mm, arch: add generic implementation of pfn_valid() for FLATMEM
Every architecture that supports FLATMEM memory model defines its own version of pfn_valid() that essentially compares a pfn to max_mapnr. openrisc/mm: support __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SWP_EXCLUSIVE
Let's support __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SWP_EXCLUSIVE by stealing one bit from the type. Generic MM currently only uses 5 bits for the type (MAX_SWAPFILES_SHIFT), so the stolen bit is effectively unused. While at it, mask the type in __swp_entry(). arch/idle: Change arch_cpu_idle() behavior: always exit with IRQs disabled
Current arch_cpu_idle() is called with IRQs disabled, but will return with IRQs enabled. However, the very first thing the generic code does after calling arch_cpu_idle() is raw_local_irq_disable(). This means that architectures that can idle with IRQs disabled end up doing a pointless 'enable-disable' dance. Therefore, push this IRQ disabling into the idle function, meaning that those architectures can avoid the pointless IRQ state flipping. mm, slob: rename CONFIG_SLOB to CONFIG_SLOB_DEPRECATED
As explained in [1], we would like to remove SLOB if possible. - There are no known users that need its somewhat lower memory footprint so much that they cannot handle SLUB (after some modifications by the previous patches) instead. - It is an extra maintenance burden, and a number of features are incompatible with it. - It blocks the API improvement of allowing kfree() on objects allocated via kmem_cache_alloc(). As the first step, rename the CONFIG_SLOB option in the slab allocator configuration choice to CONFIG_SLOB_DEPRECATED. Add CONFIG_SLOB depending on CONFIG_SLOB_DEPRECATED as an internal option to avoid code churn. This will cause existing .config files and defconfigs with CONFIG_SLOB=y to silently switch to the default (and recommended replacement) SLUB, while still allowing SLOB to be configured by anyone that notices and needs it. But those should contact the slab maintainers and linux-mm@kvack.org as explained in the updated help. With no valid objections, the plan is to update the existing defconfigs to SLUB and remove SLOB in a few cycles. To make SLUB more suitable replacement for SLOB, a CONFIG_SLUB_TINY option was introduced to limit SLUB's memory overhead. There is a number of defconfigs specifying CONFIG_SLOB=y. As part of this patch, update them to select CONFIG_SLUB and CONFIG_SLUB_TINY. mm: remove kern_addr_valid() completely
Most architectures (except arm64/x86/sparc) simply return 1 for kern_addr_valid(), which is only used in read_kcore(), and it calls copy_from_kernel_nofault() which could check whether the address is a valid kernel address. So as there is no need for kern_addr_valid(), let's remove it. kbuild: remove head-y syntax
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the head
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The fix was suggested by Nathan Chancellor [1]. profile: setup_profiling_timer() is moslty not implemented
The setup_profiling_timer() is mostly un-implemented by many architectures. In many places it isn't guarded by CONFIG_PROFILE which is needed for it to be used. Make it a weak symbol in kernel/profile.c and remove the 'return -EINVAL' implementations from the kenrel. There are a couple of architectures which do return 0 from the setup_profiling_timer() function but they don't seem to do anything else with it. To keep the /proc compatibility for now, leave these for a future update or removal. On ARM, this fixes the following sparse warning: arch/arm/kernel/smp.c:793:5: warning: symbol 'setup_profiling_timer' was not declared. Should it be static? I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. asm-generic changes for 5.19
