect psinfo->buf
overwritten from console messages. If it could use ->write_buf method
instead of ->write, the problem will be solved easily.

When update_ms is set, pstore_get_records() will be called when there's

contend with the open-read-close loop. Depending on the implementation

7a0032f504 pstore: Use global ftrace filters for function trace filtering
Currently, pstore doesn't have any filters setup for function tracing.
This has the associated overhead and may not be useful for users looking

ftrace's regular function trace filtering is done writing to
tracing/set_ftrace_filter however this is not available if not requested.
In order to be able to use this feature, the support to request global
filtering introduced earlier in the series should be requested before
registering the ftrace ops. Here we do the same.

fbccdeb8d7 pstore: Add ftrace timestamp counter
In preparation for merging the per CPU buffers into one buffer when
we retrieve the pstore ftrace data, we store the timestamp as a
counter in the ftrace pstore record. We store the CPU number as well
if !PSTORE_CPU_IN_IP, in this case we shift the counter and may lose
ordering there but we preserve the same record size. The timestamp counter
is also racy, and not doing any locking or synchronization here results
in the benefit of lower overhead. Since we don't care much here for exact
ordering of function traces across CPUs, we don't synchronize and may lose
some counter updates but I'm ok with that.

Using trace_clock() results in much lower performance so avoid using it
since we don't want accuracy in timestamp and need a rough ordering to
perform merge.

Currently pstore has a global spinlock for all zones. Since the zones
are independent and modify different areas of memory, there's no need

078cd8279e fs: Replace CURRENT_TIME with current_time() for inode timestamps
CURRENT_TIME macro is not appropriate for filesystems as it
doesn't use the right granularity for filesystem timestamps.
Use current_time() instead.

CURRENT_TIME is also not y2038 safe.

This is also in preparation for the patch that transitions
vfs timestamps to use 64 bit time and hence make them
y2038 safe. As part of the effort current_time() will be
extended to do range checks. Hence, it is necessary for all
file system timestamps to use current_time(). Also,
current_time() will be transitioned along with vfs to be
y2038 safe.

Note that whenever a single call to current_time() is used
to change timestamps in different inodes, it is because they
share the same time granularity.

d5a9bf0b38 pstore/core: drop cmpxchg based updates
I have here a FPGA behind PCIe which exports SRAM which I use for
pstore. Now it seems that the FPGA no longer supports cmpxchg based
updates and writes back 0xff…ff and returns the same. This leads to
crash during crash rendering pstore useless.
Since I doubt that there is much benefit from using cmpxchg() here, I am
dropping this atomic access and use the spinlock based version.

4407de74df pstore/ramoops: fixup driver removal
A basic rmmod ramoops segfaults. Let's see why.

Since commit 34f0ec82e0 ("pstore: Correct the max_dump_cnt clearing of
ramoops") sets ->max_dump_cnt to zero before looping over ->przs but we
didn't use it before that either.

And since commit ee1d267423 ("pstore: add pstore unregister") we free
that memory on rmmod.

But even then, we looped until a NULL pointer or ERR. I don't see where
it is ensured that the last member is NULL. Let's try this instead:
simply error recovery and free. Clean up in error case where resources
were allocated. And then, in the free path, rely on ->max_dump_cnt in
the free path.

Instead of a ramoops-specific node, use a child node of /reserved-memory.

35da60941e pstore/ram: add Device Tree bindings
ramoops is one of the remaining places where ARM vendors still rely on
board-specific shims. Device Tree lets us replace those shims with
generic code.

These bindings mirror the ramoops module parameters, with two small
differences:

(1) dump_oops becomes an optional "no-dump-oops" property, since ramoops
    sets dump_oops=1 by default.

(2) mem_type=1 becomes the more self-explanatory "unbuffered" property.

52d210d961 pstore: drop file opened reference count
In ee1d267423 ("pstore: add pstore unregister") I added:
	.owner = THIS_MODULE,
in both pstore_fs_type and pstore_file_operations to increase a reference
count when pstore filesystem is mounted and pstore file is opened.

But, it's repetitive. There is no need to increase the opened reference
count. We only need to increase the mounted reference count. When a file
is opened, the filesystem can't be unmounted. Hence the pstore module
can't be unloaded either.

So I drop the opened reference count in this patch.

