Applying the __attribute__((packed)) annotation to members that do not need it impacts performance negatively on architectures that do not support efficient unaligned accesses (e.g. ARMv7). Hence minimize the __attribute__((packed)) annotations. See also CONFIG_HAVE_EFFICIENT_UNALIGNED_ACCESS in the Linux kernel.