The asm-generic tree contains three separate changes for linux-5.19: - The h8300 architecture is retired after it has been effectively unmaintained for a number of years. This is the last architecture we supported that has no MMU implementation, but there are still a few architectures (arm, m68k, riscv, sh and xtensa) that support CPUs with and without an MMU. - A series to add a generic ticket spinlock that can be shared by most architectures with a working cmpxchg or ll/sc type atomic, including the conversion of riscv, csky and openrisc. This series is also a prerequisite for the loongarch64 architecture port that will come as a separate pull request. - A cleanup of some exported uapi header files to ensure they can be included from user space without relying on other kernel headers. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmKPlXoACgkQmmx57+YA GNkxrRAAnuSgOUo9JC5C4Gm2Q9yhEUHU1QIYeVO0jlan5CkF18bo1Loptq4MdQtO /0pXJPH8rFhDSJQLetO4AAjEMDfJGR5ibmf7SasO03HjqC9++fIeN047MbnkHAwY hFqIkgqn4l+g1RMWK5WUSDJ3XQ7p5/yWzpg/CuxJ+D0w9by/LWI5A+2NKGXOS3GF yi7cWvIKC1l+PmrH3BFA+JYVTvFzlr9P6x5pSEBi6HmjGQR+Xn3s0bnIf6DGRZ+B Q6v03kMxtcqI9e9C0r0r7ZGbdMuRTYbGrksa4EfK0yJM9P0HchhTtT9zawAK7Ddv VMM4B+9r60UEM++hOLS6XrLJdn+Fv+OJDnhONb5c+Mndd8cwV1JbOlVbUlGkn92e WSdUCW6m0TBzDs9Ae1++1kUl1LodlcmSzxlb0ueAhU01QacCPlneyIEKUhcrCl5w ITVw4YVa/BVCh+HvTEdhhak/Qb/nWiojMY+UIH5smiwj6FSFdwEmmgCgHAKprQaA STMxRnccFknGW9CZheoMATYsPIHQKPlm9lbiulSoMLDHxGwshU/6vKD4HDoZU51d HPmUZeKVPahXCUXB4iFI3qD4Ltxaru9VbgfUiY18VB2oc6Mk+0oeh6luqwsrgBdz P2sQ2riZKhN5Frm3DCh7IbJqoqKHlLMWh0itpNllgP5SDmDJjng= =ri2Q -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-5.19' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "The asm-generic tree contains three separate changes for linux-5.19: - The h8300 architecture is retired after it has been effectively unmaintained for a number of years. openrisc: Allow power off handler overriding
The OpenRISC platform always defines a default pm_power_off hanlder which is only useful for simulators. Having this set also means power management drivers like syscon-power are not able to wire in their own pm_power_off handlers. Fix this by not setting the pm_power_off handler by default and fallback to the simulator power off handler if no handler is set. random: handle latent entropy and command line from random_init()
Currently, start_kernel() adds latent entropy and the command line to the entropy bool *after* the RNG has been initialized, deferring when it's actually used by things like stack canaries until the next time the pool is seeded. This surely is not intended. Rather than splitting up which entropy gets added where and when between start_kernel() and random_init(), just do everything in random_init(), which should eliminate these kinds of bugs in the future. This set of changes removes tracehook.h, moves modification of all of the ptrace fields inside of siglock to remove races, adds a missing permission check to ptrace.c The removal of tracehook.h is quite significant as it has been a major source of confusion in recent years. Much of that confusion was around task_work and TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL (which I have now decoupled making the semantics clearer). For people who don't know tracehook.h is a vestiage of an attempt to implement uprobes like functionality that was never fully merged, and was later superseeded by uprobes when uprobes was merged. For many years now we have been removing what tracehook functionaly a little bit at a time. To the point where now anything left in tracehook.h is some weird strange thing that is difficult to understand. Eric W. Biederman (15): ptrace: Move ptrace_report_syscall into ptrace.h ptrace/arm: Rename tracehook_report_syscall report_syscall ptrace: Create ptrace_report_syscall_{entry,exit} in ptrace.h ptrace: Remove arch_syscall_{enter,exit}_tracehook ptrace: Remove tracehook_signal_handler task_work: Remove unnecessary include from posix_timers.h task_work: Introduce task_work_pending task_work: Call tracehook_notify_signal from get_signal on all architectures task_work: Decouple TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL and task_work signal: Move set_notify_signal and clear_notify_signal into sched/signal.h resume_user_mode: Remove #ifdef TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME in set_notify_resume resume_user_mode: Move to resume_user_mode.h tracehook: Remove tracehook.h ptrace: Move setting/clearing ptrace_message into ptrace_stop ptrace: Return the signal to continue with from ptrace_stop Jann Horn (1): ptrace: Check PTRACE_O_SUSPEND_SECCOMP