8cfc8ddc99 pstore: add lzo/lz4 compression support
Like zlib compression in pstore, this patch added lzo and lz4
compression support so that users can have more options and better
compression ratio.

The original code treats the compressed data together with the
uncompressed ECC correction notice by using zlib decompress. The
ECC correction notice is missing in the decompression process. The
treatment also makes lzo and lz4 not working. So I treat them
separately by using pstore_decompress() to treat the compressed
data, and memcpy() to treat the uncompressed ECC correction notice.

The commit f0e2efcfd2 ("pstore: do not use message compression

09cbfeaf1a mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macros
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time
ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page
cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE.

This promise never materialized. And unlikely will.

We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to
PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether
PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case,
especially on the border between fs and mm.

Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much
breakage to be doable.

Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are
not.

The changes are pretty straight-forward:

 - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;

 - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;

 - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN};

 - page_cache_get() -> get_page();

 - page_cache_release() -> put_page();

This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using
script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files.
I've called spatch for them manually.

The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to
PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later.

There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll
fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also
will be addressed with the separate patch.

0cbee99269 Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull user namespace updates from Eric Biederman:
"Long ago and far away when user namespaces where young it was realized
that allowing fresh mounts of proc and sysfs with only user namespace
permissions could violate the basic rule that only root gets to decide
if proc or sysfs should be mounted at all.

Some hacks were put in place to reduce the worst of the damage could
be done, and the common sense rule was adopted that fresh mounts of
proc and sysfs should allow no more than bind mounts of proc and
sysfs. Unfortunately that rule has not been fully enforced.

There are two kinds of gaps in that enforcement. Only filesystems
mounted on empty directories of proc and sysfs should be ignored but
the test for empty directories was insufficient. So in my tree
directories on proc, sysctl and sysfs that will always be empty are
created specially. Every other technique is imperfect as an ordinary
directory can have entries added even after a readdir returns and
shows that the directory is empty. Special creation of directories
for mount points makes the code in the kernel a smidge clearer about
it's purpose. I asked container developers from the various container
projects to help test this and no holes were found in the set of mount
points on proc and sysfs that are created specially.

This set of changes also starts enforcing the mount flags of fresh
mounts of proc and sysfs are consistent with the existing mount of
proc and sysfs. I expected this to be the boring part of the work but
unfortunately unprivileged userspace winds up mounting fresh copies of
proc and sysfs with noexec and nosuid clear when root set those flags
on the previous mount of proc and sysfs. So for now only the atime,
read-only and nodev attributes which userspace happens to keep
consistent are enforced. Dealing with the noexec and nosuid
  attributes remains for another time.

This set of changes also addresses an issue with how open file
descriptors from /proc/<pid>/ns/* are displayed. Recently readlink of
/proc/<pid>/fd has been triggering a WARN_ON that has not been
meaningful since it was added (as all of the code in the kernel was
converted) and is not now actively wrong.

There is also a short list of issues that have not been fixed yet that
  I will mention briefly.

It is possible to rename a directory from below to above a bind mount.
At which point any directory pointers below the renamed directory can
be walked up to the root directory of the filesystem. With user
namespaces enabled a bind mount of the bind mount can be created
allowing the user to pick a directory whose children they can rename
to outside of the bind mount. This is challenging to fix and doubly
so because all obvious solutions must touch code that is in the
  performance part of pathname resolution.

As mentioned above there is also a question of how to ensure that
developers by accident or with purpose do not introduce exectuable
files on sysfs and proc and in doing so introduce security regressions
in the current userspace that will not be immediately obvious and as
such are likely to require breaking userspace in painful ways once
  they are recognized"

027bc8b082 pstore-ram: Allow optional mapping with pgprot_noncached
On some ARMs the memory can be mapped pgprot_noncached() and still
be working for atomic operations. As pointed out by Colin Cross
<ccross@android.com>, in some cases you do want to use
pgprot_noncached() if the SoC supports it to see a debug printk
just before a write hanging the system.

On ARMs, the atomic operations on strongly ordered memory are
implementation defined. So let's provide an optional kernel parameter
for configuring pgprot_noncached(), and use pgprot_writecombine() by
default.

7ae9cb8193 pstore-ram: Fix hangs by using write-combine mappings
Currently trying to use pstore on at least ARMs can hang as we're
mapping the peristent RAM with pgprot_noncached().

