"Features:
- Support passing NULL along AT_EMPTY_PATH for statx().
NULL paths with any flag value other than AT_EMPTY_PATH go the
usual route and end up with -EFAULT to retain compatibility (Rust
is abusing calls of the sort to detect availability of statx)
This avoids path lookup code, lockref management, memory allocation
and in case of NULL path userspace memory access (which can be
quite expensive with SMAP on x86_64)
- Don't block i_writecount during exec. Remove the
deny_write_access() mechanism for executables
- Relax open_by_handle_at() permissions in specific cases where we
can prove that the caller had sufficient privileges to open a file
- Switch timespec64 fields in struct inode to discrete integers
freeing up 4 bytes
Fixes:
- Fix false positive circular locking warning in hfsplus
- Initialize hfs_inode_info after hfs_alloc_inode() in hfs
- Avoid accidental overflows in vfs_fallocate()
- Don't interrupt fallocate with EINTR in tmpfs to avoid constantly
restarting shmem_fallocate()
- Add missing quote in comment in fs/readdir
Cleanups:
- Don't assign and test in an if statement in mqueue. Move the
assignment out of the if statement
- Reflow the logic in may_create_in_sticky()
- Remove the usage of the deprecated ida_simple_xx() API from procfs
- Reject FSCONFIG_CMD_CREATE_EXCL requets that depend on the new
mount api early
- Rename variables in copy_tree() to make it easier to understand
- Replace WARN(down_read_trylock, ...) abuse with proper asserts in
various places in the VFS
- Get rid of user_path_at_empty() and drop the empty argument from
getname_flags()
- Check for error while copying and no path in one branch in
getname_flags()
- Avoid redundant smp_mb() for THP handling in do_dentry_open()
- Rename parent_ino to d_parent_ino and make it use RCU
- Remove unused header include in fs/readdir

it instead of open-coding the logic in both places"

strncpy() is deprecated with NUL-terminated destination strings [1].
The copy_name() method does a lot of manual buffer manipulation to
eventually arrive with its desired string. If we don't know the
namespace this attr has or belongs to we want to prepend "osx." to our
final string. Following this, we're copying xattr_name and doing a
bizarre manual NUL-byte assignment with a memset where n=1.
Really, we can use some more obvious string APIs to acomplish this,
improving readability and security. Following the same control flow as
before: if we don't know the namespace let's use scnprintf() to form our
prefix + xattr_name pairing (while NUL-terminating too!). Otherwise, use
strscpy() to return the number of bytes copied into our buffer.
Additionally, for non-empty strings, include the NUL-byte in the length
-- matching the behavior of the previous implementation.
Note that strscpy() _can_ return -E2BIG but this is already handled by
all callsites:
In both hfsplus_listxattr_finder_info() and hfsplus_listxattr(), ret is
already type ssize_t so we can change the return type of copy_name() to
match (understanding that scnprintf()'s return type is different yet
fully representable by ssize_t). Furthermore, listxattr() in fs/xattr.c
is well-equipped to handle a potential -E2BIG return result from
vfs_listxattr():
| ssize_t error;
...
| error = vfs_listxattr(d, klist, size);
| if (error > 0) {
| if (size && copy_to_user(list, klist, error))
| error = -EFAULT;
| } else if (error == -ERANGE && size >= XATTR_LIST_MAX) {
| /* The file system tried to returned a list bigger
| than XATTR_LIST_MAX bytes. Not possible. */
| error = -E2BIG;
| }
... the error can potentially already be -E2BIG, skipping this else-if
and ending up at the same state as other errors.

Merge tag 'vfs-6.9.misc' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs
Pull misc vfs updates from Christian Brauner:
"Misc features, cleanups, and fixes for vfs and individual filesystems.
Features:
- Support idmapped mounts for hugetlbfs.
- Add RWF_NOAPPEND flag for pwritev2(). This allows us to fix a bug
where the passed offset is ignored if the file is O_APPEND. The new
flag allows a caller to enforce that the offset is honored to
conform to posix even if the file was opened in append mode.
- Move i_mmap_rwsem in struct address_space to avoid false sharing
between i_mmap and i_mmap_rwsem.
- Convert efs, qnx4, and coda to use the new mount api.
- Add a generic is_dot_dotdot() helper that's used by various
filesystems and the VFS code instead of open-coding it multiple
times.
- Recently we've added stable offsets which allows stable ordering
when iterating directories exported through NFS on e.g., tmpfs
filesystems. Originally an xarray was used for the offset map but
that caused slab fragmentation issues over time. This switches the
offset map to the maple tree which has a dense mode that handles
this scenario a lot better. Includes tests.
- Finally merge the case-insensitive improvement series Gabriel has
been working on for a long time. This cleanly propagates case
insensitive operations through ->s_d_op which in turn allows us to
remove the quite ugly generic_set_encrypted_ci_d_ops() operations.
It also improves performance by trying a case-sensitive comparison
first and then fallback to case-insensitive lookup if that fails.
This also fixes a bug where overlayfs would be able to be mounted
over a case insensitive directory which would lead to all sort of
odd behaviors.
Cleanups:
- Make file_dentry() a simple accessor now that ->d_real() is
simplified because of the backing file work we did the last two
cycles.
- Use the dedicated file_mnt_idmap helper in ntfs3.
- Use smp_load_acquire/store_release() in the i_size_read/write
helpers and thus remove the hack to handle i_size reads in the
filemap code.
- The SLAB_MEM_SPREAD is a nop now. Remove it from various places in
fs/
- It's no longer necessary to perform a second built-in initramfs
unpack call because we retain the contents of the previous
extraction. Remove it.
- Now that we have removed various allocators kfree_rcu() always
works with kmem caches and kmalloc(). So simplify various places
that only use an rcu callback in order to handle the kmem cache
case.
- Convert the pipe code to use a lockdep comparison function instead
of open-coding the nesting making lockdep validation easier.
- Move code into fs-writeback.c that was located in a header but can
be made static as it's only used in that one file.
- Rewrite the alignment checking iterators for iovec and bvec to be
easier to read, and also significantly more compact in terms of
generated code. This saves 270 bytes of text on x86-64 (with
clang-18) and 224 bytes on arm64 (with gcc-13). In profiles it also
saves a bit of time for the same workload.
- Switch various places to use KMEM_CACHE instead of
kmem_cache_create().
- Use inode_set_ctime_to_ts() in inode_set_ctime_current()
- Use kzalloc() in name_to_handle_at() to avoid kernel infoleak.
- Various smaller cleanups for eventfds.
Fixes:
- Fix various comments and typos, and unneeded initializations.
- Fix stack allocation hack for clang in the select code.
- Improve dump_mapping() debug code on a best-effort basis.
- Fix build errors in various selftests.
- Avoid wrap-around instrumentation in various places.
- Don't allow user namespaces without an idmapping to be used for
idmapped mounts.
- Fix sysv sb_read() call.
- Fix fallback implementation of the get_name() export operation"