permission on PTRACE_SEIZE Yang Li (1): ptrace: Remove duplicated include in ptrace.c MAINTAINERS | 1 - arch/Kconfig | 5 +- arch/alpha/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/alpha/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/arc/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/arc/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/arm/kernel/ptrace.c | 12 +- arch/arm/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/arm64/kernel/ptrace.c | 14 +-- arch/arm64/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/csky/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/csky/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/h8300/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/h8300/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/hexagon/kernel/process.c | 4 +- arch/hexagon/kernel/signal.c | 1 - arch/hexagon/kernel/traps.c | 6 +- arch/ia64/kernel/process.c | 4 +- arch/ia64/kernel/ptrace.c | 6 +- arch/ia64/kernel/signal.c | 1 - arch/m68k/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/m68k/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/microblaze/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/microblaze/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/mips/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/mips/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/nds32/include/asm/syscall.h | 2 +- arch/nds32/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/nds32/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/nios2/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/nios2/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/openrisc/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/openrisc/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/parisc/kernel/ptrace.c | 7 +- arch/parisc/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/powerpc/kernel/ptrace/ptrace.c | 8 +- arch/powerpc/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/riscv/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/riscv/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- arch/s390/include/asm/entry-common.h | 1 - arch/s390/kernel/ptrace.c | 1 - arch/s390/kernel/signal.c | 5 +- arch/sh/kernel/ptrace_32.c | 5 +- arch/sh/kernel/signal_32.c | 4 +- arch/sparc/kernel/ptrace_32.c | 5 +- arch/sparc/kernel/ptrace_64.c | 5 +- arch/sparc/kernel/signal32.c | 1 - arch/sparc/kernel/signal_32.c | 4 +- arch/sparc/kernel/signal_64.c | 4 +- arch/um/kernel/process.c | 4 +- arch/um/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/x86/kernel/ptrace.c | 1 - arch/x86/kernel/signal.c | 5 +- arch/x86/mm/tlb.c | 1 + arch/xtensa/kernel/ptrace.c | 5 +- arch/xtensa/kernel/signal.c | 4 +- block/blk-cgroup.c | 2 +- fs/coredump.c | 1 - fs/exec.c | 1 - fs/io-wq.c | 6 +- fs/io_uring.c | 11 +- fs/proc/array.c | 1 - fs/proc/base.c | 1 - include/asm-generic/syscall.h | 2 +- include/linux/entry-common.h | 47 +------- include/linux/entry-kvm.h | 2 +- include/linux/posix-timers.h | 1 - include/linux/ptrace.h | 81 ++++++++++++- include/linux/resume_user_mode.h | 64 ++++++++++ include/linux/sched/signal.h | 17 +++ include/linux/task_work.h | 5 + include/linux/tracehook.h | 226 ----------------------------------- include/uapi/linux/ptrace.h | 2 +- kernel/entry/common.c | 19 +-- kernel/entry/kvm.c | 9 +- kernel/exit.c | 3 +- kernel/livepatch/transition.c | 1 - kernel/ptrace.c | 47 +++++--- kernel/seccomp.c | 1 - kernel/signal.c | 62 +++++----- kernel/task_work.c | 4 +- kernel/time/posix-cpu-timers.c | 1 + mm/memcontrol.c | 2 +- security/apparmor/domain.c | 1 - security/selinux/hooks.c | 1 - 85 files changed, 372 insertions(+), 495 deletions(-) Signed-off-by: "Eric W. asm-generic updates for 5.18