On ARMs, pgprot_noncached() will actually make the memory strongly
ordered, and as the atomic operations pstore uses are implementation
defined for strongly ordered memory, they may not work. So basically
atomic operations have undefined behavior on ARM for device or strongly
ordered memory types.

Let's fix the issue by using write-combine variants for mappings. This
corresponds to normal, non-cacheable memory on ARM. For many other
architectures, this change does not change the mapping type as by
default we have:

#define pgprot_writecombine pgprot_noncached

The reason why pgprot_noncached() was originaly used for pstore
is because Colin Cross <ccross@android.com> had observed lost
debug prints right before a device hanging write operation on some
systems. For the platforms supporting pgprot_noncached(), we can
add a an optional configuration option to support that. But let's
get pstore working first before adding new features.

a28726b4fb pstore/ram: Strip ramoops header for correct decompression
pstore compression/decompression was added during 3.12.
The ramoops driver prepends a "====timestamp.timestamp-C|D\n"
header to the compressed record before handing it over to pstore
driver which doesn't know about the header. In pstore_decompress(),
the pstore driver reads the first "==" as a zlib header, so the
decompression always fails. For example, this causes the driver
to write /dev/pstore/dmesg-ramoops-0.enc.z instead of
/dev/pstore/dmesg-ramoops-0.

This patch makes the ramoops driver remove the header before
pstore decompression.

02b9984d64 fs: push sync_filesystem() down to the file system's remount_fs()
Previously, the no-op "mount -o mount /dev/xxx" operation when the
file system is already mounted read-write causes an implied,
unconditional syncfs(). This seems pretty stupid, and it's certainly
documented or guaraunteed to do this, nor is it particularly useful,
except in the case where the file system was mounted rw and is getting
remounted read-only.

However, it's possible that there might be some file systems that are
actually depending on this behavior. In most file systems, it's
probably fine to only call sync_filesystem() when transitioning from
read-write to read-only, and there are some file systems where this is
not needed at all (for example, for a pseudo-filesystem or something
like romfs).

7de8fe2fa8 pstore: Adjust buffer size for compression for smaller registered buffers
When backends (ex: efivars) have smaller registered buffers, the
big_oops_buf is too big for them as number of repeated occurences
in the text captured will be less. What happens is that pstore takes
too big a bite from the dmesg log and then finds it cannot compress it
enough to meet the backend block size. Patch takes care of adjusting
the buffer size based on the registered buffer size. cmpr values have
been arrived after doing experiments with plain text for buffers of

   - Base VFIO support for KVM on power by Alexey Kardashevskiy

and recovery) infrastructure. It is no longer specific to pseries
but is now usable by the new "powernv" platform as well (no
     hypervisor) by Gavin Shan.

   - I fixed some bugs in our math-emu instruction decoding and made it
usable to emulate some optional FP instructions on processors with
hard FP that lack them (such as fsqrt on Freescale embedded
     processors).

   - Support for Power8 "Event Based Branch" facility by Michael
Ellerman. This facility allows what is basically "userspace
     interrupts" for performance monitor events.

   - A bunch of Transactional Memory vs. Signals bug fixes and HW

8e48b1a8ed pstore: Return unique error if backend registration excluded by kernel param
This is patch 1/3 of a patch set that avoids what misleadingly appears
to be a error during boot:

ERST: Could not register with persistent store

This message is displayed if the system has a valid ACPI ERST table and the
pstore.backend kernel parameter has been used to disable use of ERST by
pstore. But this same message is used for errors that preclude registration.

As part of fixing this, return a unique error status from pstore_register
if the pstore.backend kernel parameter selects a specific facility other
than the requesting facility and check for this condition before any others.
This allows the caller to distinquish this benign case from the other failure
cases.

Also, print an informational console message about which facility
successfully registered as the pstore backend. Since there are various
kernel parameters, config build options, and boot-time errors that can
influence which facility registers with pstore, it's useful to have a
positive indication.

fb0af3f2b1 pstore: Create a convenient mount point for pstore
Using /dev/pstore as a mount point for the pstore filesystem is slightly
awkward. We don't normally mount filesystems in /dev/ and the /dev/pstore
file isn't created automatically by anything. While this method will
still work, we can create a persistent mount point in sysfs. This will
put pstore on par with things like cgroups and efivarfs.