generic_fillattr just fills in the entire stat struct indiscriminately
today, copying data from the inode. There is at least one attribute
(STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE) that can have side effects when it is reported,
and we're looking at adding more with the addition of multigrain
timestamps.
Add a request_mask argument to generic_fillattr and have most callers
just pass in the value that is passed to getattr. Have other callers
(e.g. ksmbd) just pass in STATX_BASIC_STATS. Also move the setting of
STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE into generic_fillattr.

Add a new config option that controls building the buffer_head code, and
select it from all file systems and stacking drivers that need it.
For the block device nodes and alternative iomap based buffered I/O path
is provided when buffer_head support is not enabled, and iomap needs a
a small tweak to define the IOMAP_F_BUFFER_HEAD flag to 0 to not call
into the buffer_head code when it doesn't exist.
Otherwise this is just Kconfig and ifdef changes.

The current hfsplus_put_super first calls hfs_btree_close on
sbi->ext_tree, then invokes iput on sbi->hidden_dir, resulting in an
use-after-free issue in hfsplus_release_folio.
As shown in hfsplus_fill_super, the error handling code also calls iput
before hfs_btree_close.
To fix this error, we move all iput calls before hfsplus_btree_close.
Note that this patch is tested on Syzbot.

Convert to struct mnt_idmap.
Last cycle we merged the necessary infrastructure in
256c8aed2b ("fs: introduce dedicated idmap type for mounts").
This is just the conversion to struct mnt_idmap.
Currently we still pass around the plain namespace that was attached to a
mount. This is in general pretty convenient but it makes it easy to
conflate namespaces that are relevant on the filesystem with namespaces
that are relevent on the mount level. Especially for non-vfs developers
without detailed knowledge in this area this can be a potential source for
bugs.
Once the conversion to struct mnt_idmap is done all helpers down to the
really low-level helpers will take a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of
two namespace arguments. This way it becomes impossible to conflate the two
eliminating the possibility of any bugs. All of the vfs and all filesystems
only operate on struct mnt_idmap.

really low-level helpers will take a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of
two namespace arguments. This way it becomes impossible to conflate the two
eliminating the possibility of any bugs. All of the vfs and all filesystems
only operate on struct mnt_idmap.

Especially for non-vfs developers
without detailed knowledge in this area this can be a potential source for
bugs.

kmap() is being deprecated in favor of kmap_local_page().
There are two main problems with kmap(): (1) It comes with an overhead as
mapping space is restricted and protected by a global lock for
synchronization and (2) it also requires global TLB invalidation when the
kmap's pool wraps and it might block when the mapping space is fully
utilized until a slot becomes available.
With kmap_local_page() the mappings are per thread, CPU local, can take
page faults, and can be called from any context (including interrupts).
It is faster than kmap() in kernels with HIGHMEM enabled. Furthermore,
the tasks can be preempted and, when they are scheduled to run again, the
kernel virtual addresses are restored and are still valid.
Since its use in btree.c is safe everywhere, it should be preferred.
Therefore, replace kmap() with kmap_local_page() in btree.c.
Tested in a QEMU/KVM x86_32 VM, 6GB RAM, booting a kernel with
HIGHMEM64GB enabled.

Therefore, replace kmap() with kmap_local_page() in fs/hfsplus. Where
possible, use the suited standard helpers (memzero_page(), memcpy_page())
instead of open coding kmap_local_page() plus memset() or memcpy().
Fix a bug due to a page being not unmapped if the code jumps to the
"fail_page" label (1/4).
Tested in a QEMU/KVM x86_32 VM, 6GB RAM, booting a kernel with
HIGHMEM64GB enabled.
This patch (of 4):
Several paths within hfs_btree_open() jump to the "fail_page" label where
put_page() is called while the page is still mapped.
Call kunmap() to unmap the page soon before put_page().