There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. This was already gone from all major architectures, but now we can finally remove it everywhere, which loses some particularly tricky and error-prone code. There is a small merge conflict against a parisc cleanup, the solution is to use their new version. - The nds32 architecture ends its tenure in the Linux kernel. The hardware is still used and the code is in reasonable shape, but the mainline port is not actively maintained any more, as all remaining users are thought to run vendor kernels that would never be updated to a future release. There are some obvious conflicts against changes to the removed files. - A series from Masahiro Yamada cleans up some of the uapi header files to pass the compile-time checks. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmI69BsACgkQmmx57+YA GNn/zA//f4d5VTT0ThhRxRWTu9BdThGHoB8TUcY7iOhbsWu0X/913NItRC3UeWNl IdmisaXgVtirg1dcC2pWUmrcHdoWOCEGfK4+Zr2NhSWfuZDWvODHK9pGWk4WLnhe cQgUNBvIuuAMryGtrOBwHPO4TpfCyy2ioeVP36ZfcsWXdDxTrqfaq/56mk3sxIP6 sUTk1UEjut9NG4C9xIIvcSU50R3l6LryQE/H9kyTLtaSvfvTOvprcVYCq0GPmSzo DtQ1Wwa9zbJ+4EqoMiP5RrgQwWvOTg2iRByLU8ytwlX3e/SEF0uihvMv1FQbL8zG G8RhGUOKQSEhaBfc3lIkm8GpOVPh0uHzB6zhn7daVmAWtazRD2Nu59BMjipa+ims a8Z58iHH7jRAnKeEkVZqXKb1CEiUxaQx/IeVPzN4QlwMhDtwrI76LY7ZJ1zCqTGY ENG0yRLav1XselYBslOYXGtOEWcY5EZPWqLyWbp4P9vz2g0Fe0gZxoIOvPmNQc89 QnfXpCt7vm/DGkyO255myu08GOLeMkisVqUIzLDB9avlym5mri7T7vk9abBa2YyO CRpTL5gl1/qKPWuH1UI5mvhT+sbbBE2SUHSuy84btns39ZKKKynwCtdu+hSQkKLE h9pV30Gf1cLTD4JAE0RWlUgOmbBLVp34loTOexQj4MrLM1noOnw= =vtCN -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-5.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. uaccess: remove CONFIG_SET_FS
There are no remaining callers of set_fs(), so CONFIG_SET_FS can be removed globally, along with the thread_info field and any references to it. This turns access_ok() into a cheaper check against TASK_SIZE_MAX. As CONFIG_SET_FS is now gone, drop all remaining references to set_fs()/get_fs(), mm_segment_t, user_addr_max() and uaccess_kernel(). uaccess: generalize access_ok()
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. Merge branch 'signal-for-v5.17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull signal/exit/ptrace updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found along the way. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost. kbuild: do not quote string values in include/config/auto.conf
The previous commit fixed up all shell scripts to not include include/config/auto.conf. Now that include/config/auto.conf is only included by Makefiles, we can change it into a more Make-friendly form. Previously, Kconfig output string values enclosed with double-quotes (both in the .config and include/config/auto.conf): CONFIG_X="foo bar" Unlike shell, Make handles double-quotes (and single-quotes as well) verbatim. We must rip them off when used. There are some patterns: [1] $(patsubst "%",%,$(CONFIG_X)) [2] $(CONFIG_X:"%"=%) [3] $(subst ",,$(CONFIG_X)) [4] $(shell echo $(CONFIG_X)) These are not only ugly, but also fragile. [1] and [2] do not work if the value contains spaces, like CONFIG_X=" foo bar " [3] does not work correctly if the value contains double-quotes like CONFIG_X="foo\"bar" [4] seems to work better, but has a cost of forking a process. Anyway, quoted strings were always PITA for our Makefiles. This commit changes Kconfig to stop quoting in include/config/auto.conf. These are the string type symbols referenced in Makefiles or scripts: ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT_FILE ARC_BUILTIN_DTB_NAME ARC_TUNE_MCPU BUILTIN_DTB_SOURCE CC_IMPLICIT_FALLTHROUGH CC_VERSION_TEXT CFG80211_EXTRA_REGDB_KEYDIR EXTRA_FIRMWARE EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR EXTRA_TARGETS H8300_BUILTIN_DTB INITRAMFS_SOURCE LOCALVERSION MODULE_SIG_HASH MODULE_SIG_KEY NDS32_BUILTIN_DTB NIOS2_DTB_SOURCE OPENRISC_BUILTIN_DTB SOC_CANAAN_K210_DTB_SOURCE SYSTEM_BLACKLIST_HASH_LIST SYSTEM_REVOCATION_KEYS SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS TARGET_CPU UNUSED_KSYMS_WHITELIST XILINX_MICROBLAZE0_FAMILY XILINX_MICROBLAZE0_HW_VER XTENSA_VARIANT_NAME I checked them one by one, and fixed up the code where necessary. exit: Add and use make_task_dead.
There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit rewind_stack_and_make_dead. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com> |

openrisc: Add clone3 ABI wrapper
Like fork and clone the clone3 syscall needs a wrapper to save callee
saved registers, which is required by the OpenRISC ABI. This came up
after auditing code following a discussion with Rob Landley and Arnd
Bergmann [0].
Tested with the clone3 kselftests and there were no issues.