9f244e9cfd pstore: Avoid deadlock in panic and emergency-restart path
[Issue]

When pstore is in panic and emergency-restart paths, it may be blocked
in those paths because it simply takes spin_lock.

This is an example scenario which pstore may hang up in a panic path:

 - cpuA grabs psinfo->buf_lock
 - cpuB panics and calls smp_send_stop
 - smp_send_stop sends IRQ to cpuA
 - after 1 second, cpuB gives up on cpuA and sends an NMI instead
 - cpuA is now in an NMI handler while still holding buf_lock
 - cpuB is deadlocked

This case may happen if a firmware has a bug and
cpuA is stuck talking with it more than one second.

Also, this is a similar scenario in an emergency-restart path:

 - cpuA grabs psinfo->buf_lock and stucks in a firmware
 - cpuB kicks emergency-restart via either sysrq-b or hangcheck timer.
And then, cpuB is deadlocked by taking psinfo->buf_lock again.

[Solution]

This patch avoids the deadlocking issues in both panic and emergency_restart
paths by introducing a function, is_non_blocking_path(), to check if a cpu
can be blocked in current path.

With this patch, pstore is not blocked even if another cpu has
taken a spin_lock, in those paths by changing from spin_lock_irqsave
to spin_trylock_irqsave.

In addition, according to a comment of emergency_restart() in kernel/sys.c,
spin_lock shouldn't be taken in an emergency_restart path to avoid
deadlock. This patch fits the comment below.

<snip>
/**

755d4fe465 efi_pstore: Add a sequence counter to a variable name
[Issue]

Currently, a variable name, which identifies each entry, consists of type, id and ctime.
But if multiple events happens in a short time, a second/third event may fail to log because
efi_pstore can't distinguish each event with current variable name.

[Solution]

A reasonable way to identify all events precisely is introducing a sequence counter to
the variable name.

The sequence counter has already supported in a pstore layer with "oopscount".
So, this patch adds it to a variable name.
Also, it is passed to read/erase callbacks of platform drivers in accordance with
the modification of the variable name.

  <before applying this patch>
a variable name of first event: dump-type0-1-12345678
a variable name of second event: dump-type0-1-12345678

  type:0
  id:1
  ctime:12345678

If multiple events happen in a short time, efi_pstore can't distinguish them because
variable names are same among them.

  <after applying this patch>

it can be distinguishable by adding a sequence counter as follows.

a variable name of first event: dump-type0-1-1-12345678
a variable name of Second event: dump-type0-1-2-12345678

  type:0
  id:1
sequence counter: 1(first event), 2(second event)
  ctime:12345678

In case of a write callback executed in pstore_console_write(), "0" is added to
an argument of the write callback because it just logs all kernel messages and
doesn't need to care about multiple events.

a9efd39cd5 efi_pstore: Add ctime to argument of erase callback
[Issue]

Currently, a variable name, which is used to identify each log entry, consists of type,
id and ctime. But an erase callback does not use ctime.

If efi_pstore supported just one log, type and id were enough.
However, in case of supporting multiple logs, it doesn't work because
it can't distinguish each entry without ctime at erasing time.

 <Example>

As you can see below, efi_pstore can't differentiate first event from second one without ctime.

a variable name of first event: dump-type0-1-12345678
a variable name of second event: dump-type0-1-23456789

  type:0
  id:1
  ctime:12345678, 23456789

[Solution]

This patch adds ctime to an argument of an erase callback.

It works across reboots because ctime of pstore means the date that the record was originally stored.
To do this, efi_pstore saves the ctime to variable name at writing time and passes it to pstore
at reading time.

65f8c95e46 pstore/ftrace: Convert to its own enable/disable debugfs knob
With this patch we no longer reuse function tracer infrastructure, now
we register our own tracer back-end via a debugfs knob.

It's a bit more code, but that is the only downside. On the bright side we
have:

- Ability to make persistent_ram module removable (when needed, we can
move ftrace_ops struct into a module). Note that persistent_ram is still
not removable for other reasons, but with this patch it's just one
  thing less to worry about;

- Pstore part is more isolated from the generic function tracer. We tried
it already by registering our own tracer in available_tracers, but that
way we're loosing ability to see the traces while we record them to
pstore. This solution is somewhere in the middle: we only register
  "internal ftracer" back-end, but not the "front-end";

- When there is only pstore tracing enabled, the kernel will only write
to the pstore buffer, omitting function tracer buffer (which, of course,
still can be enabled via 'echo function > current_tracer').

a384f64117 pstore/ram: Fix possible NULL dereference
We can dereference 'cxt->cprz' if console and dump logging are disabled
(which is unlikely, but still possible to do). This patch fixes the issue
by changing the code so that we don't dereference przs at all, we can
just calculate bufsize from console_size and record_size values.

Plus, while at it, the patch improves the buffer size calculation.

After Kay's printk rework, we know the optimal buffer size for console
logging -- it is LOG_LINE_MAX (defined privately in printk.c). Previously,
if only console logging was enabled, we would allocate unnecessary large
buffer in pstore, while we only need LOG_LINE_MAX. (Pstore console logging
is still capable of handling buffers > LOG_LINE_MAX, it will just do
multiple calls to psinfo->write).

Note that I don't export the constant, since we will do even a better
thing soon: we will switch console logging to a new write_buf API, which
will eliminate the need for the additional buffer; and so we won't need
the constant.

cbe7cbf5a6 pstore/ram: Make tracing log versioned
Decoding the binary trace w/ a different kernel might be troublesome
since we convert addresses to symbols. For kernels with minimal changes,
the mappings would probably match, but it's not guaranteed at all.
(But still we could convert the addresses by hand, since we do print
raw addresses.)

If we use modules, the symbols could be loaded at different addresses
from the previously booted kernel, and so this would also fail, but
there's nothing we can do about it.

Also, the binary data format that pstore/ram is using in its ringbuffer
may change between the kernels, so here we too must ensure that we're
running the same kernel.

So, there are two questions really:

1. How to compute the unique kernel tag;
2. Where to store it.

In this patch we're using LINUX_VERSION_CODE, just as hibernation
(suspend-to-disk) does. This way we are protecting from the kernel
version mismatch, making sure that we're running the same kernel
version and patch level. We could use CRC of a symbol table (as
suggested by Tony Luck), but for now let's not be that strict.

And as for storing, we are using a small trick here. Instead of
allocating a dedicated buffer for the tag (i.e. another prz), or
hacking ram_core routines to "reserve" some control data in the
buffer, we are just encoding the tag into the buffer signature
(and XOR'ing it with the actual signature value, so that buffers
not needing a tag can just pass zero, which will result into the
plain old PRZ signature).

5ca5d4e61d pstore/ram: Make ECC size configurable
This is now pretty straightforward: instead of using bool, just pass
an integer. For backwards compatibility ramoops.ecc=1 means 16 bytes
ECC (using 1 byte for ECC isn't much of use anyway).

The struct members were never used anywhere outside of
persistent_ram_init_ecc(), so there's actually no need for them
to be in the struct.

If we ever want to make polynomial or symbol size configurable,
it would make more sense to just pass initialized rs_decoder
to the persistent_ram init functions.

924d37118f pstore/ram: Probe as early as possible
Registering the platform driver before module_init allows us to log oopses
that happen during device probing.

This requires changing module_init to postcore_initcall, and switching
from platform_driver_probe to platform_driver_register because the
platform device is not registered when the platform driver is registered;
and because we use driver_register, now can't use create_bundle() (since
it will try to register the same driver once again), so we have to switch
to platform_device_register_data().

Also, some __init -> __devinit changes were needed.

Overall, the registration logic is now much clearer, since we have only
one driver registration point, and just an optional dummy device, which
is created from the module parameters.

e2ae715d66 kmsg - kmsg_dump() use iterator to receive log buffer content
Provide an iterator to receive the log buffer content, and convert all
kmsg_dump() users to it.

The structured data in the kmsg buffer now contains binary data, which
should no longer be copied verbatim to the kmsg_dump() users.

The iterator should provide reliable access to the buffer data, and also
supports proper log line-aware chunking of data while iterating.

521f7288a8 pstore/platform: Disable automatic updates by default
Having automatic updates seems pointless for production system, and
even dangerous and thus counter-productive:

1. If we can mount pstore, or read files, we can as well read
/proc/kmsg. So, there's little point in duplicating the
functionality and present the same information but via another
   userland ABI;

2. Expecting the kernel to behave sanely after oops/panic is naive.
It might work, but you'd rather not try it. Screwed up kernel
can do rather bad things, like recursive faults[1]; and pstore
rather provoking bad things to happen. It uses:

   1. Timers (assumes sane interrupts state);
   2. Workqueues and mutexes (assumes scheduler in a sane state);
   3. kzalloc (a working slab allocator);

That's too much for a dead kernel, so the debugging facility
itself might just make debugging harder, which is not what
   we want.