openrisc: Snapshot thread flags
Some thread flags can be set remotely, and so even when IRQs are disabled, the flags can change under our feet. Generally this is unlikely to cause a problem in practice, but it is somewhat unsound, and KCSAN will legitimately warn that there is a data race. To avoid such issues, a snapshot of the flags has to be taken prior to using them. Some places already use READ_ONCE() for that, others do not. Convert them all to the new flag accessor helpers. Merge branch 'exit-cleanups-for-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull exit cleanups from Eric Biederman: "While looking at some issues related to the exit path in the kernel I found several instances where the code is not using the existing abstractions properly. This set of changes introduces force_fatal_sig a way of sending a signal and not allowing it to be caught, and corrects the misuse of the existing abstractions that I found. A lot of the misuse of the existing abstractions are silly things such as doing something after calling a no return function, rolling BUG by hand, doing more work than necessary to terminate a kernel thread, or calling do_exit(SIGKILL) instead of calling force_sig(SIGKILL). In the review a deficiency in force_fatal_sig and force_sig_seccomp where ptrace or sigaction could prevent the delivery of the signal was found. I have added a change that adds SA_IMMUTABLE to change that makes it impossible to interrupt the delivery of those signals, and allows backporting to fix force_sig_seccomp And Arnd found an issue where a function passed to kthread_run had the wrong prototype, and after my cleanup was failing to build." * 'exit-cleanups-for-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: (23 commits) soc: ti: fix wkup_m3_rproc_boot_thread return type signal: Add SA_IMMUTABLE to ensure forced siganls do not get changed signal: Replace force_sigsegv(SIGSEGV) with force_fatal_sig(SIGSEGV) exit/r8188eu: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 exit/rtl8712: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 exit/rtl8723bs: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 signal/x86: In emulate_vsyscall force a signal instead of calling do_exit signal/sparc32: In setup_rt_frame and setup_fram use force_fatal_sig signal/sparc32: Exit with a fatal signal when try_to_clear_window_buffer fails exit/syscall_user_dispatch: Send ordinary signals on failure signal: Implement force_fatal_sig exit/kthread: Have kernel threads return instead of calling do_exit signal/s390: Use force_sigsegv in default_trap_handler signal/vm86_32: Properly send SIGSEGV when the vm86 state cannot be saved. signal/vm86_32: Replace open coded BUG_ON with an actual BUG_ON signal/sparc: In setup_tsb_params convert open coded BUG into BUG signal/powerpc: On swapcontext failure force SIGSEGV signal/sh: Use force_sig(SIGKILL) instead of do_group_exit(SIGKILL) signal/mips: Update (_save|_restore)_fp_context to fail with -EFAULT signal/sparc32: Remove unreachable do_exit in do_sparc_fault ... |

Locking updates:
- Move futex code into kernel/futex/ and split up the kitchen sink into seperate files to make integration of sys_futex_waitv() simpler. - Add a new sys_futex_waitv() syscall which allows to wait on multiple futexes. The main use case is emulating Windows' WaitForMultipleObjects which allows Wine to improve the performance of Windows Games. Also native Linux games can benefit from this interface as this is a common wait pattern for this kind of applications. - Add context to ww_mutex_trylock() to provide a path for i915 to rework their eviction code step by step without making lockdep upset until the final steps of rework are completed. It's also useful for regulator and TTM to avoid dropping locks in the non contended path. - Lockdep and might_sleep() cleanups and improvements - A few improvements for the RT substitutions. - The usual small improvements and cleanups. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJHBAABCgAxFiEEQp8+kY+LLUocC4bMphj1TA10mKEFAmF/FTITHHRnbHhAbGlu dXRyb25peC5kZQAKCRCmGPVMDXSYoVNZD/9vIm3Bu1Coz8tbNXz58AiCYq9Y/vp5 mzFgSzz+VJTkW5Vh8jo5Uel4rCKZyt+rL276EoaRPzYl8KFtWDbpK3qd3PrXKqTX At49JO4ttAMJUHIBQ6vblEkykmfEd9YPU1uSWk5roJ+s7Jmr5VWnu0FEWHP00As5 tWOca/TM0ei9kof26V2fl5aecTGII4i4Zsvy+LPsXtI+TnmP0gSBcGAS/5UnZTtJ vQRWTR3ojoYvh5iTmNqbaURYoQLe2j8yscn1DSW1CABWVmP12eDWs+N7jRP4b5S9 73xOv5P7vpva41wxrK2ir5iNkpsLE97VL2JOHTW8nm7orblfiuxHLTCkTjEdd2pO h8blI2IBizEB3JYn2BMkOAaZQOSjN8hd6Ye/b2B4AMEGWeXEoEv6eVy/orYKCluQ XDqGn47Vce/SYmo5vfTB8VMt6nANx8PKvOP3IvjHInYEQBgiT6QrlUw3RRkXBp5s clQkjYYwjAMVIXowcCrdhoKjMROzi6STShVwHwGL8MaZXqr8Vl6BUO9ckU0pY+4C F000Hzwxi8lGEQ9k+P+BnYOEzH5osCty8lloKiQ/7ciX6T+CZHGJPGK/iY4YL8P5 C3CJWMsHCqST7DodNFJmdfZt99UfIMmEhshMDduU9AAH0tHCn8vOu0U6WvCtpyBp BvHj68zteAtlYg== =RZ4x -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'locking-core-2021-10-31' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull locking updates from Thomas Gleixner: - Move futex code into kernel/futex/ and split up the kitchen sink into seperate files to make integration of sys_futex_waitv() simpler. - Add a new sys_futex_waitv() syscall which allows to wait on multiple futexes. locking: Remove spin_lock_flags() etc