Maybe for non-oops message types it would make sense to re-enable
automatic updates, but so far I don't see any use case for this.
Even for tracing, it has its own run-time/normal ABI, so we're
only interested in pstore upon next boot, to retrieve what has
gone wrong with HW or SW.

So, let's disable the updates by default.

1894a253db ramoops: Move to fs/pstore/ram.c
Since ramoops was converted to pstore, it has nothing to do with character
devices nowadays. Instead, today it is just a RAM backend for pstore.

The patch just moves things around. There are a few changes were needed
because of the move:

1. Kconfig and Makefiles fixups, of course.

2. In pstore/ram.c we have to play a bit with MODULE_PARAM_PREFIX, this
is needed to keep user experience the same as with ramoops driver
(i.e. so that ramoops.foo kernel command line arguments would still
   work).

234e340582 simple_open: automatically convert to simple_open()
Many users of debugfs copy the implementation of default_open() when
they want to support a custom read/write function op. This leads to a
proliferation of the default_open() implementation across the entire

Now that the common implementation has been consolidated into libfs we
can replace all the users of this function with simple_open().

This replacement was done with the following semantic patch:

381b872cf7 pstore: Introduce get_reason_str() to pstore
Recently, there has been some changes in kmsg_dump() below and they have been applied to linus-tree.
 (1) kmsg_dump(KMSG_DUMP_KEXEC) was removed.
     http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=commitdiff;h=a3dd3323058d281abd584b15ad4c5b65064d7a61

 (2) The order of "enum kmsg_dump_reason" was modified.
     http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=commitdiff;h=c22ab332902333f83766017478c1ef6607ace681

3d6d8d20ec pstore: pass reason to backend write callback
This allows a backend to filter on the dmesg reason as well as the pstore

no interest in storing non-crash dmesg details.

Drop pstore_write() as it has no users, and handling the "reason" here

f6f8285132 pstore: pass allocated memory region back to caller
The buf_lock cannot be held while populating the inodes, so make the backend
pass forward an allocated and filled buffer instead. This solves the following
backtrace. The effect is that "buf" is only ever used to notify the backends
that something was written to it, and shouldn't be used in the read path.

To replace the buf_lock during the read path, isolate the open/read/close
loop with a separate mutex to maintain serialized access to the backend.

Note that is is up to the pstore backend to cope if the (*write)() path is
called in the middle of the read path.

abd4d5587b pstore: change mutex locking to spin_locks
pstore was using mutex locking to protect read/write access to the
backend plug-ins. This causes problems when pstore is executed in
an NMI context through panic() -> kmsg_dump().

This patch changes the mutex to a spin_lock_irqsave then also checks to
see if we are in an NMI context. If we are in an NMI and can't get the
lock, just print a message stating that and blow by the locking.

All this is probably a hack around the bigger locking problem but it
solves my current situation of trying to sleep in an NMI context.

Tested by loading the lkdtm module and executing a HARDLOCKUP which
will cause the machine to panic inside the nmi handler.

6dda926691 pstore: defer inserting OOPS entries into pstore
Life is simple for all the kernel terminating types of kmsg_dump
call backs - pstore just saves the tail end of the console log. But
for "oops" the situation is more complex - the kernel may carry on
running (possibly for ever). So we'd like to make the logged copy
of the oops appear in the pstore filesystem - so that the user has
a handle to clear the entry from the persistent backing store (if
we don't, the store may fill with "oops" entries (that are also
safely stashed in /var/log/messages) leaving no space for real
errors.

Current code calls pstore_mkfile() immediately. But this may
not be safe. The oops could have happened with arbitrary locks
held, or in interrupt or NMI context. So allocating memory and
calling into generic filesystem code seems unwise.

This patch defers making the entry appear. At the time
of the oops, we merely set a flag "pstore_new_entry" noting that
a new entry has been added. A periodic timer checks once a minute
to see if the flag is set - if so, it schedules a work queue to
rescan the backing store and make all new entries appear in the
pstore filesystem.