parisc, ia64 and powerpc32 are the only remaining architectures that provide custom arch_{spin,read,write}_lock_flags() functions, which are meant to re-enable interrupts while waiting for a spinlock. However, none of these can actually run into this codepath, because it is only called on architectures without CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK, or when CONFIG_DEBUG_LOCK_ALLOC is set without CONFIG_LOCKDEP, and none of those combinations are possible on the three architectures. Going back in the git history, it appears that arch/mn10300 may have been able to run into this code path, but there is a good chance that it never worked. On the architectures that still exist, it was already impossible to hit back in 2008 after the introduction of CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK, and possibly earlier. As this is all dead code, just remove it and the helper functions built around it. For arch/ia64, the inline asm could be cleaned up, but it seems safer to leave it untouched. irq: remove handle_domain_{irq,nmi}()
Now that entry code handles IRQ entry (including setting the IRQ regs) before calling irqchip code, irqchip code can safely call generic_handle_domain_irq(), and there's no functional reason for it to call handle_domain_irq(). Let's cement this split of responsibility and remove handle_domain_irq() entirely, updating irqchip drivers to call generic_handle_domain_irq(). For consistency, handle_domain_nmi() is similarly removed and replaced with a generic_handle_domain_nmi() function which also does not perform any entry logic. Previously handle_domain_{irq,nmi}() had a WARN_ON() which would fire when they were called in an inappropriate context. So that we can identify similar issues going forward, similar WARN_ON_ONCE() logic is added to the generic_handle_*() functions, and comments are updated for clarity and consistency. irq: openrisc: perform irqentry in entry code
In preparation for removing HANDLE_DOMAIN_IRQ_IRQENTRY, have arch/openrisc perform all the irqentry accounting in its entry code. As arch/openrisc uses GENERIC_IRQ_MULTI_HANDLER, we can use generic_handle_arch_irq() to do so. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. irq: add a (temporary) CONFIG_HANDLE_DOMAIN_IRQ_IRQENTRY
Going forward we want architecture/entry code to perform all the necessary work to enter/exit IRQ context, with irqchip code merely handling the mapping of the interrupt to any handler(s). Among other reasons, this is necessary to consistently fix some longstanding issues with the ordering of lockdep/RCU/tracing instrumentation which many architectures get wrong today in their entry code. Importantly, rcu_irq_{enter,exit}() must be called precisely once per IRQ exception, so that rcu_is_cpu_rrupt_from_idle() can correctly identify when an interrupt was taken from an idle context which must be explicitly preempted. Currently handle_domain_irq() calls rcu_irq_{enter,exit}() via irq_{enter,exit}(), but entry code needs to be able to call rcu_irq_{enter,exit}() earlier for correct ordering across lockdep/RCU/tracing updates for sequences such as: lockdep_hardirqs_off(CALLER_ADDR0); rcu_irq_enter(); trace_hardirqs_off_finish(); To permit each architecture to be converted to the new style in turn, this patch adds a new CONFIG_HANDLE_DOMAIN_IRQ_IRQENTRY selected by all current users of HANDLE_DOMAIN_IRQ, which gates the existing behaviour. When CONFIG_HANDLE_DOMAIN_IRQ_IRQENTRY is not selected, handle_domain_irq() requires entry code to perform the irq_{enter,exit}() work, with an explicit check for this matching the style of handle_domain_nmi(). Subsequent patches will: 1) Add the necessary IRQ entry accounting to each architecture in turn, dropping CONFIG_HANDLE_DOMAIN_IRQ_IRQENTRY from that architecture's Kconfig. 2) Remove CONFIG_HANDLE_DOMAIN_IRQ_IRQENTRY once it is no longer selected. 3) Convert irqchip drivers to consistently use generic_handle_domain_irq() rather than handle_domain_irq(). 4) Remove handle_domain_irq() and CONFIG_HANDLE_DOMAIN_IRQ. ... which should leave us with a clear split of responsiblity across the entry and irqchip code, making it possible to perform additional cleanups and fixes for the aforementioned longstanding issues with entry code. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch.
